    There's a strip of bones down the centre of the fillets there easy to remove just by cutting either side of it and pulling it out

    Called Pla Saba in Thailand, about twice the size of UK mackerel, very popular here. In 1979 when I was 12 my parents took me to Kinsale in Cork, Ireland. Dad took me mackerel fishing a lot that summer and one day in the harbour there must of been over a million mackerel spawning, apparently the only time it ever happened. In the space of two hours we caught enough fish to fill 5 black rubbish bags up, man were we sick of eating mackerel by the end of that week!

    Trow Rocks. It's nice to see where I grew up. Left Shields 40 years ago. Mackerel though. Yuk. Oily. Feed them to your dog, good for their coat. Used to catch loads from the pier when the boil happened and sell them to the curry houses on Ocean Road. Bin bags full.

    Lovely! I'm from Blyth originally but now live in NZ. I fish in similar situations (off the rocks) and often use a fly rod and berley to bring the fish in close. Great sport with our local varieties of Mackerel. Maybe food for thought if you like fly fishing, too?

  • @fishingintheukgarywood

    @fishingintheukgarywood

    Thanks. I'll have to give that a try. I enjoy a bit of fly fishing. Do you put the berley in a bag and tie it to the rocks or just throw bits in at a time?

    @@fishingintheukgarywood Depends on where we fish, if their is current, a bag (onion sack) or bucket with holes drilled in it tied to a rope and anchored on the rocks gives a good spread. If it's really calm we make a slurry of burly and seawater in an ice cream container and throw it around the place with a spoon. Keep the oil from tins of tuna to add to your burley. Fishy catfood works surprisingly well.. A small, weighted, Klausers Minnow is a good fly to get depth. I don't ever recall standing on Blyth pier in shorts and t-shirt, must be soft. lol.

There has been a couple of decent Ballans caught from shields and roker pier recently and usually this time of year there are a few corkwings caught from just past where the old toilet block was on shields pier. The bay between trow rocks and frenchmans bay sometimes holds a few. I have caught a couple of decent ballans from was just past the werry (to the right of souter lighthouse towards whitburn way) from whitburn ledges.

I remember many many years ago catching mackerel off the Groyne, and I boat fished off Souter Point for haddock. But haven't been after mackerel for many years - I didn't think we had them in this part of the world any more. Hoping to get some off the Mull of Galloway in June ;-) Do you reckon a 1 oz spinner is about the best weight? Thanks again, Peter (Hexham)

    Hand-line off the side of the hire-boat for mackerel, with plain shiny stainless hooks. Fish almost throwing themselves into the boat. Hot pan ready, salt and pepper flour, shallow oil. Grab fish off hook; head, gut, fillet, rinse in the sea, into the flour, into the pan. Absolutely delicious! Forget the spuds and veg, just eat the fish. I Was almost tempted to eat it raw, but didn't.
