Skylar Diggins Rips NBA Players

Skylar Diggins spoke out on NBA versus the WNBA. Rick Strom, Ryan Davis, and Jayar Jackson break it down. Give us your thoughts in the comments below!

sports.yahoo.com/skylar-diggi...
“WNBA players are pushing for higher salaries, better travel accommodations and more attention.
Somehow, Harrison Barnes got caught in the crosshairs.
Skylar Diggins, via Wealthsimple:
I’m the highest paid player on the Dallas Wings, and my salary is in the low six figures. [Harrison Barnes, the highest paid player on the Dallas Mavericks, made $24 million last season.] He’s definitely younger than me. Do you know his stats? Was he an All-Star? I mean, it doesn’t matter. But last year, I was First Team All-WNBA, which only goes to five players. I was also a WNBA All-Star for the third time.
Diggins is better in her league than Barnes is in his. But the NBA generates far more revenue than the WNBA.
WNBA players should get as much compensation as they can negotiate. There’s a case they’re underpaid based on current conditions. There’s an even better case their product would improve if they were treated better. Due to the WNBA’s low wages, many WNBA players play overseas during the offseason. Couple that with long commercial flights, the players get worn down."

Skylar is a great player but she's ignorant to how a business works and she's sexist. She wants women to get paid more...just for being women and that's not reality. NBA players aren't paid based on being men...they are paid based on a revenue split with the owners. WNBA teams make $0 or operate at a loss so their players are in fact paid well based on what they generate

NBA was founded in 1946, WNBA was created in 1996. Took 72 years for NBA players to get the money that are able to get right now. You know what NBA players were making in their 22nd season, less than 500,000. Bill Russell was only making like 100 grand. So WNBA players who think they should automatically just get money need to wise up and see how long of a process it took for the men to get their salaries. And instead of being counterproductive by showing resentment towards the men, figure what you could to help the WNBA to get to a point where more fans are excited to watch the WNBA, and more money can come in, and then negotiate more tv time and better salaries.

Timo Cruz I'm not talking about the inflation, I'm just talking about the marketing and promotimg and time it took for them to get to a point where the league is successful and makes enough profit for the players to get more money. Skylar Diggings and others need to realize that the WNBA first needs to make profit and revenue and be successful enough in order to negotiate more money for them. I'm pretty sure the WNBA games don't even sell out their seats.

Also Sears is the only place I've seen that even sells WNBA gear, & that was when the WNBA was still in it's infancy. And they only had one rack of a few different teams jerseys (no hats, t-shirts, jackets or anything else). Also I have a 15 year old daughter who plays Basketball & she's been playing since she was 8. And over those years I have been to many of her games & tournaments with her school & AAU teams including many out of town & out of state games & tournaments & NOT ONCE have I ever seen ANY of those young female players wearing any kind of WNBA gear. I use to play in an "under six foot" men's league. Even that was more exciting than watching the average WNBA game. FYI we didn't lower the rim or use a smaller ball and we had no trouble making a layup or shooting from the outside. Also we didn't get a dime for playing. We had to pay league fees, tip the refs and buy our own equipment and uniforms.

The NBA earns $7.4 billion each year (without losing any money), $89 per ticket and an average viewership of 15.14 million viewers for the Finals. The WNBA earns $60 million annually (losing $10 million annually and compensated by the NBA), $17.42 per ticket, and an average viewership of 231,000 viewers. Ladies, do the math.

True. And some women are into sports. But just like most men they tend to gravitate towards the NBA or NFL. The men leagues. We want the world to be equal and let women do everything a man can or vice versa. We will find there are limits. Men cant give birth. Men don't look good in a skirt. Men can't argue much without getting a migraine. We want to say both sexes are equal, but after that Boston game when Rondo played out with a broken arm and no smirk, and looked possessed on adrenaline that's when I realize some of the guys (Athletes) are no joke.

NonyaBusiness! the analogy you made comparing female and male supermodels' compensation is the most accurate comparison I've seen on this issue. I think Skyler Diggins has a point in that perhaps the WNBA players should be getting a higher portion of the revenue sharing pie since they're the actual commodity...BUT we can't escape the undeniable fact that the league simply isn't that popular. I wish that WNBA players would focus their attention on cultivating a female fan base FIRST & FOREMOST before making the arguments they seem to be making RE equal pay, etc. If American women/girls don't support the WNBA how can anyone else be expected to? Anyone who sees that as sexist simply isn't being honest.

Jeremy M. Thompson - I had Liberty season tickets in the 90s. I supported the league because I followed Women college ball back in the 90s and wanted basketball all year round. It was family orientated back when the league started. Funny thing is that the primary Liberty customers were men showing up with their daughters. Not women but mostly men. I mean that was how it was marketed as guys bring your daughters to the games. Why because they were unable to attract women to the games. Most of the women that were showing up were lesbians.

