As someone who grew up in Cali, and was in the Sierras every single weekend, I’ve gotta say…. That bear was over 300 pounds, second you’re lucky the door lock was broken, because if the bear couldn’t use the handle, he would have just ripped the door off, best case scenario. Never, ever leave food or coolers, even empty, in a vehicle in bear country. They can open a car like a soda can. The black bears here range from 300-600 pounds. Glad y’all are safe, been watching you since the flatbed time-lapse days.

Go to Yellowstone or Yosemite and ask a ranger to show you pictures of cars after a bear broke in you will be amazed As one comment said like a can opener
That's no ordinary bear, that's a Tahoe bear. They're notorious for knowing how to get into cars and RVs, especially the ones that hang out near Fallen Leaf.
Keep it blue and add yellow details. Like Rhett said, racing stripes, mirrors, fender wells, etc. Blue and yellow compliment each other really well.
The spring pockets are not gone just misplaced. My experience, if you want to find them buy a new set. The original set will then show up.

The bears are using a laptop with an SDR radio dongle, and they've programmed it to perform the "Relay" attack where your key's very range limited RFID signal is extended from your room to the vehicle. The only solution is to sneak into their den while they're sleeping, and set the bear's laptop keyboard to Japanese (they don't do well with foreign languages).
Keep the blue, its beautiful. It's a classic, do a classy yellow and black pin stripe that goes from the front fender through the end of the doors before the bed.

What about going with blue fenders, accent to the yellow brand- the way you have done with black on the banana?
I used to work in the collision business and one SUV I will always remember. It was when a bear locked itself in this customers car. I had to remove everything and replace it. There wasn't a panel, seat or seatbelt, or item in that car that wasn't destroyed. Even the dash, steering wheel and headliner. It was beautiful on the outside and not a scratch. You open the door and you couldn't even recognize what anything was. It is forever burned in my brain!! LOL
Bears have an incredible sense of smell. Decades ago I was camping in bear country in California. I had mixed up some powdered milk in a 1 litre plastic bottle, and put it under a rock in a stream to keep it cool till morning. About dawn we woke up to see a bear holding that plastic bottle like a baby bottle drinking my milk through holes he had punctured through the bottle.

The sense of smell of bears is said to be 8 times better than that of dogs. In one nature documentary they showed a polar bear that smelled a seal from 8km away that was underneath the ice. He moved there and broke the ice catching the seal.

At Yellowstone, bears learn how to rip open any car. They even learned if food in in the trunk, that it is easier to rip open a door, then tear out the the back seat. It is an easier way to make a living than foraging in the wild.
Drove one of these configured as a flatbed dump in my early twenties. We used it as a stem truck. Worked for a winery and the left over stems (after the grapes were striped off) went in to the truck to be dumped out back for compost. Also drove it on the California Bay Area freeways to pick up barrel racks and such. Steering wheel had 45 degrees of free play so it was quite the thrill to drive. It was the exact same color blue, so I need to see some blue retained. How about a yellow body, but retain the original blue hood. Yes, it will look goofy, but if that is the intended plan, then it's OK.
Our friend was in WY and had a bear break in their new Ford 4-door truck. All doors were locked. The bear got his nails in the rear crack or edge of the rear door. He then pressed on the door itself while pulling with his nails and was able to pop the door open. Amazingly, the door was not damaged. The lock worked and the door was not sprung.

I spent 10 summers of my life working a YMCA summer camp just outside Kings Canyon National Park. I've seen the aftermath of bears ripping locked Camry doors open, and going through back seats to get to a Subway wrapper in the trunk. You NEVER leave food in a vehicle in the Sierras. We'd have bears come down from the park to our lake, and have had to have the ranger come relocate them back, and lake maintenance had a shotgun with salt shells to chase bears off the properties. Our garbage sheds were constantly being rebuilt, and the raccoons would work in cohorts with the bears to get into them! Good years!
Best to let the bears have any food that they want. When I was one years old my mother had me in her arm when we were in Yosemete. My sister had a sandwich in her hand (about five years old) and she taunted the bear with it which was a mistake. The bear came for the sandwich and my mother stepped in front of it and it bit her. All of this happened while she was holding me. Not a fatal attack. I think it was just a nip to let my mom know to get the hell out of the way and let my sister know in no uncertain terms to release the sandwich. Not very smart to taunt a bear with food. Not sure if my sister ever learned her lesson though. She is over 80 years old and still obnoxious. Fortunately she did release the sandwich on that incident.

