i’m writing a screenplay about a woman who has to hold a guy hostage while evading the law after accidentally killing a cop in self defense. i really wanted to emphasize that the main character is really traumatized from her incident with the cop, and that she feels that she has no other way of convincing the cops to not instantly kill her. she reflects on how, ironically, she is now the criminal that the cops want to think she is. the initiating event is purely just bad luck

I haven't seem anyone note this: The pistol is an early flintlock. You can point at whoever you want, unless you have actual black powder, a lead ball, and have the knowledge on how to manually load a flintlock, you aren't going to be able to fire that thing. And even if you do, the lack of rifling means you'll have to be EXTREMELY lucky it if hits the intended target, even at fairly close range. Putting aside that this means her boss had all that laying around (flintlocks can't remain loaded for extended periods of time and still fire, so no the gun wasn't just loaded to begin with), you can only fire it once before you need to reload it. Which means as soon as she shot the seat, she was COMPLETELY UNARMED and David could have taken that chance to free himself.

Well actually there are four key components that characterize Stockholm syndrome!: A hostage's development of positive feelings towards the captor. No previous relationship between hostage and captor. A refusal by hostages to cooperate with police and other government authorities. Not just Empathy and it could be them falling in love

After watching this I watched the entire movie, and I'm genuinely shook. It's horrifying that they completely gaslight the audience AND the captive. As a male victim of an abusive female, it's personally particularly frustrating- if a male kidnapped a female in a lifetime movie it would be a REALLY different vibe, and that's infuriating.

@psychicbyinternet That more of a misunderstanding of the movie. Yes she learned to care for him but she also pity him for what happened to him. If she genuinely has Stockholm she would of never asked to leave to see her Father again and he wouldn’t of let her if he truly loved her. The defending him and trying to save his life is because she knows he not actually a bad person nor does he deserve to die. Kidnapping is never okay in a realistic world but when you get magically turned to a literal monster that tramua is a bit understandable

17:48 - I have a bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, and while I am still a novice as the law, something that pisses me off is how in movies cops constantly make up fake laws/threats to get what they want. Unless you physically do something that aids in the kidnapping, you have done nothing wrong. You as an individual are not responsible to stop crimes and you have no obligation to help the police to do their jobs. If any cops threaten you into compliance, I recommend remaining silent and seeking out an attorney. Having an attorney when a cop interrogates you is vital, since the police aren't always interested in seeking your best interest.

The prosecutor can still go forward with the case but it will be a lot harder to win without the victim’s cooperation. However, a prosecutor would likely go forward with a kidnapping case even if the victim doesn’t participate just because the nature of the crime is pretty egregious.

I feel like it would be a good plot for a thriller, where in the first half it is played off as a rom com with a quirky girl. Then you realize that she is a psychopath and it's not cute, he is in actual danger. To use people's preconceived notions about gender and make them realize it is a strange double standard. I guess kind of similar to Gone Girl

You know what would’ve been a better movie? If the man and the woman are both complete strangers taking separate road trips to see their family/job event for Christmas. They meet at this tourist-trap town while taking the night off and go to a magic show hosted by a hotel there where a crappy magician uses these old handcuffs that won’t come off. So in order to get to their respective events on time they take a detour together on the road to find this one locksmith or key in order to get the handcuffs off and they end up bonding and falling in love during the process. Yeah Ik this sounds bad but hey; at least it’s better than one of the main characters kidnapping and holding the other main character (THE LOVE INTEREST NONETHELESS) hostage.

fun fact: some experts say that stockholm syndrome isn’t real and is more of a theory. the origins of stockholm syndrome stem from misogyny where they claimed women in a hostage situation fell in love with their captor because they hated the police officers in charge of getting them to safety. the real reason they hated the cops was because they did an awful job by making the hostage situation last 6 days and even put them in more danger. stockholm syndrome isn’t even a recognized mental illness by the DSM although it is recognized by other organizations as a symptom or condition.

fairly certain stockholm syndrome was named after an incident where terrorists held up a theater and kept hostages. they treated the hostages so well that at the end when they were rescued, those people did not want the government to prosecute the terrorists. also, of course it inst recognised in the DSM because its not an illness, its a manipulation tactic

And they were mad they weren't intimidating me. So they said I was under arrest of obstruction of justice and drug possession. Lmaoooo. I told them I wasn't going anywhere, because they were full of it, I was super hung over (it was Jan 1 in the am), and in pjs. The cop said he'd drag me by the hair and throw me in his cruiser if I didn't get up. I told him to go ahead and drag a 19 year old girl with no criminal record by the hair through the snow. After illegally searching her bag to find crumbs that wouldn't show up on a triple digit scale. In a hotel room under her name, not the guy they were after, and they pushed their way into the room. I would be happy to get him fired and possibly charged with assault. Harassment. Was I arrested? Lmfaoooooo nope! The one told me to sit down and not to move because he had a call and he'd be back. I followed the two of them down the hallway lol. I didn't have to do anything they said. It was just intimidation tactics. So, cops showing up to threaten someone with some bullshit charge to try to make them talk? Daily occurrence lol. That's how they roll. You need to know the law and your rights to protect yourself.

The girlfriend wants the money and power of marrying him. He thinks he has to marry a high society broad because he came from nothing and he thinks that's what he's supposed to want. All of the kids think they have to hide what they want to do so it looks like they are doing what's expected by the parents. Bro, as someone who developed PTSD and actual Stockholm Syndrome from being trapped in an abuse situation, your analysis of this movie is super valid. An abusive person/captor will do Anything to keep you there and you start to realize that the best thing you can do is just try to cooperate so they don't hurt you and keep your head down. Then over time, you really start to sympathize with them and make excuses for them ("they've just been through a lot", "I stress them out", etc). I rebelled as much as I could but eventually, I had to choose between that and surviving. I kind of can't believe this movie was actually made and no one saw a problem with it like,, Wtf 😬

I was in many abusive relationships over the years (thankfully I'm engaged to someone who isn't even a tiny bit abusive), and I second this. It was so hard to unlearn this. I still struggle to feel safe just because I'm waiting for my current partner to snap and be just like them. I'll start apologizing profusely for the tiniest things, I'm expecting him to punish me, and he's never ever let me leave the conversation without helping me know that he won't punish me and that everything's ok. I've been out of those terrible relationships for about 5ish years now, and I still am healing from them. They are so damaging to go through. You feel as though you deserve everything horrible they do to you. You act out, realizing they are abusive eventually, and you still feel stuck. They convince you they are the only person who will ever "love" you.

Im so confused about why he would dump his girlfriend for his kidnapper. Like she's probably capable of other things like murder and has done it before. That would be a terrifying person to be with

Trauma affects people differently. There have been cases where women who were r*ped would go back to their r*pists to be with them. Trauma doesn't always make sense.

@@nomoretwitterhandles yeah definitely this, i can relate to it as well. and while that super plausibly was the character’s ordeal, the writing is just too nondescript and shallow to make a point with it. it’s less like that concept and more like “it’s a funny twisted fairytale ending!” which kinda irritates me bc then for real survivors it makes it seem like we’re just dumb and we willingly walk into danger (ofc sometimes people do but like ykk) oookk i lost my train of thought just wanted to build on your comment bc you made a great point lol

I hate how the writers did this. Also why aren't more people talking about this? His dumped his girlfriend, the one who sent the police looking for him after he was kidnapped for the woman who kidnapped him, because they had a little bonding moment? What?
