Mackerel Love Metals! - Mackerel Fishing
Ойын-сауық
We had a long period of calm weather in Mid-July 2021 that led to ultra-clear blue oceans, water so clear that some Mackerel came in early and dined on very small whitebait fry.
Spoons - search 'spoon fishing' on Aliexpress and it's one of the first results, an excellent and cheap metal but the hooks they give you are trash, I ordered loads of the 65mm 13g and I consider this to be the PERFECT size for medium/large mackerel, and they cast very well too. I found a pack of 100 stick-on holographic 7mm flat eyes on ebay for another £2 to add to the attraction

thought they had to be at least 33cm long?
Funny /there's a frenzy with the mackerel and as soon as they start taking there's anglers in a frenzy all over the place lines going everywhere lol . Good few catches there for you tho .
As a newcomer to bass and mackerel spinning please could you explain the advantages of using a single hook instead of a treble on the spinners/lures.

when you have a huge number of fish using a large single hook really picks out the specimen sizes, thats pretty much the only reason, when pickings are slim a smaller treble is better

@@weaverflytyer Thank you for your helpful reply Sir. I am much obliged!
Fishing from shore in Newfoundland, Canada, I've found the same Atlantic Herring fry (whitebait) in the throats of our Atlantic Mackerel. I do think we get the Macs a bit bigger here though (usually around 35 to 40 cm).
I couldn't fish with that many people it would do my head in.

It's basically the only deep water mark in my area so everyone flocks to it, only other option is to buy a kayak...!
excellent video mate, made that look very easy indeed !!!
Nice setup mate. I go for blue Sand Eel style lures that work a treat

I've never really thought of blue as being a good lure colour, but I'll have to give it another look savage gear do a really nice little 9cm plastic sandeel that I might pick up
Legal keep size varies around the coast. Its 20cm in Pembrokeshire. Some of them did look very small mind.
Have a cold pilsen, mate! Nice session! Hate fishing in close proximity to other fishermen:)
It's amazing to see the mackerel so close to the shore at such shallow water

Yes, it's a shame they're all so small, how big do they get in scandinavia? down here 40cm is a fantastic size

@@weaverflytyer yes, 40 cm is considered as a very good size. 35 cm is common
Excellent. What rod, reel and line are you using please?
Its been a pretty bad makeral season so far here in the N.E uk only had a handful so far and usually by August I've got all I need for the winters bait plus any eating .

Everything has been about a month late NW Scottish highlands this year, but recently I’ve been catching some of the biggest mackerel I’ve ever seen
That is a gorgeous setup! What rod and reel are you using?
Can you give any clue to your location? it looked very South Coast of UK. Dorset maybe!

Mackerel under 30 cm must be returned by law
@weaverflytyer
3 жыл бұрын
There is a pretty interesting problem with returning mackerel, they are extremely fragile and any sort of abrasion on their skin will kill them within 30 hours (this is why they have those strange stripes, so they don't come in contact with each other in a shoal). So if I actually do catch a very small mackerel and want to stay within the law, I'd have to return the poor thing alive back into the ocean and leave it to have a very painful death. The law really needs modernising but luckily so far all of my mackerel have been over the size limit mainly because I am using a fairly large hook.

@@weaverflytyer this has been proven to be false ,most fishermen use it as an excuse, i appreciate your method using metals with a single large hook,on a light lure rod ,that's how it should be done,not like some of your close neighbours they look like they've got beachcasting setups,complete overkill
Mackerel loves feders 😜
Some of those fish are way under legal landing size.
@weaverflytyer

These were all in the legal size, besides Mackerel don't really survive being handled and returned to the sea, so yes I could have returned them but I assure you they would have had a very long and painful death. The best thing you can do is use very large spoons/hooks to pick out the big fish from the shoals which is what this video is about.
Why take such small fish?
sry 30cm long
Typical uk 10 fish in the area fishermen sitting on top of each other-miserable 😢

it's not as crowded as it looks in the video and usually there is more than enough mackerel to go around with most people taking home 10-20 fish... just not on this day it was unusually slim pickings
P.S. Brains is expensive, so don't need expensive gear:))))))))) Cheers!!!
