Snow Storm at the Hut (episode 39)
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
The roof is a critical part of a shelter, house or building. A roof traps in heat and protects the interior from rain. Without a roof survival in the wilderness would be much more challenging. In this video, the roof of my adobe hut finally gets the test I have been waiting for. A snow storm arrives in the evening and dumps several inches of snow to cover the desert landscape with a heavenly white blanket. In these conditions it is important to be prepared. See how I deal with the storm and what becomes of the roof of my adobe hut. This series will be ongoing so be sure to stay tuned for the next video.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions):
Who films you?
Me. I travel alone, shoot, edit, upload, everything, all alone. On a few occasions I may be accompanied by a friend, but that has been very rare.
Do you stay out there permanently?
No, I usually stay out in a wilderness area for about a week and then hike out and return to a city for editing and uploading. I have family and other obligations to take care of as well.
How many cameras do you use?
Usually I use just one camera. When I have underwater scenes then I also use a GoPro camera. I get different angles by moving the camera around and repeating the action to create a more cinematic viewing experience for the audience.
Where is this place?
In order to protect the integrity of the natural landscape I prefer to be very vague about the locations I use. There are places that I used to visit that were so beautiful and untouched but the consequences of social media brought all kinds of people to visit and sadly some people do not respect nature and have badly damaged these places. Therefore I do not share locations.
Where did you get your sandals?
I first started wearing sandals on outdoor adventures in February 2014. I’m so glad that I did because wearing these Luna Sandals has really helped strengthen my feet. You can see their selection of adventure and running sandals at this link: www.lunasandals.com/?rfsn=102...
(Note: I receive an affiliate commission from any sales derived from clicking on the link above)
Do you workout?
Yes, I workout, but not in a gym. I have some weights that I use and also do a lot of bodyweight exercises. I also run and sometimes swim. I hike frequently to collect wild foods and to shoot these videos so I'm very active all the time.
Are you vegan or vegetarian?
I wish I could maintain my health on a primal diet that does not include animals but unfortunately that did not work well and I ended up with health problems as a result of those attempts. From my studies, observations of nature, and personal experience I have come to believe that the best diet for optimal human health is a primal diet (paleo).
Do you get lonely when you’re alone?
No, I don’t get lonely. I’m actually so busy shooting video, taking photos and doing so many other things like making cordage, cooking, weaving, etc. that I really don’t have time to think about my lonely condition. Sometimes when something profound happens on an adventure I can’t wait to share it with people, but other than that I do not get lonely.
How many languages do you speak?
My first language is English but I also speak fluent Spanish and Portuguese. I also speak very little Russian. I may soon begin learning more languages.
How old are you?
I was born in 1972. At the time of this video I was 49.
Where did you get the music in your videos?
This series is the first one that I am making all the music myself. I recently made a drum and maracas (rumba shaker). I am now using them to create the intro and ending music in my videos, but before in the past I have used royalty free music from several sources including KZread. Sometimes I bought the music but usually it was free.

Yes! I’m very pleased. I didn’t think it would work so well. Early in the night I was staring at the roof a long time just waiting for water to start dripping inside but it never did.
Chad for a thought on the door; you could make a rectangular prism frame that fits the size of the doorway and layer the frame with sheets of woven juniper bark, so instead of just using a mat of juniper bark, you can have a 2-4 inch thick door of it so that it provides insulation as well as protection from the wind. Also thankyou for caring for your viewers so much, seeing you respond to youtube comments but also to your instagram messages is really kind and I am humbled. Much love from Canada.

So beautiful seeing the snow over the desert.Thank you.
Yey, snow! An important part of camping in the snow over here, is to get insulation from the ground. The best way to do this is to lay out thin branches or bushery in a layer of at least 5 cm, then put a cover like your pelt on top. This warms up the air in between the rushes, and creates a very good protection from the cold ground. The juniper bark might work for this, especially if you put down a layer of branches first. Insulation is key!

That fireplace is just sucking warm air out of the hut and sending it up the chimney as well. Not a great design for that style of habitation. Too inefficient.

@@MrBottlecapBill Agreed, the fireplace is not optimal. A larger opening would radiate more heat towards the room instead of into the channel and chimney, I think.
For a door you could use some tightly woven thatch as a flimsy but relatively good door since it restricts airflow And if you wanted to make it sturdier just bind it to a stick frame to give it some structure

