Welcome to the Letterman KZread Channel, home to all your favorite clips from Late Night and Late Show - as well as conversations with the writers, producers and performers who helped make it all happen. The language may strike you as quaint & flowery, the clothing comically lacey & ornate - but that’s how things were back in this colorful and now bygone era.

Now is the time on the Letterman channel when I tell my Pea Boy story. When I was hired in Jan. 1991 to work in the recorded sound stacks of the Library of Congress, the Lord God King BuFu of Recorded Sound at LC also was a huge Letterman fan. At some point months after the final Pea Boy sketch, well after Marvin Hamlisch had written the Pea Boy song, LC had some sort of Gershwin concert with related event, cocktail party, etc., and my boss approached Hamlisch when he was nearby. He told Marvin he loved his Pea Boy song. Marvin thanked him, then looked wistfully upward into the distance as he recalled his composition and said, “I liked Pea Boy.…”

Fun Fact on the Top Ten Numbers Between Ona and Ten, from September 22, 1989 - Head Writer Steve O’Donnell wrote about this eight years ago: There had just been a crash at JFK. An airplane had, like, jockeyed down the runway and just gone into the bay. It was called Flight 5050. And there were no known fatalities.* But it was a very strange, eccentric airplane crash. So the list we had prepared an hour or so before the show was "Excuses of the Flight 5050 Pilot." *There were, in fact, two fatalities, but this had not been reported at the time of the broadcast. And I'm standing literally backstage. The band is playing. Dave is looking at the blue card and says, "You know, Steven, I don't think we can do this list. I know no one died, but it's still a plane crash! And it seems like a bad idea. Do we have anything else?" And, of course, we didn't really have anything else, but I said, "What if we do 'Top 10 Numbers Between One and Ten?' I'll mix 'em up." He said, "OK." Well, I went to the chyron operator and we kind of wrote it as quickly as we could. It really took us about two minutes. I tried to get an element of surprise in there. For example, there's a tie at number one, and I did that by at number three having a fraction. Two and a half or seven and a half or something.

Don, did you ever post the clip where Paul is eating breakfast, his pancake flips off his plate and then Dave spread eagles his legs on the kitchen counter to avoid getting hit by the pancake. I literally cried tears of laughter at that skit and I cannot find the show it was in. It did make it to a 'best of yearly show' and it was from the mid to later 80's.

It says a lot about Letterman, the show and the general magic of Late Night and The Late Show that so many people continue to contribute long after their time there. If I were asked by former employers to do... well, anything, I'd probably be dismissive at best. So it's appreciated that this channel exists for endless great clips and memories but even better to have these Staff Favorites.

A friend of mine who's 10 years my junior didn't grow up watching Dave, and I had to explain some of the things that made this show, and Letterman, so great...and Donick covered two of those: 1. The Top Ten Numbers Between 1 and 10, and 2. The way certain facts get slightly exaggerated when telling a story (Cary's "I've been doing this for nearly a hundred years now").

I have to say... I watched Letterman since childhood due to WAY too much screen time 😂 and TBH a majority of the satire went way over my head. It is an awesome nostalgic feeling to see segments locked deep in my subconscious... Being reminded of my initial feeling... a sort of old interpretation... Then I grapple with how dumb I was.
