    The reason CGI often seems to look worse now is that the animators have no restraint. They don't make things move realistically anymore. Everything is moving 100 miles an hour as if it's weightless and not constrained by the laws of physics. So no matter how real the CGI image itself looks, if the movement is unrealistic it shatters the whole illusion.

    This is how I feel about CGI as well. It is a great tool but the over-reliance of it in many films bogs down the quality of the movie as a whole. It even makes the story less interesting (I find). The other great comparison is the Lord of the Rings Trilogy vs. the Hobbit. To this day I think that the effects of the LOTR films hold up better than the movies that are currently in the Cinemas. That mixture of practical and CGI is flawless IMO. Where in the Hobbit the lack of practical effects makes the movie less dynamic. I believe in ten years time the Hobbit's effects will not hold up as well as the LOTR's will. CGI is great for the impossible effects and that is what it should be used for and the rest should display the craftsmanship of practical effects. You sir are an amazing director/editor. Your videos are so lively and informative. I believe you have struck the perfect balance between informative and entertainment. Where many popular learning channels are extremely off balance. I love too the timing of each joke you insert in there that keeps me alert as I watch your videos. I dunno what your background is but it is clear that you are a professional filmmaker and I appreciate your willingness to put in the work that you do in these videos for my entertainment. You are by far ahead of everyone else who makes the same type of videos. Keep it up!

    I agree man. this is well edited and you and he both make a valid points on what the mark of computer generated innovativeness. Bear with me though, for I get to be ever the pragmatist - what about the future of the technology? In animation it simulates aspects of character facial expression and it's a microphone the actor takes home; I believe I have read. A merger of CGI with CGA has been comprised somewhat in the Batman v. Superman movie, which I thought sucked donkey balls. So, what went wrong? Not lazy enough in post-production? Basically, it would be preparedness, I'm inclined to think. Jurassic Park had that. and when the physical effects fell short they had a plan which backed up the participants. LOTR was innovative in its use of both and that has made it extra fucking awesome and that shit holds up. Star Wars Ep. 1 was crappy and for the same reason will be looked back on as goofy dumbo leapfrog - unless, if the Jar Jar Theory holds to be true and he's really a Jedi master maybe. I don't think it will resolve itself easily either way - but, we can learn from such theoretical providence as the film theory, and people love to have their minds fucked with. So maybe the intricacy and design of a movie is more important to the film maker if she or he wants to make a good product.

    FINALLY SOMEONE GETS IT! For years I've thought the same thing about the cinematography of the Jurassic Movies. I always said that at every possible point the shots need to be done from a human eye level. The only way to make the dinosaurs feel as massive as they actually are is to give us the point of view we could actually relate to. This is even more important when the dinosaurs start to fight amongst themselves. Take the Indominus and Spinosaurus fight scenes from their perspective movies. During the Indominus fight the camera flies around and gets quite a few angles we wouldn't ever get as a person. The battle still feels epic, but it could've done a lot better. While I don't like how short it is or the outcome, the Jurassic Park 3 battle actually does more right than Jurassic World's fight scene. The camera is only not at a human perspective for about 1 shot, the rest of the fight the camera does jump around or get imposible angles. It mostly just rotates to follow the fight as they move across the opening in the jungle. This makes the dinosaurs feel massive, the sense of scale is just right, and it really helps make the fight feel epic even for as short as it was. Not only is keeping a human eye level important, but keeping cuts and jumps around an area is just as important. Keeping us grounded or maybe moving at a speed humans can actually move at does nothing but help these movies. The Indom fight needed to have one grounded shot which the battle could've been viewed from by a person and then made that the main view point from which the battle is scene, moving as little as posible and when it's done only moving at a speed that's reasonable. There is a great amount of care and attention that needs to go to the cinematography in these movies, but I fear we're going to lose that as the films go on. Hopefully that's not true and we can get more animatronic work, a better understanding of how to shoot the scenes, and a better understanding of actual dinosaur biology in future Jurassic Films; I'm just not getting my hopes up.

