I’ve had the same realisation when I was in Italy with my boyfriend and spent so much of my time and energy trying to “look pretty for Instagram” and trying to get nice photos. My feet were in blisters because I had to wear a nice shoe that would go with the dresses I was wearing rather than wearing a practical, comfortable shoe. After the holiday I just asked myself why the fuck I was doing that and I turned off my Instagram notifications and barely go on it anymore and use my phone much less

Weirdly enough when I was travelling back to Italy in September 2021 from Edi, Scotland, I just asked an info to a girl at the airport, and then I kept conversing asking if she liked EDI, she then said no, that it was horrible. Long story short, I bumped into her again while queueing to take the second flight (on the same day) and she was posting and flexing her trip to Edi on IG... I'm personally not any socials apart from FB BCS I have amassed a bit of networking there, but I'm not checking in since a while now. I enjoy YT, I love the long-format and spotting trends from here.

This is why I left FB ages ago when it was at it's height of popularity, it was all an act. I've been so much happier without it in my life but now I feel strange because I'm like an outsider looking in and basically watching people performing as themselves online except they're literally and figuratively cropping out the stuff that actually makes us human, it's like people are trying to live like idealised versions of themselves (that don't actually exist) but are forgetting their own humanity. It's turned into some bizarro world where people are lost in their own manufactured reflections.

I did the same around 2015 (it was a process, honestly, to quit facebook) when I realized that people only looked at what I was doing in life as entertainment, and when I posted about things other than art or modeling, like opening up about mental health struggles, I was ghosted by everyone - including the people who “cared” about me. It was like they didn’t want to get infected with my issues, and would run away until I posted something pretty again. It always crumbles.

After watching a 2021 show called Fake Famous, I honestly have no words with what I've learned and the lengths some go to produce this fake life for social media. It felt like a fog was lifted, now I question who's actually living the life they share on social media and who isn't because it's that easy to show your audience one angle yet they don't see other angles. Or at least some people on social media don't show, or want to show other angles because of perfection or chasing a life they can't financially achieve or a host of other reasons.

Last year my screen time and my obsession with 'being that perfect girl on the internet' was increasing day by day and I always found myself on my phone editing my instagram story or tryna make my posts look cooler, looking for fancier captions and 24/7 comparing myself to others. I'd go out with my family and friends and would get mad for not getting a good picture of myself or the food. Yeah I literally came to that stage of madness!! That's when one day it hit me that no this is not how i want myself to be. Even though being obsessed like hell, i deactivated my socials! It's been 11 months I'm not on any social platform and god damn, it's actually so peaceful and soothing for me now, I'm so happy I got out of that hole i digged for chasing perfection while I was just going down in it. I'm 19 now and I find myself in much peace when I sit at the dinner table with my family and I'm not looking at my phone! Or when I'm out with my friends and truly enjoying. Although some of my friends are still in that loop of 'acting perfect' but looking back and seeing myself in a much better place, i feel so grateful I changed. All this experience made me realise how precious are close one are and how important it is to spend time with them. This concept of 'best perfect life' blah blah just makes people more anxious and uncomfortable about their own lives. I'm not saying everyone should quit social media, NO! We should have a balance and have a hold of what we are doing. Thank you Ibrahim for making such wonderful videos and reminding all of us that yes reality can be achieved. Lots of love💗

We need to consider that most of the social media users are young people who usually don’t know themselves deep enough or yet and they follow the crowd in their early-stage development - which is normal. What’s concerning is when their reality has become this virtual world and they can’t seem to get out of it or take a break from it - that’s when we can say it’s an addiction or cause for concern. Also, sometimes, it boils down to wanting to be liked, to not feel left out or unwanted. So they seek validation wherever they can get it.

True enough, what we portrayed on social media were unnecessarily true. I have friends who seemed like they were living their best lives, showing it off on social media, but the reality is just, we’re just trying to keep up the appearances that everything is okay. Undeniably, I feel that we’re making less and less meaningful relationships with others. And that’s sad. Everything is just a copy of a copy of a copy.

i really enjoyed watching this video. i think the constant use of social media and showing polished versions of ourselves all stems from us seeking approval, and once we get it, it feels good so we strive for it more and more. somehow we need to find a way to stop living for others approval, easier sad than done lol. it’s crazy how environments and what we consume can really affect our ways of thinking. thanks for this video!

As much as the r/im14andthisisdeep subreddit has the weirdest, most inane posts that are supposed to “scare us straight,” I can’t even lie, those posts have more merit than some random person on Tiktok telling us to be “that girl,” or an influencer who lives on social media telling us to put our phones down. Anybody that has had a dream/vision for their lives knows that to earn anything, you need to go through blood, sweat and tears (no BTS intended). There’s rarely any candle lighting and retro filtering when you can barely sleep, since you’re working so hard for something you believe in. Thank you as always Ibrahim for making videos like this. It really is refreshing to see someone who cares about their own life and others around them. In moderation, social media is great but come on, you have a life to live and people’s lives to change :)

Wonderful video! Glad you're back! You summed up this issue so well. 4 years ago I tried to make it as an influencer because I was in a dead-end job I hated and saw it as a potential way to get rich (the whole 'other people are doing it so why can't you?' narrative was at play). Throughout that experience of constantly making content and trying to outdo myself every time, it was effecting my mental health and self-perception so I stopped. In 2019 I took a break from social media and focused on my real life. I made a career change and had a lot of personal growth that year. Now I've started posting again last year but I realized that I wasn't living as authentically IRL when my mind was constantly wondering "what's gonna look good on social media? what are people going to like to see from me? etc.". It's like that one influencer said, I couldn't just watch a sunset or enjoy my life without thinking about how to share it and how to polish my reality. I couldn't just be ME; I was turning into a socially acceptable, enviable, aspirational digital copy that didn't really exist and wasn't true to my SOUL. Authenticity has become the most important value I hold so I've had to let social media go. I don't prioritize it anymore and I'm finally in a place where I am living my life fully and I'm here for the pain and pleasure, joy and sadness, and everything in between that makes up my human experience. I'm trying to go back to living my life authentically, the way I would have if social media didn't exist: rewearing outfits, not looking aesthetically pleasing all the time, letting myself feel all my emotions, being fully present and mindful in my life. Real life is too precious to ignore for the sake of a fake digital reality that doesn't really matter anyway, and I wish more people understood that! I read a quote somewhere about how people today are using their real lives as a proxy for their digital lives. That people do things IRL for the sake of their digital lives *alone* and I think that's sad AF.

