An interesting note. The Soviet Union actually outspent the US in terms of Civil Defense that it was calculated that in a full scale tactical nuclear war they would be able evacuate the majority of the population, survival calculation of 90% for USSR vs 20-30% US. There was a full study during the Carter era about the threat of the soviets evacuating citizens and using that as a first step to intimidate the US during initial planning for WWIII. This is why they had a much nicer Dosimeter kit vs the US stuck with 1950s tech.

Although what you said about the evacuation plans is absolutely accurate, these dosimeters are basically the same technology as the US versions. However, the piezoelectric charger with the light reflecting mirror is a good idea compared to the US battery operated charger.

Hi, I was trying to zero mine for the first time and what was confusing was as soon as I pushed any of the pens down into the charger the measurement bar vanished completely and I learned that this is working correctly. The easiest way to zero is to pre turn the knob on the charging unit as far as it will go to the right. Then insert the pen and undial to the left. It may require multiple passes before the bar appears on the scale.

Great set of videos (all 3). I wouldn't tear down the actual charger if I were you: little to see and ruined dosimeter. I think that what you have already shared is a wonderful insight on the actual workings of this very interesting piece of equipment. Thank you so very much!

can this measure xray radiation?

They still work and are cost effective when you consider the price of modern equivalents. Well worth having in these troubled times.

Very helpful video, the instructions that came with my set were incomplete and reversed. I was able to set my pens after watching this video. Thanks very much!

If a person can buy a new unopened kit of these, are they considered to be accurate and trustowrthy ?

I wonder if you could take one of these and stick in right up next to your barium source for a while and get a noticable chamge on the meter.

1988 would probably explain why the strap is so cheap...the middle of perestroika...

500R is lethal in 2 weeks

How fast are you turning the knob on the charger to get the needle on the dosimeter to move. I have to spin it like mad and when I get near the 100 mark i run out of room on the knob and have to start over again.??

I got this same kit a few of the meters are going crazy maybe broken or contaminated do you have any that are counting up with no radiation? As if the meter itself is radioactive?

These work by holding a charge which is slowly depleted by radiation. If they are counting up on their own it means they are simply losing their charge due to a fault. Given their age it could be to do with moisture or the capacitor failing inside the pen.

@@DextersTechLab I must have got lucky with my CD dosimeters, most of mine haven't drifted and my CDV-138 training dosimeter is showing accurate background radiation levels for the time exposed. I haven't opened my Soviet ID-1s yet, they're still factory sealed new old stock.
