    Ripley making that shot with the basketball without looking wasn't even special effects, she legit made that shot. But from an alien standpoint, heightened spacial awareness would've let her know exactly where that hoop was without looking.

    The infected prisoner was actually my favorite character. He knew he was a goner but kept going anyway. Then, when he knew he was going to die from the chest burst anyway, he used himself as a sacrifice to rush the guy holding them at gun point. I thought that was an awesome and noble way to go out in an Alien movie!

    Exactly! He was a tragic figure, a decent seeming guy that was doomed to die horribly. I don't understand when NC he doesn't connect with people just bc they are obviously not gonna make it. He gave a talk at my university in 2017 about Théâtre de la Cruauté, which is a performance style that prioritises Id over Ego, forcing the actor to reach for primal emotions such as lust, greed or anger and build their character around those instead of higher reasoning. That’s why a lot of his work has a reptilian feel to it - it’s instinctive acting. For what good it does, the Xenomorphs seem to hunt primarily by pheromones. So a synthetic is technically considered just a piece of machinery until it starts attacking. The reason - and this is just theory - that the Queen attacked the Synthetic in Aliens is because she was just SO pissed off he was unlucky enough to be in her way.

  • @josephroszell

    @josephroszell

    8 жыл бұрын

    In some of the comics the aliens actually see your mind so maybe synthetics actually produce brainwave patterns or atleast puts out some kind of detectable energy. But if u go by pheromones bishop probly smells human after spending so much time around people

    +Robin L. Tinderfox General smells are not the same as actual pheromones. Pheromones are used by animals for communication, and while humans are _thought_ to have/use them, it hasn't actually been 100% confirmed yet. We know that certain smells in humans can cause unconscious social behaviors, but it's unknown if this is on the same level as actual pheromonal communication. We do have a lot of body odor, though, so the Xenomorphs probably just smell the sweat and blood.

  • @jessehaynes9489

    @jessehaynes9489

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Robin L. Tinderfox Actually, in the case of the Queen, I'm inclined to think that she attacked Bishop deliberately rather than act out of instinct or plain, animalistic wrath. The Queen is, after all, supposed to be more developed than her spawn, not only in terms physique, but also in terms of intellect and situation awareness. There've been Xenomorphs with sockets in their faces that appear to be for eyeball-like organs; maybe the Queen possesses eyes, and that could be how she saw and almost killed Bishop. Just my hypothesis.

  • @papershadow

    @papershadow

    6 жыл бұрын

    I think the Queen attacked Bishop first since he's a Synthetic, she figures he has different biology than the various humans the Xenos had already murdered/captured, so get him out of the way before he does something. If she can read emotions in some capacity, maybe she knew Bishop would be the one to think of a plan since he's programmed to repress emotions. You can see during the fight with Ripley in the loader that she doesn't just wildly attack, sizing it up a bit, so she seems to be thinking in some capacity rather than just blindly raging.

    4:58 Fun fact about that: it was for real. Weaver pulled that off by sheer coincidence in a single take, and they kept it in the film, and it damn near caused Perlman to break character on-camera. It's canonical that when a facehugger attaches itself to you, it's not an egg it deposits into your body, but rather a sort of mixture of genetic material and enzymes, and that it uses the host's DNA to sort of build its own genetic makeup and grow from there, which is why xenomorphs such as the dog alien and the Predalien retain select characteristics from their hosts. When Ripley was implanted with the Queen, it's likely that their DNA mixed, allowing some residual xenomorph DNA to be salvageable from blood retained from Ripley in Alien 3, thus allowing them to rebuild a Queen. Call it a stretch, but it's not the same thing as a tapeworm

    One thing that lots of people didn't seem to get, was that the gene transfer between Ripley and the aliens was both-sided and made this breed more intelligent than the original ones. That's why this is the first movie in which they communicate with each other, work together in groups and even remember individual humans, like the scientist with the ponytail, and take revenge on them. So the scene at 11:05 is meant to imply that the alien actually knows that it's only safe as long as it's standing in front of the hull.

