Lyrics:
Life is a battlefield
And it’ll drag you right through hell
Bites like a rattlesnake
The kind that you just don’t see on the trail
I miss my father everyday
The kinda pain I pray don’t fade away
And the ones above guide me down the road
Yeah grief is only love that’s got no place to go
From my great grandad in the ground
To all the ghosts in my hometown
Yeah they’re the ones that find me down the road
Yeah grief is only love that’s got no place to go
Grief is only love
The world is a cannonball
You deal with the feelings you can’t hide
God gave us alcohol
When we need to leave ‘em all inside
And I don’t feel like crying
But I just keep crying
For the ones above to guide me down the road
Yeah grief is only love that’s got no place to go
From my great grandad in the ground
To all the ghosts in my hometown
Yeah they’re the ones that find me down the road
Yeah grief is only love that’s got no place to go
Grief is only love
Grief is only love
Grief is only love
I don’t feel like crying
But I just keep crying
For the ones above to guide me down the road
Yeah grief is only love that’s got no place to go
So hang on to the hurtin’
And let it grab ahold and the only thing for certain is it’s out my control
And grief is only love that’s got no place to go
Yeah grief is only love that’s got no place to go
Yeah grief is only love
Grief is only love
Grief is only love
Grief is only love

Well Mr. Johnson, as a kid (I'm 22 in july) I never seen any of the men around me cry. Only the women. And only when an important woman in their life was gone, would I see them cry. I cried... a lot. I'm glad I read this comment from a 64 year old, as a 21 year old listenin to the same damn song. Have a good day sir

The amount of grief we experience is equal only to the love we know. The greater the love the greater the grief. What a privilege it is to know grief. Those who've never known grief have never felt love. I love you all.

Well, that is one more year down. Last night was a lonely one, as many birthday nights have been these past few years. I miss them all. My twin brother, daughter, family and friends, brothers killed in war....and the list seems to go on... Again there was no cake, no candles, no singing, but my birthday wish was the same, no matter how futile. I hope some day....I find out where all the love goes. I wish you all here in the comments...nothing but...peace and progress.

29 years since I lost mine. Still cry. I will forever remember where I was when I first heard this. Was driving... As the song went on I clearly remember saying "Wow" twice.... The first was "I miss my father everyday. The kind of pain I pray don't fade away." The second was " I don't feel like crying, but I still just keep crying." I am still amazed by this song, and the chills still come with it!

But she did it, and we made it. It all ends up good for good peope, and whatever you're going trough right now i just pray wont be strong enough to keep you from seing and enjoying the good parts of life! God bless friend :)

Lost my dad 2017 from a rare virus, lost my mom to cancer at 21. I would did anything to hear these words and song when I was at my darkest hours. This song helps me actually start to grieve. No parents, went thru a divorce and all I really had was me to pull myself off the floor and fight back against my loneliness. This song already brings me so much strength. Hang in there brother and remember your dad truly loves you and is very proud

This song found me at the right time. Losing someone close to you during the holidays isn’t easy. It’s good to remember that the intense grief we feel is the heavy recoil from an intense love we shared. The blessing is the life of love we shared. The real tragedy would have been never having shared that love with them. - Til we meet again.

Beautiful songs don’t just exist bc of what we feel when we first hear them but bc of the beauty that is music in knowing our thoughts and feelings are shared w others. Music has been my outlet and part of my self talk for so long now. This song is such a blessing. Beautiful words and song

This is the best description of “aged” grief I’ve come across. Fresh grief feels much different but that line, “I miss my father everyday, it’s the kind of pain I pray don’t fade away” is right on the money. Grief starts to feel comforting after enough time has passed. Super well written, 100% human song

Once in a generation kinda talent! Excellent story telling, paints the picture extremely well. Perfect harmony and melody.. perfect nostalgic feel. Then the voice and music is phenomenal, not 1 song that I dislike. And his acoustic versions are his best versions.. extremely raw!! Love it.

Great song. It speaks to all of us who have been “ghosted”. When our loved ones move on, either in this life or the next, we’re the ones that become ghosts. My daughter got married about a year and a half ago, and went from being under my wing in my nest for her first 21 years, to just gone. No one ever told me how much this was going to hurt.

Amazing…..This was my first listen of this song and I can truly say that I never wanted it to end. The anxiety of the seconds counting down to the end sucked. This is one of the best songs I’ve ever heard.

I started going to therapy again, and was diagnosed with PTSD from how my dad passed. 13 years ago and I still act like it just happened. I’ve been looking for a song or something to explain to people how this is. My mom too. I may need to get an instrument and sit at out and learn this. This is cathartic.

I randomly bought and acoustic guitar a few months ago, and it bas been truly surprising how strumming chords to a simple song can knock some things loose and let them free. I encourage you to try it ❤