What a read! Thank you for taking your time to share this I really enjoyed this and can strongly relate. I’m so happy with how you made a change, became so aware of the situation and chose to live your life more authentically. It’s such a trap wanting to become an influencer especially if you live in a third world country.

I quit ig a few years ago and honestly it has been really helpful for my mental health. Everything I used to do was dictated by it. The need to appear perfect was so much more important than everything else in my life. It got exhausting and I finally decided to delete my account. I wish I could say I no longer feel like a slave to social media but I'm at least glad it's not to the extent it used to be so I'm okay with that.

Wow dude, I couldn’t agree more! I thought about this issue deeply and came to the conclusion that I can’t live my life in the social media bubble anymore. I’m an 18 year old girl and I deleted my Instagram account 2 months back. Since then life has never been more peaceful and better. All my friends and kids my age are severely addicted to social media so much so that they had forgotten how to live in the reality and enjoy life. I was becoming like them too. I had joined Instagram pretty late as compared to others but still got addicted to it for two years straight. Got so much distracted that I had forgotten how it felt to be at peace. Was always restless to check my phone, jealous of other girls and their so called happy lives on social media. Though it wasn’t easy for me to get back to my normal life after leaving insta but with time things only got better. I would recommend everyone no matter their age to not overuse social media and focus on themselves and their real life instead.

A million people who perform the same dance to the same song, pretending and showing everyone how perfect their life is. I have tried to understand it many times, but I still don't know what is attractive about social media. You're actually so freeing. Because other content creators aren't talking about this. Everything we see in media is the best shot and if it's not. It's generic. Polishing and editing is what makes up media. Even the drab look that goes to Tim Burton movies took work and polishing. And with that being said. In life things don't go great 100% of the time and for some it doesn't go good 10%. And that's why people become immersed in illusion because it's where we want to be.

I remembered when I began to constantly worry about the way that presented online (mainly Instagram) back during the end of senior year. I was going to more events and was constantly looking posting those moments more more often. I actually enjoyed getting the nice complements on my comment section and seeing the number of likes I got rising. I often felt as if I was cooler than how I was actually feeling. My senior year was pretty shitty because my home life and social life was deteriorating while I started dealing with depression and panic attacks, but if I showed you my Insta at the time it would like I was so happy. But then deleting that app (mainly because that app always somehow dragged me into drama) was the best thing ever. I stopped comparing myself to other people and felt like I can live somewhat live in the real life more. I did get a new Instagram account but I keep it a secret because I just need to be left alone if I want to have a good time on social media. I don't follow any models or fashion inspo pages. Just the few artists I like and a bunch of meme pages. I honestly do treat my Instagram account more like an actual photo dump so I can clear up space on my phone. I never felt more free on social media lol Also not having TikTok on my phone has done wonders lol.

I used to follow every influencer on Instagram and make decisions based on what they post to keep up with the trend. I tried to be perfect in every way possible (posting pictures of me drinking smoothie at fancy coffee shops, buying expensive fashion and posting my selfies) but after watching this video I realized I was losing my identity. I became so narcissistic that my mental health is locked to the social media. Every time I see something aesthetic on Instagram it feeds my dopamine rush. It feels like a some sort of scam or fraud. I thought consuming these things make me happy and less stressed, but no. Because of the way people share their life, I feel sad when I couldn't. So I decided to abandon the idea of becoming a social media influencer and stick with photography.

This is such an interesting video! Than you so much for making it. I’ve never honestly liked social media because I understood from an early age that a lot of is fake. And I felt what social media did with my mental health and my way of thinking. I feel like it’s really dangerous and there is so much to say about it. If you believe in this social media world and this fake reality that we made, we end up not appreciating the little things in life and our small accomplishements. Because you will end up comparing our imperfects lives with those “perfect” lives on social media. This can lead to depression and lack of confeidence in your self. It’s just incredibly unhealthy in my opinion. Just don’t follow pages that won’t give you anything and make you feel bad about your life. Be very careful of what you follow. And living without social media is maybe even better in my opinion. Oh and: if you’re one of those people who are making these fake images (on for example KZread or instagram) you should understand that you’re not only being extremely unfair to yourself, but also to those people who are seeing you’re fake content. You’re having a bad impact on them. No need to lie to yourself or others, everybody knows the reality, why are we acting like we don’t?

I am so thankful I got to live a childhood free from social media (tho in the early 2000’s social media wasn’t really a thing yet), and I am thankful my family isn’t consumed by it either. Family events are almost never captured on video or camera, we just experience it and cherish the memories. I don’t really have social media anymore either. I only have youtube lol. I want to live a real life, not a performance for the invisible world that is the internet.

Honestly social media has kind of helped me bc I saw that these people that I love watching are so positive, social, and never fight and so I took upon these characteristics and now I feel like a better version of myself. Even tho that may not be completely true ab the influencers and it could be an altered reality, I was still able to learn from them and turn my life for the better.
