Welcome to the Letterman KZread Channel, home to all your favorite clips from Late Night and Late Show - as well as conversations with the writers, producers and performers who helped make it all happen. These highlights have been artisanly-produced, carefully-curated, and chosen completely at random by an old computer that used to pick numbers for the New York Lotto back in the 90’s.

Please never stop this. There is a late show sized hole in my soul I can’t fill and all these of late have been a warm soothing nostalgia in a cruel cold world. We see you. We appreciate you. Surely there is a documentary worth making here. 100’s of hours. Long live letterman.

A good deal of praise should be thrown to Don Giller (KZread channel of the same name) as some of these clips were most likely pulled from his collection. He has nearly everything David Letterman has ever done in his career on S-VHS tapes, including his early work in Indianapolis. Giller has now become the unofficial (kinda official) archivist of the show as he's now working directly with Letterman's people, which is a cool thing to see.
Paul, you and Dave had the best moms!!!
Man. I totally took this show for granted at the time. I am so grateful for the ability to watch these now. So superior to anything now

Paul is a musical genius and a warm-hearted, funny guy. Thank you, Paul, for being there all those years.
In 1987, Del Shannon came on Late Night and did Runaway backed by Paul and TWMDB. When it came time for the keyboard part, Paul just transformed from goofy band leader to full on rock star and killed that part. He just went off and it opened my eyes. It made such an impression on 11-year-old me and I still think about it today. I just hope Paul knows that there are people out here that see him like that
@andrewminogue334

He was on because Runaway had a resurgence due to being the theme song for Crime Story, a police/ mob drama set in the late fifties/early sixties. It was on NBC.
Paul was the greatest. Incredible music director, sharp comedic timing, and could banter with the best.
In the fall of '95 my wife and I were on our honeymoon in NY. We were only in our early 20's. We stayed at the Best Western, thanks to mom. Waiting for our car in the parking garage my wife started yelling "Paul!, Paul!" like we were old friends. Paul came over and talked to us real nice. Thanks Paul.

Dude. Serious goosebumps when James Brown came out! Ha! And on that note, Dave had the best band in televsion, starting with his NBC years until the last show they did on CBS. Fantastic! I miss Dave's show so much. Such good television through the years, and nothing on television these days comes close.
Chris Elliot as Paul is... the greatest revelation of pure genius the world has ever known.

Anytime things happened outside the studio, you knew it was a good show. I LOVED the "Hello Deli" skits
moments like the call to Paul's mother is why Letterman was and will always be the best
Around Christmas, I still get on here and find a version of Darlene doing her song on the Late Show. Usually watch a few different years. It's a tradition.
got to meet Paul one afternoon as he was walking out of Rupert's Hello Deli and he could not have been nicer and more accommodating. Took the time to take a picture with me while being engaging and hilarious and friendly as a neighbor. Once he left, I said something about how great that was and Rupert said, "he really loves meeting fans." I truly love his work on SNL and Letterman and the Rock n Roll HOF shows.. and I am very grateful that I got that chance to bump into a living legend and have an interaction I'll always remember.

Paul was the right guy at the right time. Late Night/Late Show would not be what they are without him. Musical highlights were too numerous to recall, but Darlene Love was a tradition that I miss every year. Rock on Paul and thank you.
James Brown with the cape... a thrill, as the description says. Can't get better than that. Thank you for sharing these memories.
Aww damn it. I miss The Late Show. Nobody will ever fill the World Wide Pants that Letterman and Paul wore.
Darlene Love singing *_Christmas_* was must see TV for me every year. I still watch YT videos of the performances.
No one has ever matched Dave's spontaneity and pure humor. I still miss him. And I really miss Paul's Friday night cape schtick.
Wow !! Wow ! ! Wow !! the bit with the joke about Paul's Mom and the telephone call was Phenominal ! !

That tradition with Darlene Love is so very special to me and I suppose to Late Show fans as well. Thanks for reflecting on those great musical moments Paul.

Paul was always so funny because he had the image of the ultimate hipster.
@deanronson6331

@Jeff Spicolli He was part of the entertainment industry, working for a prominent comedian. He assumed a persona that the public liked. Part of his schtick was needling Letterman under the guise of agreeing with him. But, just like so many comedians have a persona they drop in other contexts, Schaffer did the same in his serious interviews.

Damn, but do I ever miss Letterman. Staying up late to watch him when he was still on NBC was the reason I failed grade 12 math. Better days and good times, long gone.
Wherever I was then, I would tune in and NOT MISS Darlene on Dave's show. Every year it got more and more special, and the show would always end spectacularly with music and confetti, and I did not want it to end, that's how fantastic it was. I want that last December performance to be put up on KZread this Christmas -- it's a song for everyone
