    As bad as this movie is, I actually found the Sparks stuff intriguing. She has a genuine friendship without sexual or romantic undertones with Shaq, she has her legs crushed but learns that she can still be useful as a person, she manages to get back into her wheelchair all by herself, she is shown to be smart, brave and inventive, Shaq openly admits that he needs her and by the end she becomes a badass in her own right. That's quite something for a female character in a superhero movie back in the day.

    You're very correct - sadly, I have an awful suspicion that the reason they didn't have them hook up is because he's black, she's white. I hope I'm wrong and it was a conscious effort to portray a female/male friendship without a romantic element.

The first 1/4 of this movie actually does get his origin right, though, he invented super-powerful laser guns for the military that then got distributed to random criminals.

    Actually there have been rumors of a reboot of "League" in development. Also, In a 2018 interview, Lea Thompson herself said she was going to pitch Marvel a new Howard the Duck movie, with hopes of directing as well. A full remake as far as I know, and considering the reception people have given for Seth Green's Howard the Duck cameos, I think there's some potential. As for Steel, no plans of yet. I do hope DC gives Steel it's day again. I do really love the comics...

  • @DragonXero
    @DragonXero7 жыл бұрын

    This movie was such a gigantic disappointment. Let's be clear here: It came out in 1997. "Reign of the Supermen" was a story arc that came out in 1993 as the first step to resurrecting the real Superman, while giving multiple misdirections over which one of the new Supermen was the real one. There was a visored Superman, who had most of the same power as the original, barring any vision-related ones due to damaged eyes (or that's how they explained it at first), plus some pretty awesome hand-blasts. He was also a dark vigilante, hardened by his death and resurrection. Next up, we have the cyborg Superman, no relation to the actual character named "Cyborg". This was apparently Superman brought back to life by Kryptonian technology. He had all the same powers as Superman, but also was able to, through his mechanical side, interact with machines and even "grow" devices. Third, we have Superbo- I mean "clone Superman". He hated to be called "Superboy". This character was simply drenched in the '90s, and while he had most of Superman's powers, he was weak to fire, and he had a unique ability called "tactile telekinesis". Basically, he touched machinery and made it shatter, even guns. This character would later go by the Superboy mantle and wear the awesome superhero costume of... a black t-shirt and jeans. The penultimate "Superman" stand-in was the Man of Steel, later shortened to just "Steel". John Henry Irons, like in the movie, was a government scientist creating guns. Unlike the movie, these guns were basically just cannons, without energy blasts. They were still incredibly powerful. He builds the Steel costume in his basement, including, apparently, a metal mask that would kinda move with his expression. It was DC in the '90s, give 'em a break. Anyway, he could fly, had a big red cape, and his hammer was just.. a bigass hammer. Basically, he was Iron Man without the energy blasters. Oh, and being one of the Superman stand-ins, he had a big "S" emblem on his chest to honor the man who once saved his life when he fell off a building that was under construction: Superman. Unlike this movie, he was a brilliant inventor, and nearly sacrificed himself more than once in the comics, even having his suit pretty-much destroyed by an evil alien. There be spoilers ahead, but if you haven't read this series that is over 20 years old, you probably won't now either. You should, but it's hard to find the TPB these days. There was one more Superman that showed up: The real Kal-El. That's right, Superman himself arrives on the scene. Turns out, the visored one is actually another character, a not-exactly evil but still dangerous entity named "Eradicator", who gives his life to save Superman and give him his powers back by.... transforming a blast of Kryptonite into Superman powers... somehow... Again, '90s comics. That nifty Cyborg Superman was actually a consciousness of a really obvious Reed Richards knockoff who had a bone to pick with the real Superman and his home planet of Earth. So he teams up with Mongul and tries to finish off the real Superman, but is defeated. Oh, and Superboy was a clone of Superman with some LEX LUTHOR mixed in. Supposedly, this was Lex Luthor Jr., but in reality, it turned out to be the real Lex, just de-aged somehow or something. It was kinda stupid. Still, it was a fun ride, and even included a temporary "yep, Clark Kent and Superman are totally different people, yo" scene with Supergirl using her powers to look like Clark so he can be rescued by Superman. See, Supergirl was actually an alien who- y'know what, just don't ask. It was kinda stupid. I write all this because the Steel in the comics was actually a really cool character. Among other Supermen, he never claimed to be one. There was talk of him being a "walk in spirit" of the original, but that was dismissed quickly. Still, he was a great hero in his own right. He was a black superhero who didn't need to hold to stereotypes to be accepted. He held his own quite well against actual super-powered beings, including a clone of Superman himself. He looked incredibly cool covered completely in metal with a huge flowing red cape behind him, gripping his massive hammer and staring down bad guys. He was just a regular human, but he was a genius and fought well. Not just against gangsters and someone who stole his tech and sold it to street thugs (yes, the movie got that part pretty right), but also against pretty powerful super beings. I'd really love to see another try at this character, but I'm sure it'll never happen. Even as a quick cameo in a Justice League movie, it'd be nice to see someone like him walking around. Maybe walking up to Superman wanting to shake his hand for being an inspiration, while towering over Kal-El by a good foot, and even making him wince a bit, going "quite a grip you've got there..." "Steel." But this movie? This movie blows.

    Genre-Killer: This film almost single-handedly destroyed the superhero movie genre for years to come (it did still destroy it for DC with help from Batman & Robin, which was a box office success note worldwide that is; domestically, it was the lowest-grossing Batman film and fell short of its budget but was also instant Snark Bait). Shaquille O'Neal dressed in a rubber costume that's supposed to be metal fighting crime out of a junkyard crime lab. 'Nuff said.

    Giovanni Gianluca Reina That's who she was supposed to be but I suppose it was easier to make a new character rather having to work-in Barbara Gordon which would come with a lot of Bat-baggage not to mention the somewhat dark origins of Oracle/Barbara's background. I guess she could have just been "there" with no explanation or back-story at all (it's not like anyone was doing a coherent universe back then among the movies) but there may also have been rights issues between the divisions/producers with control over the Bat-properties and the other DC ones. Anyway, just easier to invent a new character than to deal with Barbara.

    Sparky is what Oracle SHOULD be: a new character that doesn't rely on having the name and backstory of a previously established superhero just for the sake of representation or name value. I'd very much prefer Sparky be the genius in the wheelchair over Barbara Gordon.

    Well, at least we got a much better version of Steel. Superman and Lois now has John Henry Irons! His backstory is that he is from an alternate earth were Superman teamed up with artificial kryptonians and started to destroy the world. Oh and Lois Lane is his wife who got killed by evil Superman. He and his daughter make a version of the steel suit (it doesn't have the S logo or cape but he hates Superman remember) and he plans to kill Superman to save his world. Eventually Crisis on Infinite Earths happened and his world got destroyed and he got stranded on Earth 1. He sees that Superman exists and plans to kill him so that Earth 1 doesn't share the same fate as his Earth.
