Lyrics:
He was named by my Grandma
She got it from the Bible
And he passed it on to me like my grandaddy’s rifle
Raised me up like sweet corn
Created a disciple
Yeah I fought it like hell, hell he became a rival
Yeah I tried to be different
Tried to go against the grain
Didn’t make no difference
I just ended up the same
I’ve never known better
‘Cause every bone’s tethered
You wanna change my name
Gotta drain my blood
God damn, I am my father’s søn
Yeah
Yeah I left town just to get out of his shadow
And he’d send me a twenty just to get back on the saddle
I put up a good fight but I didn’t win the battle
I guess the tree don’t grow very far from the apple
I’ve never known better
‘Cause every bone’s tethered
You wanna change my name
Gotta drain my blood
God damn, I am my father’s søn
I am my father’s søn
I wear his blue jean jacket & his name like a badge of honor
I used to hate being called Junior
but I don’t mind any longer
I’ve never known better, yeah
‘Cause every bone’s tethered
You wanna change my name
Gotta drain my blood
Everything I am’s everything he was
God damn, I am my father’s søn
I am my father’s søn
I am my father’s søn

I always admired my old man, he made my life difficult but I now know that he just wanted me to be a better version of himself. He wanted me to have a better life than himself which was made impossible because I only wanted to be just like him. We lost him to cancer at 62 years old, I was barely 30. It's almost been a year, and one hell of a rough one. But goddamn I am my father's son 💜

One of the best albums ive ever heard, and his acoustic versions are as good if not better than the studio versions.

And not only has he written one song to put a tear to my eye but multiple that has me balling my eyes out every time I listen. If you’ve found this guy, then you’ve found a treasure. If he don’t blow up and become famous as hell for his lyrical genius then there’s definitely something wrong with this world. His lyrics destroy any walls I have built to keep me safe from falling apart.

This is one of best songs I’ve heard in a very long time. From any artist in any genre. I’ve been hooked since I saw you in Newport, RI. Killer song which I know has deep meaning for you, but it speaks to so many. Such a great tune!

This song is so special. I feel every bit of the pain you felt & and are feeling as life goes on. As you know I lost my Dad a few years ago as well. A day doesn’t pass by where I don’t think of him and feel his guidance. This is a heartbreaker of a song that I will revisit in my moments of reflection. Thank you SWJR. Loved the end of the video as well. Hang in there ❤ your UK OG
