according to all known laws of aviation, theres no way tails should be able to fly. his tails are too small to get his body off the ground. tails, of course, flys anyway, because tails doesnt care what humans think is impossible.

Well, if we just think about the amount of energy Sonic would need (and therefor need to consume) to run at his speed, Tails being able to rotate his Tails to fly is not much more impossible, I guess.

An alternative theory is that Tails twirls his tails around in such a convoluted way that he can achieve flight, much like how bees and hummingbirds subtly adjust the movements of their wings to fly and hover, and this complex motion is simply so quick it appears as if his tails are spinning like propeller blades.

When you remember the guy who did the comic at 3:53 is the same guy who is now doing the animations for Sonic Mania, he's come so far :')

What if his tails basically just swing around fast enough like how Conker does with his bushy tail rather than just spin them around like a propeller blade? Like how you wind up your arm in circles, but then again your arm has a ball joint.

Kitsune have shape-shifting powers. If he only has two tails, his shapeshifting magic must not be that strong yet (kitsune grow more tails as they grow in power, ultimately ending up with nine). So perhaps it's only strong enough to affect his two tails. If the tails don't need a fixed shape, they can rotate, direct air, and become prehensile at will.

+sagely Demonologist "Magic" is the king of all explaining away. (No, we're not throwing religion into this, I don't need to get involved in another one of those arguments.) Which is more fun, a three sentence explanation that only works in game/story logic or one that's worth discussion and examination? To me, at least, learning a little bit of science to try and bring sense to lore that doesn't give any sounds much more fun. It's like coming up with a counter-argument to how ridiculous the lore is in the real world.

I can't find any trace of your crap on there, and that one had LOCKSTON straight up say it was magic, not some nobody in the comment section. But as for my answer, no it's not a dodging answer, and if you'll hear me out I'll explain. Magic objectively exists within the Sonic games, and has been shown being used for nearly every conceivable purpose, including flight on many occasions. The difference it makes for worlds that have magic of such variety and prevalence compared to worlds without magic or with very specific or rare magic, is that the commonality and variety make this not only possible but probable. If you came to me with a similar question about Harry Potter, and I answered "magic", you'd have NO room to bitch because magic is a major element of that series. So why the bitching here, even when all the same criteria line up?

he just optimizes the spin and dominates control over the entire tail, so tails can kinda sharpen the ends aerodynamically which also explains how they can use their tails as a sharp weapon.

I like the idea of Tails being a cyborg, it's even cannon in that one game with the 'Lost Hex.' But given that the Sonic universe takes place literally millions of years into the future, or however long tectonic shift takes, so I always just assumed that Tails' species just evolved to having a skeletal rotor at the base of the spine. If Tails was bullied for it, he might be the first of his kind by way of evolution.

I just figured that his two tails were connected to a ball and socket joint in similar design of a ball bearing or maybe a undeveloped ball and socket with the ball joint being dislocated at will. Due to his tails being a mutation the socket they are attached to must have been mutated as well to accommodate them.

Tails Could be twisting his tails clockwise until completely wound, then twist counter-clockwise, also if there are muscles in his tails(as suggested by his dexterity with tails(this could be caused by his genetic mutation)) he could shape the tails into aerodynamic shapes, like helicopter blades. This being said, i love the robo-tails theory, and good job on the research I am not trying to belittle your theory, just bringing up another.

That's exactly what I believe but too add on to it just like how when Sonic runs his feet look like a spinning blur the same thing is true for Miles' tails so it looks like their spinning in one full cycle as for his two "fluff flyers" staying in place when he does a spin attack or spindash...um...ya got me there...

Tails can fly in sonic 2 in mobile by rapidly pressing jump button as sonic and tails look up and rapidly press the jump button while still looking up and he flys and plus he can carry sonic (im cameron hayes)

Another example is ATPase, an enzyme termed the smallest rotary mechanism in the natural world which sits in the inner membranes of mitochondria...but that's tinier than even the bacterial example lol. In any case, even considering other biological examples, none of them are helpful unless they're dealing with veterbrates, the anatomy of a flea, a bacterium or an enzyme are not applicable to Tails anyway.

I don't think so

I've always figured that he was just like an amoeba - his tails aren't actually spinning at all, they're morphing and expanding and contracting in such a way as to resemble spinning. Kitsune are shape-shifters, after all.

Alternative explanation: Tails wasn't born with two tails after all. One of the tails is actually a parasite which Tails has (since he grew up with it from childhood) learned to control. Since it would then be a separate organism, it doesn't need to be hooked up to Tails' blood vessels constantly. Knowing Tails, cyborg is more likely though, especially since it also explains the speed of rotation.

In a world with floating platforms, I always just assumed his tails had some sort of weird anti-gravity powers. We see the Chaos Emeralds levitating especially and causing other things to levitate. It is also possible that he's swinging them over and back to give the illusion of a helicopter. They're pretty obvious like, magic tails though and even if Kitsune never flew in myth it's still an allusion to that side of things.

Watching this just made me realize and question. If tails can't scientifically/naturally propel and use his tails to gain altitude. Then can you please explain or give us a explanation on how Buizel or Floatzel can propel their tails and use them to travel underwater?

almost all games are in a way shape or form are 'realistic ', they almost all have gravity, they almost all the lifeforms have bones and muscle that moves their limbs, they almost all use their voice to communicate instead of something like a hive mind or many other ways.

2:06 I think I know what Alolan Ninetales is now definitely based on, even though I already knew what Ninetales was already based on. This one kitsune looks a whole lot like Alolan Ninetales to just be a coincidence. 🙂

one clip in your video entirely disproves this theory. Tails actually quickly twists his tails back and forth quick enough to per say, hover, and move quickly.

About Squirrel Ray, could've been made into a flying squrriel, wingsuit squirrels from real life. Could have made special levels with giant machines that work like leaf blowers making him fly higher and higher. Maybe have spikes to then do trick like jump throught the space between two spaces or something that does that. I don't know.

Alright then, how does super sonic fly? How the chaos emeral work?

My theory is that at the base of Tails' spine is some sort of small yet stable dimensional rift which allows a tail from a parallel dimension to exist along with Tails own tail. Which tail is his and which is the parallel one doesn't matter because Tails biologically feels both tails are physical to him than one or the other. The dimensional rift works like a rotor as well as excuse him to most rules of physics during the motion of his tails to conveniantly give him all the conditions needed for limited flight. While humans and animals can be born with biological defects, being born with a dimensional defects is a stretch but we don't know if most of the characters in the games were born with their impossible powers or not in a woirld of hyper energy organisms, books to magical pocket universes and so on. I believe it could also be possible that Tails doesn't know he is a genuine kitsune and that this dimensional rift is a natural occurance for his kind. (Though given kitsunes gain a new tail every 100 years how Tails forgets hundred years of his life is unexplained.)

Goku doesn't have to deal with the whole rotor thing, so he doesn't need a prosthetic. He just needs to spin his tail twice as fast. Also, artificial limbs can be given sensors to simulate pain or pressure. I just answered that.

What he's saying is that Tails is a genius by nature, and *robotized **_himself_* using said intellect. It's not because he's a robot, or that cybernetic augmentation makes him a genius, in fact, it's the other way around.
