    When damning evidence is presented against you in court, standing up and screaming "I've never broken the law, I am the law!" Usually does not sway the judge. Regrettably I know this from experience. Seems traffic court doesn't appreciate references to 90's action schlock as much as I do.

    I've never had the stones to risk my license on something quite that ridiculous, but did once heatedly admonish opposing counsel in open court that what she was asking the judge to do was impossible "because this is Texas, not Mega-City One." Probably not the best way to argue, but I won the motion.

    5:24 you failed to acknowledge one little detail: HE TAKES OFF HIS HELMET!!! In the comic books, Judge Dredd RARELY takes off his helmet, and when he did, it was always censored so you never see his face!! The creator of Judge Dredd said that the reason Dredd never takes off his helmet is because it explores "The facelessness of Justice; Justice has no soul." Have Dredd take off his helmet is like showing the face of Dr. Claw from Inspector Gadget, and we all know how well THAT turned out!! It's a rule you don't break, and they broke it in the first 15 minutes!!!

    This is a concession you have to make for movies. It's hard to cast a good actor and not show their face. You'd have to find someone that is good and doesn't mind not being seen which is extremely difficult to manage. Too much of acting depends on facial expression. It works in comics and cartoons because you're not constrained to real faces, and high concept ideas almost never make money in movies. Unless you don't need to actually make money from the movie, or it's a nostalgia cash in like Dredd 3D appeared to be(whew did those people get catfished,) no studio is going to buy it.

    @@bubba200874426 Karl Urban never took off the Dredd helmet in the movie Dredd released a few years back, he did a pretty decent job of portraying Dredd, definitely not as much shouting as Stallone. The film itself isn't too bad either even if it feels a bit like the screenplay they threw away for the one they decided to use in The Raid movie. In some parts the effects actually resemble the artwork in the old 2000AD/Dredd comics. One last point Karl Urban refused to take the helmet off on the grounds that Dredd never did.

  • @bubba200874426

    @bubba200874426

    @@aokproservice9324 There is far more to making a movie than just writing a screenplay. You have to write a screenplay that would actually get sold. Dredd(2012) doesn't sell in 1995 as a screenplay. Dredd(2012) is a Judge Dredd movie. Judge Dredd(1995) is an action movie set in that universe. The latter is much easier to sell to a production company. Dredd is the least interesting character in that universe, just like Bond is the least interesting character in his universe, so a movie that pointedly avoids humanizing the main character to make them more interesting never had a chance to sell. Especially in 1995 when there isn't a comic book movie boom happening. It's not a good movie or a good adaptation, but I enjoy it, and I recognize that it(and Dredd 2012) doesn't get made if it was a more faithful adaptation.

    Rob Schneider could still work in a way(have him play Max Normal instead). The new Dredd movie's plot is an original story that has barely anything to do with the comics while this movie mainly adapted The Day The Law Died(Dredd framed for a crime he didn't commit, so you can't call that a "generic cop framed for crime cliche")and Return Of Rico(duh)

    The Lawgiver pistol uses DNA recognition to allow only authorised judges to fire it, it also tags all bullets fired with DNA of the judge using it. I'm guessing it would normally be used to check for excessive force to ensure judges are not executing too many perps, such as the 7 Dredd killed at the start to where Fargo questioned if they were avoidable.

    +The Smoking Skull Judge Dredd works best if they use an unknown actor that doesn't mind that his face won't be shown for all or the vast majority of the movie. Stallone was huge by the time this movie was out, no way he would allow his face be covered. Also, the newer Dredd went wise and stuck to a single, self contained story like a comic book.

  • @GriffinPilgrim

    +Greyghostvol1 Well, not so much unknown (guy was in Lord of the Rings), more an actual actor who understands the role and puts that ahead of his ego. Like Hugo Weaving in V for Vendetta; he's hardly small time, Matrix, Transformers, Lord of the Rings again, but he got the role and the mask stayed on. Also big plus in Dredd's favour was that, unlike this film, they didn't try to make it a big earth shattering event but more like a day in the life. Felt more genuine.

