Those videos are quick and short, so it seems like you’re watching a tiny bits; when in reality, you spend hours scrolling through the videos with little-to-no quality or meaning. I'm 19 and I don't really use social media. Last year I almost failed a course in uni, so I decided to uninstall Twitter and Instagram. It really helped me and now I only use IG on my tablet, but only to follow my kpop idols. Now I just listen to podcasts and watch commentary videos. I prefer investing my time watching chinese dramas or studying.

I am SO happy I was born in 1990 and came in contact with social media when I was already 19. I remember back then Facebook was really a network to stay in contact with others, Instagram was really there to share snapshots. Social media has become so unbearably over-professional, monetized and overall extremely fake, destructive and toxic. I, as well, would definitely have become as addicted as teens are nowadays, because kids and teens can’t tell the difference between reality and fiction, let alone realize what are fake news and heavily photoshopped pictures.

Narcissist gatekeeping and gaslighting everywhere. People going back and fourth fighting over which hunk of overpriced wires and bolts works better. It's entertaining yet, sad to watch once you realize that people actually waste their time and energy on toxicity and negativity. You wake up feeling all happy and good about yourself then, you logon and it all goes downhill. Next thing you'll know, you're anxious, depressed, sensitive, and angry. Half the time i don't even want to interact with the communities on these platforms due to how egotistical and sensitive people have become.

I've heard of new potential bosses or landlords checking out people's profiles, exes, admirer's, lovers, haters ..... I think most of us just crave society's acceptation. We all like that feeling of "belonging" and "acceptance", no matter if it's fashion, appearance, sexuality, religion. It's just an instinct probably, and it's everywhere if you think about it. Social media sometimes makes it seem as if it can help your self-esteem, but it doesn't always. At least from my point of view, we have to find that self-security outside of the internet (sure, internet communities might help if we live in a harsh environment, but it's hard to determine the difference). I sound really pessimistic, but the whole system is wrong, so this kind of videos and the "bright side" of social media helps a lot, maybe the best we can do right now is to try to bring people to this good things and avoid the toxic side the internet brings along. Lmao, I feel like writing this is a total cliché yet necessary.

It honestly has its pros and cons. The cons are more detrimental however, social media is the main cause in the rise of suicide apart from toxic beauty standards. Mental health awareness was started due to this. Social media can be a drive to motivate yourself to do things and actually push yourself, BUT the downside of that drive is that it may cause depression. Its a rock and a hard place, because if you don't know how to post without comparing and just being happy. You end up miserable.

I remember last year, I watched a video from CBC News called "How social media affects teens". Apparently, according to a neuroscientist from the video, the part of your brain that deals with empathy and reflecting on feelings is inactive when you are engaged in social media. For a while, I have wondered why some people in my generation may not seem caring, and it looks like this is the reason why; I am a Gen Z-er. As for me, I only use social media to look back on family memories (Facebook) or talk to my friend from back in Wisconsin (Snapchat).

I always compare my life to others right like seeing all of my friends and other kids from my school all posing a selfie with goofy faces.... And meanwhile I look at myself and feel bad I am not with them. But I love social media to get my news about what's happening around the world and see people being creative. I always feel alone with no one to connect to I useally go check up on stories of my former classmates on "oh look what I ate and look who I am hanging out with yeah" and that's why I barely get notifications from my social media unless it's like from KZread

I'm 13, and social media has ruined my life, I use it every day. I have developed eating disorders to the extreme that it was my only personality trait along with being depressed. and now that I have a healthier relationship with my body and I don't feel too depressed anymore I found that I've taken the time I was supposed to take on developing my personality in my eating disorder. It is insane that I could develop an eating disorder at the age of 10, social media speeds up and increases self-hatred and mental disorders. I am expecting that by the time I have kids that the world will be 100x worse than it is today I want my children to stay away from social media for as long as possible. I hate social media. I hate that I'm addicted.

The moment I stopped caring about social media my life drastically improved. The moment I was honest with myself: why do I post stories? To show off, to appear more popular. Why do I follow this person, is it because I know them or is it because they're pretty? You will always find someone better or more popular or pretty than you there and it's so easy to compare. Once I stopped using, I never feel that way. Fear of missing out, I was afraid of it too. Then I uninstalled Instagram for a week, didn't miss anything important. I don't really care about what stories people put anyway when I'm too busy working in my own life. Social media is a good way to preserve memories but now it's become so toxic and dangerous.
