As an elementary school teacher, if a child says an obscene word. It's better to ignore it than to make a big deal about it. Otherwise they will want to use it more and more often. If ignored and no attention given, they typically stop using it.

i wouldnt know a single thing about the Mormons if it werent for South Park, so i would've just had to stereotypically assume that all Mormons are fucking idiots. But now that i've seen South Park I _know_ that they're all fucking idiots, as well as _why_ they're so stupid, and another little piece of the puzzle that is the world has been filled in.

I watched only the first couple of episodes and then one recent episode, and something surprised me: The censored "Fu********" is way funnier than the uncensored one. Somehow, the BLEEP makes it feel more earned and special than when it's just thrown about like no big deal. One of my favorite scenes is where Kyle gives a heartfelt plea for the aliens to have compassion, and then 2 seconds later goes on an entirely censored tirade of profanity that's mostly a kid yelling at the top of his lungs in between constant bleeping; like Marcellus' briefcase, it left something to your imagination, letting your mind think it was more profane that it actually would have been non-censored.

Samuel Wallace tru dat, kinda feels like them kids just spoutin out words like theyre adults or sumfink... shoudve keep the "fu**" line in the show... the censored "fu**" part already gives us the understanding dat it is curse word (marcellus' briefcase)

  • @samwallaceart288

***** It's like that scene in Wayne's World where he gets really upset and goes on a tirade slinging mean words at his friend but you can't hear any of it because of the plane passing over so all you can hear is the tail end of his statement and the friend's angered reaction; if they just had the scene fully audible it would be boring and depressing but the airplane sound provides comedic ambiguity to what's being said.

Payton Holmes Pulp Fiction; the writer had a the classic MacGuffin of a briefcase that the characters are fighting over; originally, the briefcase was supposed to have diamonds in it, but the director decided it would be more interesting to leave the briefcase's contents ambiguous to lend the briefcase some mystique; and it worked, the ambiguity of the briefcase led to multiple fan theories of the supernatural kind. My point being, sometimes ambiguity is funner than having the answer just handed to you; and sometimes that virtue applies to obscene language as well.

I fondly recall the extensive, mostly bleeped scene from Yu-Gi-Oh Abridged, when Yami realizes that Yugi just set him up on a date. WAY funnier than if the swearing had gotten through. There's a couple things to bear in mind when using swearing: 1. If you're going for strong effect, use *contrast*. A bunch of swearing is not nearly as effective as the occasional, perfectly focused F-Bomb. (This is true for drama as well as comedy.) Sure, as the shit episode shows, you can overuse swearing to great effect, but that's kind of like those paintings where it's a giant canvas of one color: Experimental art, hardly the norm. Look at Molly Weasley in Harry Potter, with her "Not my daughter, you bitch!" That wouldn't have been nearly as arresting a moment if she'd been a sweary character before that point. 2. Related: Subversion is often better than playing it straight. A small child letting out a weapons-grade swear can be shocking or hilarious. A seasoned sniper who avoids swearing can be interesting. You can play around with characters who seem ready to swear but don't, or characters who swearing has an unusual effect on other characters (I've got a character who's trying to outgrow a bad habit, and when he uses a word he's been trying to oust from his vocabulary, his friend looks at him and the guy has to dig a coin out of his pocket and pay his friend... and then he has to replace the word he used with a better choice, restating the sentence in full). 3. Different characters have different diction / registers. The best place I ever saw this in action was in "Gran Torino," where three distinctive groups have three distinctive ways of speaking, including the amount and style of swearing they use. Amateur writers just make everyone swear the same, and that's just bad writing. There are two characters I'm familiar with whose diction gets routinely butchered by bad fanfics: Snape of Harry Potter, and Xellos of Slayers. Neither one of them should be relaxing over a beer and swearing up a storm; it is the first sign that the fanfic is not going to be well written. Snape is tightly controlled (yes, he has temper tantrums, but in general, he doesn't relax -- he has to watch what he says and the image he conveys), while Xellos is polite and cultured. Both can be and frequently are *menacing*, but when you add swearing you are actually *reducing* that quality. If you can't write menacing dialog without swearing -- if you can't write a character being menacing and polite at the same time -- your writing is handicapped. (I recently came across a fanfic that put these words in the mouth of Xellos: "Fucking hell, Zelgadis. You couldn't do a bloody thing about it on your own, even if you tried every spell you knew. Just friggin' relax, and listen to me." The character is not, by any stretch of the imagination, going to swear in British slang.) The basic thing to realize is that swearing is a tool, and you should be using it with an eye to what it can do -- and to any ways in which it is not the best tool to use at the time. Every word should have purpose, and convey what it needs to convey. If a swear word is the best tool for the job, make use of it! But many other tools exist.