    ***** Well I disagree with it. Look, it's very simple : The thing about Joseph Dredd is that he suffers the opposite problem Deadpool does nowadays. People take him waaaaay too seriously, while in fact they are NOT supposed to. The character is satirical first and foremost and the whole helmet always on head is to ridicule Dredd's overzealousness, not because he's a mistifying enigma ! Hell the world he lives in is over-the-top insane like if Mad Max and Wackyland had a deformed baby ! Yes, I agree that Stallone only played the comics character only for the first 15 minutes of the movie (that was spot on !). Yes , he then went on John Spartan with it ...but it was still FUN and it had a story set in Dredd's world as a silver lining (Mean Machine FTW !). Urban by contrast had jack shit to play off of and right after the 20th minute and the first Slomo shot.... I was bored... and I am not hard to satisfy ! Had they gone bonkers and hammy with it, then I would have called it a better movie...but it isn't. Neither as an adaptation nor as a movie.

    As a movie Judge Dredd is actually quite close in tone and humour to the comics. People think of Judge Dredd as this super serious character (which he is) but the comics themselves are anything but. They are like Mad Magazine parodies of sci-fi cop movies. The comics are utterly ridiculous with Dredd playing the straight man for contrast.

  • @Sorrel-Fox

    ClockworkFoxify Dredd gets the titular character right. Carl Urban IS Judge Dredd as far as I'm concerned. Where Judge Dredd got the world, character types and the satire right. • @Maximara

    @Maximara

    In fact, Judge Dredd (1995) takes several ideas/plots straight from the comics. The Angel family's cannibalism comes straight from the comic (1980) as does Mean "Mean Machine" Angel's anger dial. The movie's basic plot is a condensed version of the "Day the Law Died" (1978) where a madman (Cal) becomes Chief Judge and framed Dredd to get him out of the way. Dredd having a clone brother is also from the comics: "The Return of Rico" (1977). The Dredd comics of the 1970's had a _lot_ of camp elements. For example, Chief Judge Cal made a fish Deputy Chief Judge and in his search for the Judge Child Dreed encountered Faro who had recreated ancient Egypt in the Cursed Earth and had slaves mine garbage. ( www.starkafterdarkonline.com/?p=9963 ) While the camp toned down in the main Dredd books in the 1990s, it went to even higher levels in tie-ins like Red Razors. In that book (set 50 years further in the future from the Dredd series) the body of Elvis Presley (who is worshiped as a god) is stolen. Searching for the body is Sov-Block Judge Razors (a mind altered criminal), his talking horse Ed (who is also a Judge), and the Spooky Doo enforcers (who as the name suggests are effectively Scooby Doo and company knock offs...to the point "Mystery Machine" is on the side of their van).

    It's called taking liberties. There were worse liberties taken(the helmet thing, Fergie character travesty, Hershey character travesty, Griffin character travesty). The Long Walk was used here as a manipulation tactic in exchange for lightening Dredd's sentence as opposed to Griffin straight up killing Fargo(i.e Cal killing Goodman in the source material). Now that I think about it, Cal would have been a better corrupt Chief Judge(Justice)villain because ham and Judge Fish lol

    I loved the reboot with Karl Urban. HOWEVER.......it was too restricted. The orginal showed us the wasteland, other Judge units of the precinct, an awesome battlebot and a sad backstory of Dredd.

    Those who have seen Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 will be satisfied for what Stallone's character should have said to the exiled Yandu. Ravangers shouldn't have a code they should have a LAWWWWWW so Stallone can ham it up once again.

    3:56 there’s the usual ammo and semi auto firing, there’s rapid fire, stun, double whammy, hot shot, armor piercing, incendiary, and probably a few more firing capabilities.

    The thing is, it is actually fairly true to the comic in a lot of ways. That is how the uniform looks, the gun has a bunch of settings, and they do go on the long walk.

    Every time you hear a musician brag about Versace, I want you to think of the codpiece Stallone wears in this movie. That was Gianno Versace's idea. You're welcome.

    Ah yes, the good old standard issue armour-piercing, hollow-point, explosive tipped, incendiary, tracer, double-whammy, tax-filing, sandwich-making ammunition. Never leave home without it.

    Fun fact: Stallone’s mother had complications during his birth, causing the obstetricians to use two pairs of forceps. Misuse of these severed a nerve in Stallone’s face, causing paralysis in parts of his face. Despite this Stallone went on to become an almost morbidly successful actor.

    Supposably Stallone wanted this move to Kickstart a series based on the comics. Stallone was apperently a big fan of them and he jumped at the idea to work in them. He got into a huge argument with the producers about dreads face being shown. The producers didn't understand the point in his face never being shown.
