Such a great song, and maybe one of the most-played songs on Easy Listening radio in the late 70s. For more great Lionel-led songs, try "Three Times a Lady", "Still", "Oh No", or "Old Fashion Love". You also might consider doing "Nightshift", their tribute to the legend and legacy of Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson (which they recorded after Lionel left the group to go solo). OR.... if you want to get more into Lionel's solo stuff (you've only done "Hello" so far), you can do "Endless Love" (a truly magnficient duet with Diana Ross), "Truly", "You Are", "My Love", "All Night Long", or "Say You, Say Me". Thanks for reacting!

That's guitar solo is (at least partially) the sound you get when running the guitar directly into the recording console and cranking up the gain knob, so it gets crunchy and has lots of high end (as opposed to the usual method of recording the guitarists amp with a microphone). This track might actually be a blend of the direct to console signal with a mic'd amp (maybe running through a fuzz pedal too).

"Three Times a Lady" is THE Commodores/Lionel Richie masterpiece. White radio, black radio, disco radio, pop radio, even country radio - you name it - that song was inescapable in summer 1978. Be sure to listen to the long (studio) version of the song, it carries so much more emotional resonance.

The original lead was the drummer, Walter Orange, who you've already heard on "Brick House" -- he also did a great lead on their post-Lionel ballad "Only You." He and Lionel shared lead on the next song you should react to, "Just to Be Close to You." Play the long version and you get to hear Lionel preach!

5:00 the guitar sound is from a type of guitar effect known as a "fuzz pedal". Electric guitarists can put electronic devices between the guitar and the amplifier to modify the signal in different ways, called "pedals" or "stomp boxes". There's dozens of different kinds of effects you can put in your signal chain, like chorus, echo, phaser, overdrive, Wah, compression, etc. This one is a classic "fuzz pedal" though.

This song is AMAZING, Lionel Richie is an all time great. There is an ASTONISHINGLY good cover of this track by early 90s metal band Faith No More. I know a metal band cover sounds like a hideous idea but trust me, it is INCREDIBLE! My favourite version of the song to be honest you should check it out, that would be my way of making somebody smile today 😃

I've lived in Alabama my whole life and been a country musician my whole life and Easy is one of my all time favorite songs. Lionel was born and raised in Tuskegee and the Commodores were formed at Tuskegee Institute. They were basically a funk band but Lionel took them in more of a pop/country direction. Songs like Sail On, Stuck On You, Deep River Woman I always thought were country songs. I always thought Lionel should do a country album which he finally did about 15 years ago. On that album he did a very cool version of Easy with Willie Nelson. The horns, the guitar solo and of course Lionel's piano and vocal....Easy is definitely in this country boy's top 5 all-time favorite songs.

When I asked him why he told me that while he was in the army in 70s, that was the nickname he was given while in Germany, so this song will always think of him! Amber and Jay, you just can't go wrong with the Commodores! So many hits and great memories. Another one I'd recommend is "Zoom". It holds a special meaning for The Commodores. It was written by Ronald LaPread and Lionel Richie. Ronald LaPread's wife, Cathy, had cancer and he began composing it and she gave him some ideas for the melody and Lionel put the words to it. Cathy passed away before the song was released. I think you'll really enjoy it when you know the meaning behind it.

I actually saw them on this tour with all of them in silver glitter suits that reflected every color. It was amazing. I have been so lucky to see some of the best. Another song I really liked was "Oh No". I was working at a radio station at the time, and came across it while putting songs from their new album onto "carts" for regular airplay. Carts were like 8 track cartridges but only had 4 tracks, you did not play a record because you did not want to damage it and the carts were easier. Anyways, I heard this song "Oh No" and it really hit me, old girlfriend thing of course. I really thought it should be put into "rotation" as regular play even though it was a "B" side and not really being pushed by the record label. I was still in High School but knew I needed to get the two people that got me the job to listen to the song, I had a closed meeting with them and they listened to the song. They asked if I really thought it was that good? I told them yes and they said we like it but are not sure. They put it on regular rotation and within 2 weeks it was on high rotation. I got a raise and more hours. I am a sucker for love songs I guess. LOL!
