I am so happy my Black Caribbean family never practiced colorism while I was growing up. Dark skin has so many benefits, including optimal protection from the sun. I can't understand why it is so deamonized when it is literally the best tone you can have for survival on Earth.

Yes! I’m “very white” and sometimes I look sick or tired just because of the skin. When I go out while it’s sunny, I’ll immidiately get burned looking like a tomato instead of catching a pretty bronze. Ironically to all the colorism, I always wanted to be darker and not having to deal with such a sensitive skin (for the sun). Also all of my girlfriends are getting tanned like crazy because darker skin just looks healthier for some reason. The only negative that I see in my country with darker skin is that they don’t provided much makeup for it… my hobby is photomodeling and I know few black girls from the brange here. They have a big trouble finding makeup and usually end up with mixing other products like eyeshadows to light makeup to create their shade. I don’t know if that problem is just here because we have mostly white (or light skinned asian) people in our country or if that’s a issue everywhere.

It really depends on where you are. If you live far north, like in Sweden or somewhere, it is an advantage to be able to have light skin and soak up the sun. A disadvantage to having dark skin in more northern climates is a vitamin D deficiency. 76% of Black Americans have a deficiency, which leads to more fragile bones and fatigue. I'm not trying to argue with you, but I'm simply pointing out that it is not "the best tone you can have"

  • @cookie22100

    @cookie22100

@@kat3ph0bic61 it is the best skin tone you can have because with dark skin I can survive in the cold without much of an issue. Increasing the intake of vitimin D rich foods could easily improve that. While vitamin d deficiency exists, it still beats being literally burnt to a crisp in the simplest of sunlight. Skin cancer is way more of a frequent health issue than brittle bones due to vitamin d deficiency. Not to mention, but most Americans in general have terrible diets, probably not the best group to use as proof for your argument. But "I'm not trying to argue with you."

@@cookie22100 Everything you said was a truth except for "I can survive in the cold without much of an issue" Why would skin get lighter as the Earth gets colder for any other reason except being able to soak up the sun more? (By this I mean in northern climates, skin evolved to be lighter) I also used America as an example because you said "here in the United States", implying you live in America. Again I'm not disagreeing with you. Black skin is beautiful. Just saying that it depends on where you are. If dark skin was the best skin color for every climate, why does it not dominate everywhere on Earth?

Lord Jesus Christ is coming back everyone, please don’t worship celebrities and entertainment, focus on Him alone. I promise there’s more to life than money, partying, homosexuality and music. Hell is real, repent from sinning confess your sins and ask God to forgive you, I know He will if you’re sincere. Anyone who thinks the Name of Lord Jesus Christ is a joke, boldly mocks and scorns Him or takes pleasure in people who do is in for a big unpleasant surprise on judgement day IF they don’t repent and follow Lord Jesus Christ. Hell is very hot, people please repent! In the mighty name of Lord Jesus Christ, Amen 🙏💪✝️💜❤️✝️! Idolatry such as, Islam, Catholicism, Sangomaism, Buddhism, Hinduism, Santa Clausism, Confucianism, New Age, Science, Evolution, halloweenism, Harry Potterism, Politics, Donald Trumpism, Easter Bunnyism and other religions/faiths that are outside Biblical Christianity lead to hell! Don’t believe them, believe the Almighty God the Father of Lord Jesus Christ, who begot Him. Our Creator, The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob is mighty, He doesn’t need a woman to beget a son, He is God. I choose to put my faith in a God who can do anything and everything, a God who has unlimited and infinite power to beget! So, it’s time to confess that Lord Jesus Christ is the Lord and to believe that He died and rose from the grave after three days and you shall be saved if you only obey Him by praying, worshipping, praising, reading the Bible and living holy and righteously according to the Bible. You have to endure until the end, carry your cross daily and build your relationship with God by following Lord Jesus daily until the end. You must never renounce your faith in The Lord Jesus Christ, there’s hell awaiting those who reject/deny Lord Jesus Christ and those who continue living sinfully, even the Christians who don’t want to repent will face the same fate, so please repent beloved people, in Lord Jesus Christ’s mighty and precious Name, Amen.

