    Is it possible to use the rocks to funnel the larger fish into the trap? Basically close off the other ways for larger fish to get down stream, but leave enough small holes for the smaller fish to avoid the trap.

    Mash up any kind of crawfish, small minnows, worms, grubs, anything like that. Mash it up into a paste/ chum and make something to hold that chum in your trap and you should catch more fish. But nonetheless great job!

    That's a really great improvement over you last trap, Chad. Try having the trap entrance facing up stream (other successful traps, I've seen, were placed this way Also the pieces of hide are attractors, not bait, but will attract bigger fish, thinking the hide is small fish. Stinky stuff will help too. If you make another, remember most5 of the river fish are a bit small. Make the weave at about 1/2 to 3/4 what you now have. (big enough to see through, small enough to keep them in). Primitive fishing is hugely difficult. Any success you have is a big victory. '-)

    Thanks for your suggestion. It's interesting though that with my first trap I faced the opening upstream and everyone told me that was wrong because river fish tend to swim upstream and the scent from the attractor will go downstream. While a tighter weave will obviously catch more fish, specifically it will prevent small ones from escaping, I really don't want the small ones. Also, that would require twice as much string which would take an additional 40 hours to make plus about 8 more hours to weave.

    Hey, it worked! I’m so glad for you and with you! 🎉 Leave it overnight or for two days next time. About crayfish… They might still be there, as they are active at dusk. During the day they might hide between rocks, you won’t see them. If you wish to try catching crayfish, put half of small fish inside of your trap for bait, place the trap in the water around sunset and wait untill it’s dark, couple of hours. This could be really fun night time activity too, for some full moon night. Happy fishing!

    Hi Chad! For passive fishing you can try the pit method. It's where you dig a trench to a pit then bait the pit and have a cut off point near the entrance to prevent them from swimming away when you check the trap. Cover it for shade. I see this method used for catfish a lot. Personally, I prefer the "bring sausage with me" technique. hahaha =D

    I've made cordage out of fibers harvested from the stems of Himalayan blackberry, which are an invasive weed where I live. Including the time to harvest, clean, and ply the fibers, it took me about 10 hours to make 6 meters of cordage. I found that the best tool for cleaning the fibers were my thumbnails and by the time I was done I had notches 2mm deep on both of them.

    At 1:51 when you enter your hut, we can see your pottery and other things displayed on the shelf atop the fireplace. It reminds me of the display shelves found opposite the entrance (with a central fire pit between) for the houses found at Skara Brae, the single most intact Neolithic village in all of Europe. Admittedly your home is made of adobe, not split and stacked stones, and your hearth is not centrally situated. Nor is the roof made of reeds and animal hides, and you're definitely in a desert instead of the wet, windswept Orkney Islands of northern Scotland. But there is a certain similarity, a continuity of human existence. We're going to have homes, we're going to have shelves, and we're going to put things on them, ideally organizing them so that we know what we have or what is missing at a glance. I think your hut home is going to be very lovely when you're finished with it. I'm looking forward to seeing the tiled floor, but I know there are other things you can do, too. Have you considered finding & baking limestone, or using white ashes to create a plaster to lighten and brighten the interior? (I don't know if you have any limestone in the area; where I live, the nearest limestone is found in the San Juan Islands, if I recall correctly. It'd be a lengthy trip on foot to go get any! But I do know ashes can sometimes be a substitute for making cement, so it's not that much of a stretch to consider a limewash from them, if you can get the colors light enough.)

  • @ChadZuberAdventures

    Yeah, I already have too much pottery. I can't even have it all on the fireplace at the same time. Haha! Tiny homes is how people lived and everything had to be simple because there just isn't room for a lot of stuff. I'm learning that as I go... Limestone, I have not found yet. There are other options to making cement though. Clam shells from the coast. I haven't made lime yet though. I tried using ashes to make lime but I was unsuccessful. I need to experiment more with that.

    That’s a great trap! I’m sure you will have success with it once you find the best spot. Another way…. You may already know this because it’s similar to your turtle corral. You make a circle of stones that is taller than the water is deep, and leave a small opening on the side the stream is running into. Then bait the circle and weight it down. The fish will come for the bait and all you have to do is drop a single stone over the opening and they are trapped. Fish them out at your leisure with a net or your hands. Another way… make a large flat basket, almost like a large plate with shallow sides. Make it almost as big as you can reach. Walk slowly through the stream with the basket in the water in front of you. Hold the basket vertical. When you walk up to a fish, quickly scoop it and fling it onto the bank in one quick motion. This works well once you get the hang of it and you can be more selective of your fish.❤️🤗🐝

    Yes, the funnel method or making a corral with bait to attract the fish is a good idea. I originally wanted to place the trap in the shallow water and make a funnel of rocks to direct fish into the trap but I didn't see any fish in the shallows. Maybe because we had a long winter and the fish aren't that active yet. Maybe next time I can try that... The large flat basket idea to flip the fish onto the shore is a unique idea I never thought of. Thanks for sharing.