Good thing you got all these experts to explain your mistake! Spent 10 years as a park staffer, and this happens all the time. Bears are incredibly smart. I have no idea if it was really a ranger as the story goes, but there’s a saying that the challenge with bear proofing things is the significant overlap between the smartest bear and the dumbest human. It would be interesting to see how it got into Blue Steel, maybe you’ll find a broken door latch later. Although I would not have recommended the whole walk up and knock on the window technique, it worked and it was fun to watch!

Bears have learned to open door locks on vehicles, and teach their Cubs to do it so it won't become a lost art. But they only attack vehicles with food in them. When camping in Florida, they tell you to bag your food and hang it 20ft up in a tree, 200 ft away from camp. Also eat your food 200ft from camp, so there are no orders of food in your camp.
@Yugemos

Matt is just one 'classy' man - no doubt about it. Can make a good story out of anything. Can't help but love the guy. - Right?
I think that factory blue should stay with some old school, hand painted faded and worn Matt's off road recovery logos. I would also put white bumpers with a white grill. A long time fan.
This video was just all over the place...... and I loved it. I LOVE THE OUTROS TOO!!!!
Keep the Spud Truck blue, but put a couple of thick yellow stripes down each side, like a "belt" around the truck. Roughly waist high with the floor of the truck.
Lived in Truckee for several years. NEVER, EVER, leave food inside a car. BTW your bear was at least 2 bills or close to it - not 120! Also black bears won't attack unless you move threateningly towards them when they're cornered or towards a cub that's with them. They're as scared of you as you are of them, but sometimes they do faux charge at people who then turn and try to run... that can trigger their prey drive and result in a nasty claw-filled swat. Some states are even experimenting with bear feeding stations to lessen their desire to raid campers' and backpackers' food stashes. Bears around Tahoe and Truckee are adept at getting into vehicles - they are good at operating door handles. I left the turnkey in our trash bear box once and the bear twisted it and got into the box - littering the trash all over the place, followed by squirrels and crows the next morning. They'll lift up garage doors that aren't locked into an opener mech and crash through sliding glass doors to raid kitchens, especially in drought years where there's less food around in the wild. The bears around Homewood and Tahoma along Lake Tahoe are particularly problematic. You're just lucky they didn't mangle your vehicles more... I've seen them do a lot of damage! Doritos, Cheetos, chips etc are the most common attractors!
Those south lake bears are incredibly smart. I used to camp there every summer with my family and the bears would wait til Sunday morning to stroll through the campground and get into the dumpsters. Those bears really don’t want to have any conflict with people. They just want your food and then return to the woods.

I said this elsewhere, but as someone who lives in the foothills of the Smokey Mountains, we get black bears coming down into Gatlinburg all the time (huge tourist spot). They always get into trash, and when asked why they don't just design trash cans that are bear proof, the forest service replied "there is significant overlap in the intelligence of the smartest bears and the dumbest tourists."
In the Sierra National Forest, we are schooled on no food no food in vehicles at a very young age. Bears have lock picking abilities. Seriously it's good to see cooler heads prevailed.
I just saw a 2nd Cousin who lives in Lake Tahoe, CA and is familiar with aggressive bears out their. He had one get into his house and do like $1000's in damage. Those bears are smart to figure out how to get into the cars. The fabs you showed are great and can't wait to see them in operation. I hope the work on the School bus is done soon so we can see its results.
IF IT WERE MY SPUD TRUCK: I'd have robby push the dent out the best he can from the rear. There will be a mark, but it's part of the story of the spud truck now. KEEP THE PATINA BLUE! no one will ever see the small creases where the dent was pushed back out and rolled. Then have robby add two 12" wide perfectly gloss MORR yellow racing stripes. The have a hand/brush sign painter paint on the MORR logo on the door in yellow so it looks old timey. Then I'd also do yellow wheels! Maybe some yellow pin striping and the MORR contact info on the bed side too. Vote this up! 👍

My vote goes without a doubt for yellow racing stripes on the spud truck! One horizontal racing stripe and one vertical 🇸🇪😊 And chromed, curved top, plain end stacks 💪
You all got lucky leaving that much food in your vehicles... If they weren't unlocked, the bruins would have caused thousands in damage to get in. And yes, they know how door handles work. Cars and houses too. I live near Tahoe and tourists cars are just bait so our cars get left alone, haha...
For the spud truck, I would paint the exterior yellow but keep the interior blue. It makes sense to paint it to match the rest of the fleet vehicles. But keeping the interior the original blue would just be a nice reminder of what it was.

