Welcome back to the channel where I’m continuing with the ongoing restoration of this 1979 Kenworth W900A truck to turn it into a tribute movie truck and trailer to the one used in the 1977 classic movie Smokey and the Bandit with Burt Reynolds, Jerry Reed and Jackie Gleason. If you haven’t seen it yet, what are you waiting for??? “You know trucking Coors beer east of Texas is bootlegging’ … this here’s Georgia son”
This week, I kick off the episode opening the mail with some cool items including a movie correct CB/antenna for the TransAm, a bunch of cool stuff that was sent in from the fans and some amazing products sent in from Bluetti and Teeho (links below). So trying to address a few of the smaller items this week including the speedo and tach but I ran into a few issues. However, hooking up the trailer was a success as was the drive-in movie date night with the Mrs.

Enjoy watching the progress of this Kenworth W900A project, the ongoing Peterbilt 359 restoration and the upcoming #IronDuke Kenworth K100 cabover I’m planning to build up like the one used in the 70’s trucking movie High Ballin’ with Jerry Reed and Peter Fonda.

If you had the motor from the reefer you could convert it to be a generator so when you're at shows you have a power source. Would look real slick

Great idea 👍 Mind you enough room to fit a small generator in behind the doors in the reefer 🤔👍
Back in the day 50s and 60s trailers did not have parking brakes. They used blocks to hold the trailer. When a truck was hooking up you would hook airlines first then use the yellow knob to hold the trailer so it did not roll away as the tractor pushed under. The blue would be left in so the park brakes were not engaged on the tractor. This is what was told to me by an old trucker.
On the tach cable you could use dry graffite spray lube It will help with the needle jumping around 👍🏻🙌🏼👊🏼🔧🔧🔧
Trans Am at the drive-in, brings back memories!!!
Mark cleans shop.....throws packaging on ground...says "Ill clean that up later.." got a chuckle out of me with that...08:06
It is called a lockable slide mount. you mount the top slide under the dash, push the buttons together, and remove your CB from the car so no one can steal it. I used to use them a lot when I was an installer back in the 70s
Here is my 2 cents for LBL. Start off from the hood white and fade to the blue. Then what stripe you like starts on the hood blue and fades to white. It's kind of retro and modern for that truck.
Awesome video👍👍👍
Thank you for the video Mark. Wish you all the best.
That tool is one slick unit for the brake springs
If you clean and lubricate the Tach cable, it may help with the "bouncing" you are seeing on the dash tach. Same holds true for mechanical speedo cables as well. It probably won't completely fix the "bouncing" issue, but will help the cables last longer at a minimum.
I remember, on my old Macks, there was an adapter that went in the tach or speedo drive. It was round on one end with a key on it for the slot on the drive. It had a square socket or female end for the cable. It also had a nylon disc in the middle which centered it and helped seal it from oil leaking out. As far as the blue brake button, the older trucks had them so you could apply just the tractor parking brakes and leave trailer brakes off so that they didn't freeze up on a guy or gal in the winter when you stopped. If you pull the yellow button it "dynamites" both the tractor and trailer. You were right about using the blue button for setting up trailer brakes. The air systems are a lot different now.
On the old 3 button air brake systems we used to pull only the blue button in winter when idle parking to prevent the trailer brake shoes from freezing to the drums. The tractor rear wheels are engine powered so they could easily break loose if they froze versus skidding the trailer tires on snow and ice trying to unfreeze its brakes.
The blue knob was a Canadian thing Especially on Canadian made KW and Western Stars. You didn’t net to set your trailer brakes to park. Trailer brakes didn’t freeze up. You just set your tractor brakes. When it was time to go you just put a little more power to “it”. And your brakes broke free. The older trucks were built the conditions. Inter-axle, one full locker, and quad locks. When I started driving, most trucks running the Eastern states didn’t have jakes. They didn’t know what they were missing. A bunch of good hands.
This is the drive in movie I’d go to
I found a 1964 brockway at one of my customers in Massachusetts. Mint condition Burgundy and Red! Totally refurbished!
Hi Mark. If I'm not mistaken, you should be able to go to your local DMV with LBL's VIN and request the vehicle's history from the DMV. If the 359 was never plated outside Alberta you would get the entire history from day 1. If it was plated outside Alberta then there would be more research required from those jurisdictions which Alberta DMV should have access to but the gov agent might not be willing to work that hard! 😂
Remember Mark, if it's marking it's spot on the driveway it's full. You have to worry when it quits marking it's spot,,,,,lol
You can find the history through the vin# with Peterbilt. You can also get history on the vin# of the engine with caterpillar!
I like the way Fred snuck in that photo bomb.
The “dilly thing on top” is a quick mount that allows you to move the CB to another vehicle.

