About Spectre Sound Studios:
I'm Glenn Fricker, engineer here at Spectre Sound Studios. I love making records, and after doing it for sixteen years, I want to pass on what I've learned. On my channel you can find tutorials on how to record guitar, bass, real drums and vocals. There's reviews and demos of tube amps, amp sims, drums, mics, preamps, outboard gear, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, and plugin effects.
We've covered Moon on the Water, played Bias FX, given you the absolute best in Stupid Musician Texts, ranted & raved about bass guitar, and this channel is where The Eagle has Landed.
Everything you've wanted to learn about recording Hard Rock & Heavy Metal can be found right here on this channel!
I also respond to your comments & questions: The best make it into the SMG Viewer's Comments series of videos. Loads of fun, lots of laughs.
Thanks for checking out my channel & please subscribe!

    RE: music theory. Even if you don’t know you’re using it, you’re still using it. Kind of like when people (such as myself) use/misuse words they don’t really understand, but it sounds right to them. The book didn’t stop getting written when all the classic composers died, and that seems to be a common misconception. Music theory is not a play by play of how to compose like Beethoven. It’s centuries of experience poured into an ever evolving road map. A road map that includes every alternate route you could possibly imagine.

    I think the Kemper still has it's place. Not neccessarily in a studio, it is VST in a fancy enclosure afterall. But for a guitar player that wants to play live or without the hastle of setting up a computer, it's a cool plug and play situation. While you should not overestimate it, it still has it's place as a tool in certain environments.

  • @saberreiter8569
    @saberreiter85693 жыл бұрын

    Kemper is good. I owned one and was very happy with it. The thing is, the Kemper is a stand alone unit and can be easily used live. VSTs can be used live, too, but you will need at least some kind of laptop/pc. VSTs sound very good nowadays, but it depends on your usecase if you want one or the other.

  • @porcubot

    @porcubot

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yeah. Kempers, AxeFX, the line 6 helix stuff... it all has value outside of the studio. I think Kemper gets shit on like this because it's often marketed as a studio solution, but it doesn't really stand up to VSTs and amp sims cost/value in studio situations anymore. Its true value is in a live situation, where I'd be more comfortable with that kind of closed ecosystem instead of a laptop with ableton and some amp sim VSTs.

  • @Stefan-

    @Stefan-

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@porcubot A lot has happened since the Kemper amp was introduced 9 years ago, while its still good at copying amps at a certain setting other manufacturers has also gotten very close to reproducing the real deal and some have made attempts to add profiling types of function to their units. Today Kemper seems a bit old hardwarewise and many have better user interface.

    Years ago (2005-2010) when I was trying to make it in the local music scene, I came to be aware of the fact that "core" kids were usually cowardly assholes. These were the same kids that would "accidentally" hit you in the face with their "dancing" that they did in the mosh pit and then act confused when you found them in the parking lot and confronted them. There was this one time where a bandmate of mine was playing a show with a side band of his at a place called Faith Family Church. This place was literally a one-room suite in a strip mall where they'd have worship services during the day and scenecore concerts at night. I had posted on MySpace that I looked forward to going to this show to support my bandmate and his band and that I should get myself kicked out afterwards because it would be metal to get thrown out of a church. I was kidding of course, but the local scene kids didn't see it that way. The WAVE UPON WAVE of backlash was immediately overwhelming. I went back and amended that post to insist that I was, in fact, JUST KIDDING, but they didn't care. Apparently, you simply just "don't fuck with FFC!" I received massive amounts of hate messages on MySpace, and on my phone as well as they had somehow gotten my phone number. This went on for well over a month. Funny thing is: none of the males who were harassing me would tell me their names. No one would meet me to fight. These kinds of kids are typically beta-male cowards.

    Here's a story for you Glenn, In my second or third year studying music production at university, another student (a moron) asked me: "So what kind of music do you produce?" I responded honestly and said "I'll try my hand at producing pretty much anything but electronic music made in computers isn't really my thing." The moron then replied with "So you play like guitar/ keys in the studio and get someone else to do your drums and shit"? I said "No, I record the whole band/artist in the studio myself." "Oh so you make your own drum samples in the studio and use them for your track?" "No, I record all the musicians playing in the studio, as live as possible." Then came the moment I knew I was never going to speak to this moron ever again when he responded with: "Nah dude, don't do that you'll get like bleed and phasing, and you'll need to know like basic theory shit to be able to understand the musicians. Just use Logic Pro, some synth presets and a bunch of drum samples."

    The "Audio blur" thing. It isn't the job of the musician to search for recording tutorials or learn audio engineering. Their job is to play their instruments. Your job is to record and engineer. Though, must agree, that "Reverb" is a very commonly used term, even outside of a musical context. As stupid as it is to forget, we've all been there, perhaps it just slipped their mind, so I wouldn't judge...

    My friend's band made their demo at a local studio and the engineer became an impromptu producer, using his experience to help make their songs better. The band paid him extra because they recognized his invaluable input. Have you ever provided your services as producer or do you just stick to engineering/mixing?

    In 1989 I wrote an English paper on heavy metal (because I was 15 and obsessed, obviously) and even then, without help from the internet, I knew what BPM stood for. Also, "audio blur" is a great term if you're reviewing a shoegazer metal record, but leave it for the music critics.

    Watching the stupid musician texts makes me feel better as a musician, and pity the engineers for dealing with this king of behavior.

    On the note of your basic audio tutorials, I genuinely appreciate them. Even though I've been a live player for almost 10 years, and was familiar with the basic ideas/terms, I never felt comfortable or knowledgeable in a recording environment. Now, I've spent a few months with Reaper, and demo'd enough plugins to find the ones I like. Thanks again for making videos on the subjects we're too embarrassed to ask about.