    Your area looks like a simple stone fish trap could work, using stones and mud you could build a larger semi permanent corral similar to the one you made for the turtle. The other method i would try, being as the cordage is so valuable is a simple round drop and pull net, like an open top crab net, about the size of a hula hoop with flexible cone shaped netting. Hung from that branch in that spot would be perfect, let a very small stone weigh down the net and keep the hoop tied up to just 6/8 inches below the surface, tie an X across the hoop and dangle bait down in the cone from the middle of the X. When you see the fish in the hoop, quickly yank it up onto shore, collect catch, reset and walk away, In my area if you keep the bait active they will begin to return regularly and will be there most times if you need one.

    Yeah a fish weir would be great in the shallow water where the rocks are but I didn't see any fish there. Usually there are a lot when the water is warmer.... I like the idea of the dip net you described. That is definitely worth experimenting with.

    The net should be a bit like a basketball hoop. Loop the strings equispaced around a hoop, and start tying alternating adjacent pairs of strings, using your thumb or a stick as a spacer to keep the net uniform. I hope this makes sense, it will make the net more solid and keep from unraveling. Pro tip with willow is to dry it completely and soak it thoroughly before weaving. Just like you put a lot of time and care in preparing the fibers to make excellent quality string, dried and soaked willow has excellent results, and does not shrink much or warp.

    I have made a net as you described. A small one. It's hanging in my hut by the front window. I'm sure you've seen it. It just takes a long time to make that way. What I made is actually a basket. And yes, just like I said in the video, it is better to allow the branches to fully dry first. But I didn't have time to wait. Sometimes I do what I gotta do not necessarily the ideal or best way to do something. To save time it was the best way.

    28:50 Ok I have two ideas, first, leave the trap in a shaded area for at least a day, and second, chum the area around where you lay the trap, with the guts of a previously caught fish, especially if going for the catfish. They are well known to eat refuse and other fish. The second spot you took the trap to was ideal IMO, because not only is the water slow and deep, and shady, it's also nice to be able to nap in the shade while waiting for the fish dinner.

  • @ChadZuberAdventures

    @ChadZuberAdventures

    Жыл бұрын

    The first spot had a lot of fish. The second spot had some catfish earlier in the day but when I placed the trap I didn't see them anymore. But chumming the area would probably bring them back.

    Fish like to eat little fish and critters, so maybe make a smaller one with smaller holes specifically to catch bait-fish. If you could devise a crayfish trap, that could get more bait for fish like bullheads who prefer being on the bottom.

You should build a sort of V in one point of the river with the stones and with the trap at the top of the same, in order to force the fish that go upstream to slip into the trap, building an obligatory road. • @ChadZuberAdventures

    @ChadZuberAdventures

    Bait bag is a great idea. I could weave one with a lot of fine yucca string. I made the mesh the size that it is because I also don't even want to catch small fish. I'd rather just catch bigger ones. Tighter mesh would also require twice as much string, another 40 hours of work to make!

  • @rickywhite7578

    @rickywhite7578

    Жыл бұрын

    @Chad Zuber the bag hangs inside just like the bait string you used. 2 inch mesh would let you catch the size you are looking for. Nice lazy current will help keep your bait longer.. increasing your chances to catch fish. Bait that stinks and has blood in it will bring catfish to your trap. I learned this while I was a commercial fisherman. Find dead rodents butcher them up into small pieces put it in the bait bag. They need to stink so out in the hot sun for a day or so should do. Catfish have a very good sense of smell. The more it stinks the more they like it. They really love rotten cheese the most.

  • @ChadZuberAdventures

    @ChadZuberAdventures

    Жыл бұрын

    @@rickywhite7578 Yes, I know about catfish. We used to catch bullheads on stinky stuff all the time, especially at dusk. However, a 2" mesh would allow all the fish here to escape. I did a 1" mesh on this trap and it will hold just the larger fish. I can't make the mesh any bigger.