I’ve still got one, pretty common back in the day. In these new vehicles it’s hard enough to find room for the CB itself without the bracket.
@stansdds
Жыл бұрын
Yep, back in the 70's and 80's, that mount was a popular thing for CB radios. You could easily move the radio from one vehicle to another, but I think it was mostly so you could remove the radio when the vehicle was parked and unattended.
Truck brakes on, trailer off is great for charging airbag trailers, but it's main use in Australia is for tip over axle trailers
Hi Mark On the cb that is a slide mount. One part mounts to the car and the other to the cab. That way its easy to remove .
Keep going hard Mark. Exciting. Can’t wait to see the complete unit.
That silly thing on the top of the CB is a pull out, push in bracket so if you dont want to leave your CB in your rig, simply pull it out, all connections are at the rear. It's a lot of work and hours Mark, but worth it.
The bracket on top of the CB is a slide mount. It locks in place and can be removed by squeezing two buttons so you can hide it in the trunk when you park the car. It should have a small key hole between the buttons to lock it.
I hate that this man doesn’t have a million subscribers
To Mark. Long ago at the dealer with older cars that had mechanical cable drive speedos that jumped around, here is what we did. 1. Is speedo drive gear and or support housing okay? yes?. Step 2, pull the speedo cable and lube with lite synthetic grease. 2. Is Speedo/Tach still jumpy?. Take out Speedo or tac and oil with lite hair trimmer oil in input area bushings. Just a drop or two. 3. In most cases the speedo jumping was from a sloppy speedo gear drive and dry cable. Same for the tachometer. 4. In either case, the speedo and tachometer go from mechanical drive to a magnetic spinning wheel internal to the unit. Almost like a magnetic ignition pickup on a gas-powered car. Your Tachometer gauge pickup areas could be sloppy. You can test this with a drill, slow then increase speed. Same with Speedo. Use a scrap chunk of the cable into the component to test.
In the UK we where big in to CB radio in the 1980s, I'm sure we used to call that a Snatch Plate / hot plate that's fitted on top of your CB radio, quick release so you could remove it from the car and take into the house and it could not be stolen 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
And maybe you should find the retired cable guy, but him out and do cables for all, that keeps ol’school! Maybe it could fund a “over the top”, duel or brockway build?!
Mark, the old trailers had no maxi brakes. You would back up to them hook up your air lines (with blue knob pulled ) charge the tank pull down hand valve to hookup.Otherwise the trailer was gone. This is why wheels were chocked.Had nothing to do with adjusting the brakes.I think it was late sixties early seventies trailers started getting maxis, I'm that old.Remember before that it was vacuum brakes.
Great day when a new TS vid drops in. Closing credits at the drivein to Mrs TS
Awesome job
Hey Mark, you can always convert to a GPS speedometer. There are a lot of versions I bet you can find a vintage looking one that would match the look of the truck and probably find a matching tach too!
Awesome ending. Love the channel
So cool 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Looking great Mark🤟🇨🇦
About the paint stripper... That aircraft stripper needs to go on REAL THICK to get it all... I feel if you had slopped it on thick it would have eaten it all down! I used to use that stuff real sparse, considering it cost a bit but for good results, more is better! 😁👍

That's a pretty darned neat movie screen! Can't wait to see the Snowman trailer and Bandit 1 projects.
You are correct on the knobs. With just the trailer brakes released it allows the tractor to hold the trailer while allowing you to adjust the trailer. Great work! Awesome to see the old style mechanical workings of the speedo and tach still in use.

That's one use, but this is Canada, back then and even now, no one who knows better applies trailer brakes in the winter time...
What a great ending , I have all three Smokey movies on laserdisk from the mid 80's.
Legend! The final scene absolutely rocked. Hope you had some cools on the go. The progression and change on these trucks is top notch - thanks for sharing
Eastbound and down, was the theme song for my ship when I was in the Navy back in the early 80's. Also heard that Jerry Reed came to the ship and gave them his blessing for using the song. I was on the USS HAYLER DD-997.
Awesome :)
You do have a Great fan base supporting you tho mark
Nice video Twinstick. I can't wait to see what LBL looks like once repainted. Snowman looks good, by the way, when I saw the thumbnail. I want to see Smokey And The Bandit.
That is sweet
Some drive off the front wheel
I could easily convert that speedometer and tachometer over to electronic. I modify instruments all of the time and install stepper motors inside of the gauge housing and with a simple driver box I use I can calibrate the speed.
Trailer breaks are left off in winter time it's one less hassle do deal with so when driving in winter they work and they build heat when stopping and melt snow and ice and to keep them from freezing on u leave the breaks off unless ur on a hill or changing trailers this is a trucking veteran trick
I heard them lac boys in the background!!!
Oh yeah the drive in movie on the trailer now that’s is a classy top notch Saturday night date night for Mrs Twin Sticks 👍👍👍
U make me feel better Mark the top of my tool box looks the same
Good work my friend ! ♥️🍺😎
A caution about the electric door locks, all it takes is a magnet in the right spot and the open right up. The things you learn from the lock picking lawyer.

