You know, that last line really made me think. "So, If Fooly Cooly seems to you like an incoherent mess, just remember how you saw the world when you were 12." I've had that exact thought before, and I'm starting to think I also didn't understand this show at all when I was younger. I'll have to re-watch it soon. Great video, keep making them.
I wonder if he's put any thought to making a video for Neon Genesis Evangelion. There is literally a treasure trove of philosophy within that can used for research. Hope he will consider it.

I love this show sooo much, I've only seen it about 5 times. I think the age you watch it is a large part of the experience . Like, I was actually 12 when I first obsessed over it, then I forgot about it for a while and came back to watch it again twice at 15 and I saw it a lot differently. But it was amazing both times, I was just seeing it through two distinct lenses and appreciating messages aimed at people going through those phases, its really cool how the creators were able to do that
Last Dinosaur blending in with your final thoughts at the end almost dragged tears out of my eyes
When it first aired in the US in 2003, I was 14 and just really getting deep into anime. I feel eternally blessed I got to experience this show at the absolute perfect time.

I remember seeing FLCL for the first time on AS when I was like 7 or 8. It was so hypnotic and enthralling that I risked getting in trouble for staying up too late and watching TV just to see it again and again. And now, 15 years later, I can still say its one of the greatest anime I've ever seen. It accomplishes in 6 episodes what other series need hundreds of episodes to do: Its a legend.
didn't know this anime existed, definitely gonna watch it now

Your script was very well written
you even make puberty sound good ...............
you know what's weird about FLCL? i watch it at different points in my life and i always identify most with a different character every time. when i was a kid, i was attached to Canti. then when i was a nilihistic bratty teen, i liked Mamimi best. then college came around, and suddenly i liked Naota. it's like, i see each character and their motivations clearer each time i see it, depending on who I am as a person each time.
Dude this video hits it on the head, this hit me to the core and your absolutely right it's about adulthood and the chaos. When I was a teen this anime was a place of comfort and direction it told me that I'm not the only one going through this chaos called growing up. Thanks for making this video
PLEASE DO MORE VIDEOS. I refer so many people to you're videos because of the beauty and passion in which you speak about these topics.
Great video (as always). One of the things I really liked about the show was it seemed like (though I know it wasn't) that each new playthrough of the show I would notice something new like it was added to the show. I kept feeling like they were changing one little thing and then putting it up on tv. But the show was great, and the songs were pretty good to. I eventually bought them and listened to them in my car quite a bit (until I had listened to them way to much!).
I think that it's insane that every single video you come out with is something that is a huge part of my life (so you'd think that is a short list). Since I feel like we have such similar interests I'd like to request either a visual essay on Avatar: the Last Airbender, Cowboy Bebop, or Samurai Champloo. As always, you're storytelling and editing are amazing. Love, Julie
Absolutely love your videos every time. 100% approval! Favorite content creator. Keep it up, please!
Your content always hits the subject right on the nose and i always learn something new. Keep it up.
I got halfway through this episode, decided the show looked interesting, paused the video, watched the entire show and came back to finish your video. I like your taste. You make insightful, interesting videos, keep it up
I love your content. Really really good. Keep doing it, please.
been liking your content on your channel more and more as i keep watching. loved this.
I've watched every video of yours about three times but I keep coming back and every time I'm even more and more astounded with how you can accurately translate your thoughts and feelings in each essay. I always seem to realize the reason I have an affinity for something once you've explained it for me haha.
Your videos are great!
This video made me so fucking happy, I hold FLCL very dear to my heart. Instant subbed!

People always ask me why FLCL is my favorite anime of all time... This. This is why. It aired at the perfect time for me. In 2003 when Adult Swim aired it, I was 14. The themes of the show resonated with me perfectly.
Good lord how do you keep doing these with such incredible consistency it's amazing how each one has been wonderfully written, edited, produced....EVERYTHING.

