The “I’m a good person” underscore has me shook

I remember reading somewhere that Paula’s outfit in this scene is the same outfit she wears when she firsts meets Rebecca in episode 1. And it’s supposed to parallel to how Rebecca feels like a complete stranger to Paula now and how Paula is questioning who Rebecca is at this point, like when she first met Rebecca in episode 1 and was suspicious about why Rebecca came to work at Darryl’s law firm.

this happens a lot, Audra has the same outfit as Rebecca when we first see them for example (showing that Audra, despite staying in NY, is also unhappy with her lawyer job) and ALSO Rebecca wears something very similar looking when she comes back to work in season 4 and realizes she doesn't want to be a lawyer anymore. I'm sure there are more moments like this, it's just so cool how the show keeps going above and beyond in even small details like that. I only noticed most of them on my most recent rewatch (fifth or sixth) and I'm sure there are more

How we deal with the stuff that happens to us is just as important as what happened itself. Glad Rebecca finally got that.

Watching this now makes me laugh so hard since they're just "two idiots smiling at each other".

The Season Four premiere definitely seemed to be directly addressing fans and critics criticisms of this scene.

Sheni Gateway Car *Tay she's an lawyer herself , if she really cared about what happened she would have easily pulled out this reason from her ass, however, to her, this is just a gateway to finally be able to sort herself out starting by in someway ,admitting to all the things she's done , and paying for what she's done in her own terms , and fully accepting it , doesn't matter if she's culprit or not , in her head, she's already ruined so many things ,believing it was not her , and there was always someone else doing it for her, be it her parents, or her heart ,but she never saw it as herself just doing what she felt was right, and now she does. It's a moment of self growth and maturity ,and cleaning up her own mess for once , even though it wasn't the reason that led to her trial, she's accepting it because Paula believed that she could do it if she put effort in herself ,and that's why she smiled back , Rebecca could have simply fell back on the insanity excuse , but she chose not to , because now she's mature enough to accept that everything she did, she did it own her own terms, and now she's mature to face the consequences that came of it. I think it's one of those moments that really makes her character shine best, because she's not evil , just deeply disturbed ,and that show of action in wanting to improve and become healthier is a huge step into her personal growth as a fully functioning adult that is at peace with herself and she'll finally be able to love herself ,even with all her flaws ,and improve on them as the next season comes. Can't wait for this marvelous show to come back from hiatus!

I think because, in a roundabout way, her actions caused it all. Had she not led Trent on, had she gotten into a relationship with Nathaniel and not had an affair. Trent is also a call back to the actions she did while obsessed with Josh. Her admitting guilt is a symbol for accepting that her past behaviour, all of her past behaviour was immoral, regardless of her underlying issues. She's accepted that she has the issues in this season and then she's admitting that her actions aren't excused by love or by her mental illness. I don't think the conviction will stick, it would be a pretty boring season if she was in jail for the whole of it,especially as its (I believe) the last season. But it certainly serves as a symbol for Rebecca's view of herself.

But she is guilty of a lot of things she never had consequences for. In a way this is her able to have a punishment for everything she had done for years and refused to take credit for. She also felt that if not for her actions, Trent never would have ended up in her life, never would have targeted Nathaniel etc.