Following that whenever they talk about other races they'll jokingly insert in comments like 'im not being racist' or they'll look at me to see if I'll get upset for what they say - and one of them will even purposely make more racist comments just to irritate me. I don't think I can ever change their minds, unless they really talk to someone so hurt by discrimination and racism and somehow have some empathy for them.

I’m not Mexican (I’m Canadian) but I noticed this trend when I was watching Mexican TV and shows. Light skin (mostly on the “white” side of the spectrum) actors with European features are casted in leading roles while darker skin actors with more indigenous features are casted as side characters, the maids, the drug dealers, the bad guys, etc. Why?? Mexico is a diverse country. A darker skin actor can’t be casted to play a young educated professional ? Because they do exist for sure. Sorry for my rant. As a foreigner, I can see the difference between the presentation of the different skin tones in the latino community. In Asia, Latin America and countries with native brown people darker skin tone is seen as inferior not just aesthetically but as a human as well, you must be fair to be happy and successful since they don't have those privileges Not to mention that most of the pale/tan problems occur in high school and once adults you kinda get over it, but the brown/fair skin problem is for life sadly (literally parents don't let their osns and daughters get marry with someone just because of their darker skin) It's not for invalidate pale's people problems, but the problem is far deeper in the rest of the world you have no idea how fucked up it is

I learned later why she reacted the way she did, and why she would scold me for staying in the sun too long, why my Tita’s and Tito’s retouched their photos to appear lighter, etc. She’s gotten much better since then in recognizing there’s nothing ugly about darker skin tones, but it really scares me whenever I go to the local Filipino market and I still see an array of whitening products.

Bruh do not do that to yourself. Your skin is needed to be darker because of the harsher sun you got in tropical countries, the uv light will damage your skin more if your skin is lighter. Which means if you are of light skin, you need to use sun cream to prevent the skin cancer, which I hope you would not want to have. Think of it this way, if lighter skin people need spf sun cream to protect themselves from the sun because of the skin cancer, why do the industry pushing the idea of lighter skin beauty to a tropical country which inadvertently to protect their skin, the skin become dark skin? The short answer is money.

I was told I wasn't black enough and the other girls would make reference to my complexion assuming I thought I was better than them, so they bullied me before they thought I would "bully" them. Made my life hell in school. It honestly can get all of us.

This is more of racism but one time my best friend asked me to go get her water after we had just finished a laughing fit and then she said “go pick me cotton” to be funny and I laughed with her, but I felt rlly hurt and uneasy. It’s so sad because she’s not a racist person. She just doesn’t understand how saying those kinds of things hurts others who aren’t white. And same for others. This guy in my class asked if my hair was real in front of the entire class even tho it clearly was. Another time, this guy said he thought I was rlly sun tanned/burnt and not black.

I get pretty dark skinned during summer but I still don't consider myself darker skin toned, my home country is pretty colorist but the worst I ever felt about my skin tone was when I moved to America to a mainly white town and I HATED how I look I mean I would listen to subliminals to make me "white", put honey in my eyes to make them lighter(it literally felt like needles), put lemon juice on my face to like bleach it naturally?? lol I clearly has issues. But I think it was becauase I wanted to look less Indian and pass as white becauase there's so many racial steriotypes of us in the media my lord even now people blatantly say racist shit on tiktok and make whole trends bashing Indians yet no one bats an eye wether its making fun of our accents, "to take away Indias wifi", to "creepy INDIAN man in my dms" ahhhh wish people had enough braincells about how reinforcing racial steriotypes is not okay. Internalized colorism is soooo hard to get rid of I still struggle with it even today but im glad we are having convos over it but we still got a long way to go

Until she said it, I never thought that someone would see their own skin as something other than their skin. Her dad (when he was a kid) was the only black person in the town. He was adopted into the family, just like my mom was. He got the full racist treatment, even to the point where cops were on his ass regularly. Though he did get himself into legitimate trouble several times. If it weren't for my grandparents putting their foot down when people started their shit, there's a chance that my uncle would have grown up hating himself because of other people's racism.