In the past ten years, the role of maturity and growing up has changed. Like how Scream 4 was created as a satire for modern horror films, a newer season could touch on society's forced views on maturity and nostalgia. It could be about someone who is older, like 14 or 15, another age where you have to show you need to grow up. Maybe have a girl's side of growing up. I dunno. it just sounds cool

One of the most underrated channels on KZread hands down. He needs to keep doing broad popular topic docs, i.e. Pixar, C&H, Bman, Sman, to increase his sub base. Then once he explodes, which if there is a YT God he will, he can keep these smaller niche docs, i.e. FLCL, Adult Swim, coming. I personally prefer these niche docs, but he has to play the game to get that paper :D

Id certainly say so. Along with paranoia agent this is one of my favorites. Of course these kind of animes are about deeper meaning, and artistic allusions, whereas dbz and pokemon are a lot closer to the surface. Not to mean those are shallow, they are just more about situations, rather than character arcs, and underlying meaning that applys to YOU.

God never stop making these. Even though this one wasn't for me (subject wise) i still love to explore and see new stuff / book / games / comics i didnt knew about. Keep it up!
"I never understood when I was younger, but it was one of the few things that understood me..." If there was one thing that could be said about FLCL, I think it would be this.
Im 35 and misssed the whole "anime boom" of the early 2000's. The few I have tried to watch are just nonsense. They are either screaming or crying at nothing for 80% of the episode. I have seen a few seen a few DbZ episodes that were cool and recently watched the series "Attack on Titan" on adult swim that I enjoyed. Can anyone point me in the direction of good anime to start off with, similar to that?

They don’t make em like this anymore kids , sorry :/
I can't really agree with your observation that Japanese animation is primarily centered around serialization, because the vast majority (probably 97 % if I had to guess) of works don't even get a 2nd season let alone a long running serial.

You give me chills with every video you make! I'm so happy I just stumbled onto your videos by being on Reddit one day.
Really glad you made this one :)
I watched FLCL cuz of how awesome your video essay is and now I rewatched your video essay cuz of how awesome FLCL is!
Holy crap dude this was straight up masterful work here. I'm not kidding when I say this is the most effectively worded; insightful synopsis/analysis/interpretation of FLCL I've ever seen - in print, video, or from real life conversations. I will definitely turn to this whenever I'm trying to convince someone to watch this show!
Great work, as always. Keep it up man!
I gotta give you props for your videos man. Your making my favorite childhood things have waaaaaay deeper meanings. 😲
You make such great and informative content. Thank you.

thank you for doing a video on this :)
it's amazing how you are able to fully grasp the hidden concepts on different kinds of shows and explain them in an interesting and grasping way. I did not know this show before, watched the explanation, went to watch it, saw the explanation again and loved the depth behind the series. I can't wait to see what you will show us next
Great. Now I have to watch FLCL again, for the billionth time. Thanks. Seriously though, this channel is incredible and hope you keep at it for a long time. Your deep dives on a range of subject matter is only paralleled by your undeniable sense of style. Amazing work.
Your videos are satisfying. Thanks man.

I know it's a coincidence but I asked for a fooly cooly episode on the last video and I could not be more ecstatic with this perfect interpretation of one of my favorite anime. I will be sharing this everywhere it's my new favorite video because it's speaks directly to those initial thoughts as I watched this wonderful anime for the first time back when I was right around that age and had me hooked. You are my favorite youtuber now and as soon as I have my bills paid will be part of your patreon
I don't care what else you have in store for your channel but know that I will watch it all. Good job.

Thanks you for this. I saw this when I was 8 (just turned 21) and I lived it then. Didn't quite understand it but watching it now I get why it had such an impact on me. Great video and thanks for alerting ppl who may not have heard of it before.
Dude, another fantastic video expressing my thoughts exactly (though you do it much better). FLCL came to me right when I was 12 too and like you said, I didn't get it but I felt like it got me. Wasn't till a few years later that I re-watched and got a better understanding. Thanks for another great video. Also the soundtrack is mad good
Love your videos. You already did one of my favorite animes and one of my fav comics, now I would love to see one about Earthbound.
should've expected a video on FLCL! as always, you knocked it out of the park.
I love the range of content you cover. That ending guitar riff transition at the end was a nice touch.
I would just like to say, that I absolutely love your content. You go super in depth with everything and give these amazing explanations for everything. I turned notifications on for you because your videos are worth getting notified over. Watching and listening to You analyze and breakdown everything is always a treat. You do great work and I thank you for it
Great video as always!