Да, Вы прав. У них зима патчи нет и не такая суровая, чем в России. Но ей надо узнать, как русский человек построил дом в тайге, где мороз и нечего нет седобная. это мужчина даже дров не готовил. У него везде грязи и не окуратность.
Man, I got stuck out in the snow so much this year lol, didn't think I would survive, actually I freaked out and feared my end, just glad some Mexican culture knowledge helped me, wool blanket the entire winter very little use of fire, did make a bamboo container holding some beewax candles I made, Wich was my walk to town heater so i could regularly collect food for a few days. You're definitely getting it down better than me, but have to be sneaky and get around the laws of society for homeless people. So far I lost two camps because I was found, but here I am alive and well, but am planning to leave this city here in Madison TN to be the patch of woods. Yesterday got really cold tho, I wear dresses alit and it is not great for cold temps, but I have learned the body can adapt after an hour or two in it. So I'm fine and dandy. I found my leather hide shirt I made last year, it'll be handy when I camp the thorn vines again. One day I hope see the atalatal and primal hatchets I build in your video's. I finally learned how to draw the instructions down for both. But if interested I can send you the images on the axe build. And we all need you and cave man to do another workout. My friends are asking for that from you. Anyways I am coffeed up badly and must end this comment. I gotta get the yucca leafs today, just finished up a greenwood bow, Wich I have been dying to finish, time to string it. Stay primal, stay proud, thrive on the rock we all call home brother.

Someone may have made this suggestion already, i haven’t read through the 1.1K comments to know. The Navajo are known for spinning animal fibres for yarns. I could see you exploring this medium for socks, sweaters, gloves, beanies, blankets etc for these winters days. You may not necessarily need your own animals but may be able to trade with someone for a few fleeces of your chosen fibre for various projects. Just a thought. Love your content. So educational. Good lesson there. You were in a much more serious situation. But, yes. To be prepared for every possible scenario is impossible but we can prepare for the most important like you did.
something i notice in a lot of these survival/cottage/wilderness home channels. They all seem to forget the purpose of hides/tapestries/curtains. most people think these were just decorations but they actually served a real purpose. They were a layer of insulation. Hung over doors, windows, and even parts of the wall to stop drafts, keep in warm air, and keep out cold. large hearth fireplaces made of stone would heat up and act as heat banks... then when the fire went out they could keep radiating heat while curtains and door covers would keep the drafts out and prevent heat loss. Even the 4 poster curtain beds had that point. they would create a smaller space inside the main room, that stayed warmer through the night and protected the sleeper from drafts.
Your hard work, determination, and perseverance are astounding. Most of us " city slickers " would packed it in long ago. Thanks for showing us what things are like to live completely off the land and what God provides in nature. Preparation and planning are the keys. Well done
Hi Chad ..I absolutely enjoy your videos ... What I have noticed about your furnace is..since it is one one side of your Adobe hut .the wall on the other side of your heater doesn't benefit you that much....if you would have had your heater in the center....it would have kept your hut heated for a longer duration..and if chimney was a little taller ..it could serve as center support for the roof of your hut ..
@ChadZuberAdventures
2 жыл бұрын
Yes, you are right. That would be an excellent design. I think I would do that design on a new hut. I never that of that idea but I also wanted this hut to have plenty of open space inside. That snow is so beautiful.
I knowingly stayed in the southern states this year. The Polar Vortex thing came out of the Northern Hemisphere, and absolutely dominated for a short time. I have been enduring heavy rain storms all winter. And for the first time in 21 years of traveling around America, I'm now carrying a 2 man tent. It's been truly a GOD send for me. It's hard to recover from an overlooked mistake to where you end up using 2 days to dry out again.
Great video as always Chad! Have you thought about potentially extending the 'bench' of the rocketmass heater to allow you to sleep on it comfortably? I feel as though that'd be a very efficient way at keeping yourself warm at night, though it's not me out there so I don't know any better!

It was indeed the purest precious honey .
من الجيد انك خططت لبناء الكوخ فقط كان حماية ممتازة لك حقا انت رجل شجاع

Hey Chad, im not sure if you have any floor heating. But if you have not, you should do it! Its pretty simple, since I believe you do not need that many materials for it.
Beautiful view👍
Chad: How to make more views? Brain: Idk, literally show your own shit? Chad: You're genius.

Another great video! I love the art you put in the description, and even though I have no use for stock photos, it's fun to see you in different characters! Much love Chad!

Here is a door idea... Sheets of leather/hide if you can get some from hunting, saw it into a blanket bag slightly bigger then the door, stuff it with dried leaves or plant fiber, then hang it over the open from outside... This design has been tested and proofed in northern China through the history, back in the old days the shops there were just hanging cotton stuffed heavy duvet over opening door in the winter, this will keep the inside warm even in heavy snow yet still give the customer easy access to the shop.

Kein Problem bro
Guaoooo que bestial Bro en serio sobrevivir de esa manera es excepcional. Empezar desde cero sin nada y ver los avances que has tenido me da a entender que el ser humano es grandioso y no tiene límites.
An idea for the door, you can make a frame with juniper branches inside the doorway so you can use it as a location to secure the door using cordage.