If you push petroleum jelly down your cables it will lube and preserve them as well as take away the bouncing gauges.

That's a mounting bracket where you can just slide the CB out when you want.
The silly thing on top is a CB radio slide bracket. When the movie was made the CB culture was huge and CB's were being stolen out of cars as fast as you could install them. The slide bracket allowed you to put the radio in the trunk when the car was not in use.

Tractor brakes only during wintertime when you're sleeping or whatever so your trailer brakes don't freeze to the drums.
Best. Closing. Shot. EVER. 🎉
Milwaukee makes a 12v DC charger for most of their batteries. A charger or two and spare battery may be the best fit for your power unit, it may be something other than a polisher that needs the power.
I bought a 1976 from audition. Parked in bad part of North Winnipeg. Vandells stole everything off it Bi-centriel year 1976 :)
Awesome Mark and 2👍👍 up. Keep the videos and posted updates coming. Your doing a Awesome job. Coming along
I have a erratic speedometer in my 97 freightliner. It records the miles or in your case kilometers fine but needle sticks for the speed.. In the meantime I got a gps speedometer from amazon. It plugs into cigarette lighter and it sits on dash at the base of windshield to get signal from the sky. It alternates between twenty sattellites and the satellite number thats following you is on display. It can be switched over to kilometers from mph.
Twin Stick.....you da man. That Drive In movie takes the prize. I take back everything I ever said about you Mark.😅❤
Mark, I just wanted to say thank you for including us normal working folks and showing us the project snowman and trailer. There was a few episodes where a guy restored a snowman trailer, I cant find it on you tube anymore. But thank you for your dedication on these restorations.
Nice way to end this video/episode Mark! 😉👍 Keep up the awesome work, my friend. Can hardly wait to see the Snowman trailer also completed sir. Love ❤️ that old classic Cummins sound that I grew up with back in the day at my neighbors heavy duty tow business. So many great memories.
When your all done with all 3 trucks you should start on building a custom camper inside the snow man semi trailer! Then you could pull it to a show and stay inside! It’d be huge inside!
I enjoy watching your truck show keep up the good work I like your smoking the Bandit truck
I like how ur toggle switches match ur shifer knobs
On top of the CB is the snatch plate that allowed you to remove your CB from car / truck and take inside the house and mount it in there.
Love the pace radio. Great find Mark
You are correct on the parking brakes but another side benefit of having tractor only is for when you park with warm wet brakes on a cold night, the trailer brakes won't freeze on while your eating dinner!
Got to love a retro drive in movie ...east bound and down cheers Mark...love your channel

That reefer shell might just be a good place to hide that BLUETTI power source. throw a solar panel up on the roof of the trailer you will have endless power at the shows.
Those California dusters are awesome on the exterior to clean the dust off in between washes
I would love to be able to drive up there from Indiana just to go to the truck show and meet you and the truck!
Awe man.. I hate those days were you just can't win... Great date night though! I'm curious about the old logo on LBL. It reminds me of the old Walgreens logo, but I don't think it is. Looks like two words, the one on the top in larger letters, one right under in smaller letters, then a line. At first I though Watson trucking, but the top word is much longer. Perhaps something and son, maybe. I''ll stop typing now...
Also only apply truck not trailer when you park for the night when it's freezing at night but wet or sloppy while driving. This way the trailer wouldn't freeze closed.

You'll find yourself using that power unit a hell of a lot. It's easier than using an extension cord! If I'm more than 10 metres from a power point I just grab I just grab mine and use that!
Best I remember the tac gage always danced around on them old trucks
Hey mate the speedo would have picked up from your front wheel mine is on the front right hand wheel you should see a little thread sticking out👍🏻 yours Amy be on the left as mine is RH drive
You have to loosen the nut on the tach and gently move to cable to line up better and then just tighten the nut finger tight.