Another thing that has driven acceptance of vulgarity in media is the political irrelevance of the religious right. In an ironic twist, the censorious forces today are on the left, but they aren't concerned with censoring traditionally vulgar words. Rather, they are more concerned with censoring the expression of dissenting ideas.

  • @Truegryphon

So.. the "religious right" is only out to censor words instead of ideas? Tell me again their reaction when they see two men kissing on TV. Or heaven forbid if they show a woman getting an abortion. Or that they make a children's movie filled with atheist ideology or sympathizes a different religion (not counting Jewish). The conservatives are decades ahead on this front. Liberals only think they can get a slice of that pie, too. "The people screaming on this side, and the people screaming on that side are the same people", or did you not watch the video?

Not to be a jerk, but you only have a couple hundred subs on every channel you have or support. You have every right to do a video on any topic, as long as you make it your own. But to my point you don't have many followers and not many people would even care if you copy him. Go and make the video, the worst that happen is you lose a couple subs? If you were bigger like Millions of subs I would understand the public out cry, but you have so few this seems more like a promotion of your own channel. Also your videos are simply not as educational or entertaining as Kristian. You seem to have a completely different style so even if you made a video on South Park it wouldn't be seen as a copy cat. Keep up the work and you will find your audience.

I heard that Emperor's New Groove was the first depiction of a pregnant character in a Disney film, and to be honest, no one really cared. Yet at the same time it took until 2000 for this to be a thing in a company that existed since the 1920s.

  • @JohnnyJonathan

    @JohnnyJonathan

To be fair, Disney needs also to have a story to put a pregnant character, can't be there just to make "progress" points. I really don't see how most of their movies it was necessary or something.

I think it is part of human nature to have taboos such as 'swear words'. The fact some words are taboo gives them more potency. And the way that kids have to pretend around adults that they don't know about swear words (and adults pretend they think the children are innocent) is also part of human nature. At times, we need that cognitive dissonance.

Our standards for what's offensive has changed radically. But that is not attributed to South Park, that is our culture and society evolving and understanding what is considered "politically correct". Yes, our society has changed in terms of what words people are allowed to use, and what people consider offensive but that is not due to this show whatsoever.

South Park is a part of out culture, and not an insignificant one to pretty much an entire generation. Comedy that pushes boundaries plays a role in changing attitudes as does entertainment in general. You can't say culture has changed our standards and then say one of the prominent parts of our culture doesn't count towards that. It makes no sense.

Awesome video man, loved it! South Park has truly reached a level that was hard to envision when I was watching it as a kid. The social commentary was there (although I was too young to understand all of it) but really not in the same way. Btw, friendly advice from a mix engineer: you should put a high pass filter up to at least 130 Hz on your voice track, there is a strong resonance in the lows that's pretty tiring for the ears after a couple minutes (at least when listening on proper speakers).

Because religious folks had very stupid ideas about how the world works and historically put up fences everywhere (e.g. Earth-centered solar system, hypodermic needle theory in media, governments based on imaginary and hereditary divine rights of monarchs, etc.) Taboos are a shit basis for determining what's really true. If you want to find out what's really true, it's a prerequisite to actually open the doors to conversation first.
