Soviet DP-5B Geiger Counter
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Soviet DP-5B Geiger Counter, a really nice retro Geiger counter unit, unfortunately it uses an obsolete battery type so you can't run it off of AA batteries etc without modification.

For the batteries there is a simple trick, you take a 4,5v battery pack (the bulky rectangular ones with the two flaps over) If you open them inside you will find 3 batteries connected, once wrapped with some tape for avoid involuntary short and written the polarity you will have a cheap modern substitute, without modify the counter Those batteries have the same characteristics as the original, and probably arriving from the same model
Nice geiger counter man. The batteries that I use are called LR-12 batteries (all you do is extract the 3 cells from the plastic casing). I got some from Lithuania on ebay.

Or just bend the prongs to fit double A
"Used by illiterate peasants without breaking." Lol Gotta love that Soviet ruggedness!

Yeah that's what makes it great
This DP-5B took A336 batties, in the UK you might know them as A10 batteries. Yes, you can use 4,5V langern battery innards but beware, they need to be insulated from each other as they have the positive side on the casing. I have designed an adapter to use AA batteries with the DP-5B without modification to the device to future-proof these them.

Ayo can uou send plans for that adapter to me?
Eu am un AD 111M și se aseamănă foarte mult cu cel din clip. Din păcate nu pot pune o poză. Dacă găsești manual sau dacă găsești acel model ar fi super. Felicitări pentru materiale😊
Just got one of these myself :) on the 200 R/h setting you may notice you do not hear counts. This may be because like the DP-75 the higher ranges only use the higher range tube and are only for gamma detection. I have the DP-75 manual in English and that’s how I learned that characteristic. I managed to max out to top of the beta range and then when going to the next range up (5 R/h) it stopped reading all together. Reading the manual shed light on this as above :) I will look to get an english manual for the DP-5b at some point. Oh and I got myself the 3 cell modern battery and split the cells and insulated their casings and all works very nicely! Keep the vids coming, love watching them. Thanks!

How much was it?
The unit of measurement dial is just like a volt meter of a multimeter.
A free vintage geiger counter? holy shit you lucky ass :D

sorry what is the exact name of the batteries you put in the meter? Thanks
i belive one reason why the polish made thier versions was becasue they didntl iike these dp5s, by the dp66m they had removed almost every aspect that they didnt like (one big one being the change in pitch of the clicks when switching between ranges), i still think its a very nice geiger counter and i almost got one before seeing a good looking dp66m1 (dp66m1 is almost the same as a dp66m, just with a power port in the side so it could be directly plugged into power instead of having that thing in the battery compartment, although there was still one of those shipped in the box)

Cool, the Polish DP-66 and DP-75 units are probably better in terms of functions where as the DP-5 series is better in terms of reliability and is a bit more compact. Overall though I think some of the Warsaw PACT NBC equipment was a lot better than the Western stuff.
Why does my needle rise up on every setting please can some one tell me I've tried pressing the reset button but it still rises
Where do you store radioactive stuff when you aren't using them?
@Weaponsandstuff93

In a metal box, with lead shielding wrapped around the outside.
If the glow in the dark dial uses radium doesn't that make it as radioactive as the DP-63-A?
@Weaponsandstuff93

This is the later stuff that isn't radioactive
When you switch it to x100 x1000 and 200, only the SI-3BG tube is active. The SI-3BG tube is only sensitive to gamma radiation and possibly hard beta radiation. that is why there barely is any clicking. :-)

Interesting thanks.
I have always wanted to know the difference between the three models DP-5A, DP-5B and DP-5V

I've done videos on all three, A and B are very similar, the V has a more modern plastic case, has a more contained probe, regulates voltage without a manual dial etc.
What would be the best course of action if mine came without a battery cover? The counter itself is unused with the vinyl carry case, but thats all. No hard case, manual, or battery covers

In theory you could tape batteries inside

Did you get your DP-5 from ebay? If so can you send me the link to the seller?

I can't speak for him, but I just got one in from the seller any-devices. Good condition, but the shipping is pricey right now.
I just got such delivered, a dp5b with bakelite finish, it even arrived with the radioactive check source.(.the ukrainians dont bother much)..the problem as i see is to source the strange batteries.

You can put Three AA batteries in and bend the prongs inside to fit them

You can take lr12 4.5 volt batteries and crack them open those are the b batteries that the counter takes
Here's a good video that can help you with the batteries: kzread.info/dash/bejne/maSGtLZpc5qfg9o.html