I honestly feel that every skin tone has a unique beauty of it’s own. We need more representation and we need to embrace each other’s beauty as individuals. @@dionysus8967 in a lot of hot countries, paleness is seen as a sign of wealth: rich people stayed inside, while poor folk worked outside in the hot sun all day and got tan. but these ideas were hella magnified by european colonialism. the roots are in their cultures, but colourism continues to be prevalent because of white racism. (and don't forget my bois mongolia and taiwan LMAO, east asia isn't just the big three 😭)

As a white woman, I really appreciate this video. I was unaware of the extent to which this affected people of color. When I watched it, I was holding my hand up against my mouth like "oh my gooodddd". I would never, ever, ever, EVER, want my child, my friend, or anyone to experience feeling that inferior. I have a lot of facial hair, and am very hairy all over, but at least I can shave it off. POC can't just change the color of your skin.

Its so funny to me. I am European and very white. I know that I would never face any problems like Racism and all that. But what often would happen to me growing up is that I would get maken fun of bcs of my light skin. I am very white. If I tan I will instantly burn my skin. People (also my family members) would tell me that I looked sick. Almost every time when I didn’t wear any makeup that would make my look slightly darker. I bought fake tan, didn’t work, I tried normal tanning, didn’t work. So i just think that no matter what your Skin colour is, there will be People hating on it. Stay beautiful kings and queens 💕

As a Filipino with fair skin, with the majority of people being brown, I also suffered from this. My family would say I looked sickly. Not to mention being the subject of nasty comments from people who over sexualize fair skin folks.

I think it's important to note that in most cases, a white person with a tan is seen as that: a white person with a tan. There might be some connotations to wealth and/or health (e.g. being able to afford to travel to warmer places or doing activities outside in the sun), but it's often not as severe when compared to the biases subjected against darker skinned non-white people (e.g. assuming them to be poor, crass, untrustworthy, or downright dirty). So while the act of tanning might seem like a "paradox" when talking about skin lightening amongst non-white communities, I personally don't think we can outright compare those two because they often don't carry the same weight. Funnily enough, while skin lightening is seemingly encouraged and sometimes even pressured upon darker skinned people, it could also carry its own shame (e.g. people who bleach might be accused of hating themselves, their ethnicity). Basically, colorism is just a whole mess in itself. Now, I'm not diminishing other people's experience of getting made fun of for their skin tone. Being made fun of for something that you were just born with hurts either way. But I'm just saying that tanning and skin lightening are just...different. They might overlap in some aspects (usually when talking about beauty), but there's just a whole lot of other stuff too. I don't see it as just "white people want to tan, but tanned people want to be fair".

growing up filipino, i thought that this was normal, normal for me, a usually dark-tanned guy, to strive to have lighter skin since without it i’m “unattractive”. looking back now, media, especially filipino, have contributed to that mindset of mine so much. :(

As a pakistani TANNED middle schooler, I've always hated my body, eye color, and skin. I remember crying that I'm so dark and dirty and that I wished I was a white blonde with blue eyes and that my thighs are ugly (still do tho) . Thank you so much for covering these topics, Ibrahim. Much love and respect

I believe I can relate to this video, as a Western-born Pakistani, I was subjected to discrimination and racism during my school times, what's even worse was the people who were the same race as you can be just as worse, if not more worse than the racist children from school. An example is when I and my brother were attending our maternal cousin's wedding back in 2008 in Pakistan (at the time we use to go out in the sun a lot), my oldest cousin (who had daughters around our age), came up to my mother after the wedding and said "your son's should drink lemonade, it'll lighten their skins up", this comment show's how ignorant my cousin is along with many aunties from Pakistan, Pakistan is so ethnically diverse that one should never compare each other because it's Islam that brought unity between the Muslims together regardless of caste, race, and culture. I'm neither dark nor light, somewhere in between and I'd rather stay that way than to impress society, we were sent to this world to serve Allah SWT and this is summed up from this hadith from Muhammad PBUH "There is no superiority of an Arab over a non-Arab, or of a non-Arab over an Arab, and no superiority of a white person over a black person or of a black person over a white person, except on the basis of personal piety and righteousness.”

I remember in middle school, there was a kid who had very very dark skin. The other kids in my class would poke fun at him for it, and he would 'laugh' it off. I felt bad for him. I wonder how he's doing now. But people need to stop looking at people and only seeing their skin tone, and actually see them for who they are personality wise.

in my country(Russia), it is opposite, if you are pale you are unhealthy(people can say you look like corpse etc) and a lot of people get tanned till sunburns which is super dangerous for skin and cancer.