    Meanwhile Roland Emmerich's 1998 Godzilla, a movie that was trying/wanting to be Jurassic Park, has very dated cgi. While to be fair they had some technical difficulties, that doesn't excuse the lack of a consistent size and the fact that there no sense of realism in the cgi despite it trying to be a "more realistic" godzilla. Jurassic Park's film crew, on the other hand, took more responsibility in making the cgi effects be based on reality as this video explains.

  • @ARGAtheropodfan

    @ARGAtheropodfan

    Brandon Dozier Even technical dificulties don't excuse the lack of realism. Jurassic Park had dificulties too. Like for instance, the T. rex animatronic. Stan Winston didn't knew how it would work under the rain. A creature made out of clay and foam could have trouble dealing with water. And so, the T. rex would start shaking as if it was cold. They had to dry it with towels between shots to make it work properly. And there are other dificulties too that Jurassic Park actually used to it's advantege. When the rex pierces through the roof of the jeep, the screams of the kids are real... the glass wasn't supposed to break. Did Godzilla have moments like that? no, because it was handeled pretty terribly.

    Great video! It seems that Jurassic Park was made in a golden era bridging animatronics and CGI visual effects. Too bad it takes someone with a reputation like JJ Abrams to reinstate that magical combination of effects, the studios seem to hooked on CGI like a drug because they can change their minds mid flow. I liked how you made a point about the scale and verticality of the Dinosaurs, this was not handled as well in parts 3 and 4.

    One thing I can't agree on in this video. The 2005 Peter Jackson's King Kong referance. I think the film has one of the best CGI animations and modelling compared to a lot of films during the past 25 years. As a film it does fall short by a long shot from Jurassic Park, but when it comes to computer work, it didn't win an academy award for nothing... Also, when it comes to accurate dinosaurs, King Kong is not a story where the creatures are depicted in such a way, it is pure fantasy and the animals are completely fictional, for example, the theropods we see in the film are not Tyrannosaurs, they're fictional dinosaurs called Vastatosaurus.Rex. Great video though, well done.

    I want to place my vote firmly in the "I don't want to see scientifically accurate dinosaurs", because they are approximately a billion times lamer than the JP reptile monsters. Frankly, Jurassic World got at least one thing right in that it pointed out how people want to see monsters and not actual animals. The dinosaurs in Jurassic Park are just that; monsters brought to life by mad science, with the occasional friendly/non-threatening one mixed in for the "Wow I want to pet a dinosaur" feeling. Just because they happened to be scientifically accurate at the time doesn't mean that is the reason they worked- they worked because they were giant lizard monsters that roared and ate people, and occasionally let a human touch them/feel them breathing.

    A similar point can be made about movies where actors have to personally interact with imaginary characters not actually on the set with them and the movie that redefined and set the gold standard for this type of film, Who Framed Roger Rabbit. The crew (and cast) put in an insane amount of effect to try and make everything look as believable as possible, and that just doesn't happen anymore.

    Maybe Land of the Lost? There aren't really that many live action dinosaur movies, let alone ones that had the opportunity to update dinosaurs scientifically, so it might be better to drop the criticism altogether.

    I usually never comment on youtube videos, but you are so god damn good at what you do. Every one of your videos is so respectful and passionate towards the content you're celebrating, and although it's so inspiring to see someone who is so obviously passionate about so much good art, its something completely different for you to also have the taste and talent to make truly celebratory tributes to your inspirations. Your channel deserves the success its garnered in a relatively short time, and I couldn't be more happy for you. I'm excited every time I see you have a new video, and they also seem too short for how much I want to watch. Thank you so much for what you do.

    This dude is my hero. Making high production value video essays on subject matter in a way that scales the contemporarily misrepresented sci-fi action genre by its archetypes is something not anyone can do, but kaptainkristian's formula consistently delivers offering not only an interesting and introspective video but an active inquiry into why each of these pillars of the TV and movies industry stand on more than intertextually extorted nostalgia.