  • @papershadow

    I don't believe that's how it works. The Facehugger forces some embryonic/fetal form of the chestburster into the subject's body, and then it bursts when fully grown. So the body is just an incubator/food source, but it does not actually create the alien proper.

    fun fact: the director of the film, Jean-Pierre Jeunet, only did this film to finance his most famous work, Amélie. Apparently, universal only asked him for his style and not his scenarios, so not only was the direction he wanted the film to go refused, but all three endings he wanted to make were refused as well. In other word, he might be a great director, but this time, he never even had the chance to prove it to begin with. :/

    why they would even think to bring criminals near their secret station is just astonishing, send a ship out to collect from them, bring it back to the station. or have them deliver it to another station, then transport the pods from there yourselves... 14:20 it kinda makes sense for Ripley - she's partly xenomorph in this movie, she has increased strength speed etc.

    @@Rikard_Nilsson yea..if you want to make the movie super realistic and take out plot advances. Sure. Here's the thing..movie logic plus real logic....it's a secured ship. WE are supposed to assume they have heavy security but maybe the Pirates were very great at manuevering around all of them. Movie logic...the scientists are nerds..in a sense...the sense of the stereotype that lasted until the early 2000s. So, they are smart. Yet socially awkward/inept. They trusted their state of the art security measures to do most of the work. They had little choice on who to choose for the run. What they were doing was very unethical and probably not funded honestly. So even with state of the art security, they were only able to use half that due to the secrecy of their plans. Now..you can take all of that information and do what movie makers assume you will...just accept it as it is. Make up a few points that justifies what happened and move on with the story. As long as it doesn't ruin the movie, it shouldn't be a problem. If the movie made smart decisions at every turn...then the movie wouldn't be made basically. If they had top notch security and therefore nothing broke or was tampered with, then everythting runs smoothly...run credits lol. If they were going through the right protocols and had a form of military there, this would also mean they have military power. And therefore the alien breakout is contained...once again..roll credits.

    5:00 Sigourney Weaver took 10-15 attempts to make that shot and Ron Pearlman actually nearly ruined the shot. Weaver made the shot, the crew start flipping out, and Pearlman grabbed the camera and screamed "HOLY SHIT!". Luckily they managed to get enough footage before that happened.

    Gediman is cheerfully invested because the Newborn is his child. His character’s behavior with the aliens before hinted that they were somehow seducing him and he’s still alive at the Queen’s chamber because she must’ve violated him somehow (like all Xenomorphs do to reproduce) and that resulted in her getting pregnant and ceasing to lay eggs. It’s quite Lovecraftian, Gediman must’ve been driven insane after the Queen raped him.

    A lot of NC's issues with this movie don't seem legitimate to me. Brad Dwarf was supposed to be playing a mad scientist obsessed with the aliens. So yeah, he was crazy. The military ran because they heard all the legends about what the aliens were. The alien's death was supposed to be a bit sad because Ripley is part one of them. The alien, while a brutal aggressive monster, is still a bit of an innocent child. Ripley's weird abilities come from a higher awareness to her surroundings. On top of that, the actress really did make that basketball shot. No special effects there. The reason Winona wasn't attacked by the aliens and why she got "hurt" by the bullet is simple. She was faking. She faked being hurt because she wants to be human and hates being a machine. The aliens left her alone because she was faking being dead and they only take live beings for their nest. Ripley could rip off the face hugger because of her enhanced strength. She also couldn't just pry open the door because shes not that strong. Ripley's attitude is to reflect her more primal traits given over from a race that only replicates and destroys. The military used space pirates so they could keep the facility and kidnappings off their books. The guy cut himself from the small guy's bag because with acid in his face, he was dying, and the alien's grip was stiff already. If he died on the guy's back, he'd slow his friend down, and probably lacked the dexterity at the time to simply unbuckle himself. Missing that giant alien from a few feet away was bullshit though.