Even without the full yellow paint job, it will still be recognizable as a MORR vehicle. It just needs your logo in the sides. You could paint the rooftop yellow and put a large logo on it so it shows up well on the drone shots.
34:45 - If it were my truck, I would do yellow to maintain brand consistency, but go with one you like vs being random and available, or has a really cool story to it! Maybe even like a CAT Yellow or something with an industrial vibe to play off the size 🎉 You could also do yellow over black! Since your logo has more than one color in it, but definitely enough yellow where you’re not wondering if it’s MORR pulling up!

Matt coming out looking like a 19th century settler in that undershirt got me
I have fond memories of riding in a Corvair in '61. Our 5th-grade teacher at Santa Monica Jr. Academy promised all students who finished 100% of our math homework a ride downtown to get Danish Pastries. I never knew I liked Danish Pastries until then and it also instilled in me a love for math.

11 thumbs up makes your comment 11% better
Somewhere there’s a bear in a MORR t-shirt telling their horrific story of human interaction- “but I did get this cool shirt” Speaking of, there’s a new idea for shirts
Paint the sides of the roll back bed matt yellow, polish the cab and leave the door fix marks, then paint everything else black. 👍
Rhett’s the only one with ear protection. Good, he'll hear high frequencies well into his 60's. Foot approved.
Matt your bear impersonation was perfect! 🤣🤣🤣
You got so lucky. Looks like he didn’t tear the crap out of your interior or take a crap in there. lol. Glad you all lived to show us.
The spud truck needs a little heads, cam and intake lovin and a set of long tube headers! It would definitely wake it up.
Been watching MORR from the beginning and I've never laughed harder than I just did watching Matt impersonate a bear. LOL!!!!
Bear eating victory pie, had me in stitches

Yep, the bear was celebrating its own little victory.
lol it happens everyday here in Tahoe. No food, drink (opened or not), gum, wrappers, diapers, smokes, fishing bait, cosmetics, medicines...you get the picture. Lucky he didn't get stuck and tear out the entire interior. Lock those doors without anything inside.
There is a saying in Bear Country California: Do not leave food or coolers in cars, the bears will get in and eat everything, sometimes the car!
Here in North Carolina those Spud Trucks are everywhere…. 90% are in top notch looking condition rust free and no dents but they just sit around collecting dust…. North Carolina has a lot of farming
Blue and Yellow are complimentary colors. Keep the matte blue, it looks fantastic.

We can call it Matt Blue
That Powder Blue is beautiful, I agree with keeping it. One of the good things about having a brand that's grown so much now is MORR is the brand now, the yellow isn't required.
Hey Matt I'm glad your bear encounter did not get any worse than it was I've heard of people camping and coming across bears.
I live in Southern California, I have video of a bear opening a door to a pick up truck. He came back the next night to attempt another try on my Rivian without food in it ( it was so new that it never had food in it...) Bears are incredible
My dad built his cars and raced on the oval dirt track before I was born. He taught me how to drive and it was like a track day. I love watching you and your boys.
With that door being repaired, it would be nearly impossible to match the blue. I would say, paint the truck your signature yellow, but keep the hood center the original blue. It will be visible from the driver's seat, and a fitting homage to the the truck's history. And as someone already said, the blue and yellow are a complimentary color combo.
Glad to see Matt wearing his Mormon undergarments lol
Matt, the Spud Truck should stay in it's original blue. All you need is the MORR logo on the door, after you get the dent fixed of course!

I made the same comment. They can always bring in more yellow on the bed if they want it more yellow.

It will look sweet with the same patina it has now.
Great to see no people or wildlife hurt during this trip! It was so fun to see you guys on the Rubicon & having the Wrecker. So AWESOME to see you get Deja Blue Built for Robbie! Really cool to see the companies step up helping with parts to get the build done too!
Matts reenactment of the bear is fantastic :D
Matt, the Spud Truck needs some yellow pin stripes with yellow accents on parts and the bed
Garbage bears are crafty, once they know food is available in a location they will keep coming back. Lesson hear is " don't leave food in your vehicle" Matt and his team are really lucky that the bear didn't tear the seats up.
FabRats in a suit I'm sure 🤣🤣
31:00 Here is Matt out in the wild watching his little baby creation get adopted up the hill by Robby. MATT is a happy dad! Lol
Numb nuts for leaving food in your truck in Tahoe. It’s super easy for them to open car doors. You’re way lucky he didn’t destroy your interior. I’ve lived up here since ‘82 and have had many run ins with bears. Really fun when they break down your back door and come into your house with two dogs INSIDE and a human undergoing chemo treatments.
VERY FUNNY reinactment. Glad you're all safe and have a great story to tell around the campfire.
Love to see a Rubicon challenge between as many channels that will join. That would be an amazing video.