Cliff D The Atlanta Dream get families and the father bringing their daughter to the games. Unfortunately, they usually only come for one game and never come back. Last season, they had a marketing campaign for men to buy season tickets called "Be A Man." I decided not to renew my season tickets due to that campaign. Instead I use an app for $30 per month that gets me into many different events complimentary. I will never go back to season tickets for the WNBA. I'm seriously considering opting out from their games. As this is coming from a guy who followed his sister's games in grade school, helped out his girl's HS team, managed a D1 women's basketball team in college, and follows women's college basketball religiously.

DC SooWavyyy : I don’t mind the layups, but they don’t attract female fans. It doesn’t help that a lot of them are lesbians. Men like sexiness in women’s sports. Women’s tennis is sexy. Women’s beach volleyball is sexy - even though a lot of lesbians play that sport, too. WNBA basketball is a great product, and the women actually play the way the game was meant to be played. Their fundamentals are better than the men’s. But the men are far more creative and have better athletic ability. They’re more explosive...it’s just a better look. I feel for the women, but until they attract full arenas they’ll never make what the men make. Also, this is an attempt to dig into the men’s pocketbooks. THAT AIN’T happening!!!! The NBA has already carried the WNBA for years. The league doesn’t even make money, but the NBA recognizes the opportunity to allow the women to be ambassadors for the sport. They have the WNBA’s back, but that doesn’t mean these women should be eating off of the men’s plates.

Still, the entertainment factor was always there, not as globalized in a way, but the sport became dynamic after the mid 70s. So, if the WNBA can reach this status, who knows how much these "women" could earn in 30 years? And we already know the answer, they will never become a relevant product. If the lowliest bench-sitter on the worst team in the NBA went to the WNBA, he would be leading that league in everything: PPG, rebounds, blocks, steals, assists. Skylar Diggins couldn't hope to be the 12th player on the Phoenix Suns (the worst team in the NBA last season), not in her wildest dreams. There's a reason we all prefer to watch male athletes perform: they run faster, jump higher, throw farther, and hit harder than the most elite female athletes. She needs to stop deluding herself.

Bottom line....women's sports has always had an uphill battle regarding fan interest. Women themselves don't support it, but they fully expect men to support it. Women complain, but won't step up. You can't FORCE men or women to watch your sport. The NBA has run a charity in carrying the WNBA - it can't stand on its own. I believe only one or two of the franchises are privately owned. They allowed the teams to have ads/sponsors on their jerseys early on to allow for additional revenue streams (the NBA started doing it not out of necessity, but greed...hahaha!). They don't generate the revenue that NBA franchises/league does, so she can't expect salary and revenue sharing parity with the NBA. She spouts all kinds of statistics and facts, but not ultimately what's behind those numbers. Yes, the women still have to go overseas to make millions (Russia pays them millions, gives them gifts like furs and diamonds, pays for housing, etc.) Brazil is perhaps the most soccer-crazy nation on the planet, but they can't sustain a women's professional soccer league. What does that tell you about the interest in women's professional sports?

Erm not rlly. What I find is the most successful duel sports is when woman can compete in their own conditions or against men themselves. Tennis is popular for both genders. Poker (ik, but by some is still tech a sport) gives females opportunity to be successful without paygap. MMA on both sides of the spectrum is also doing well. Overall, their is interest in Female sports when their interesting. (Srry if his was a bit difficult to read)

@@iwhatwasthelastnell8829 You're talking about individual sports. I was referring strictly to team sports, and I think you know that. Even with individual sports, you'll find there are a couple of dominant women that get promoted to carry the whole sport. MMA is carried by men. There's usually only one or two great female fighters to promote at any given time. Female combat sports are still relatively new, and there just isn't a depth of competitive talent available to truly carry it. Historically, the same can be said of tennis, though there's more depth of talent. Throughout the world, women's professional team sports struggle.

Since its inception in 1997, the WNBA has never had a profitable season. They simply can't afford to pay their players any more than they already are. In fact, they can't afford to pay them the salaries they are already making. Get more viewers. Get more sponsors. Get more air time. Get higher salaries. It's a simple problem to understand, but a difficult problem to solve.

The problem with the gross revenues thing is it doesn't mean much. Gross profits would the appreciable standard. To use an example. Lets say company A, a car dealership buys a high end car for $70,000 and sells it for $100,000. There gross profit is $30,000. They may pay out $20,000 in employee salaries and keep $10,000. In this scearnio the employees get paid wages of $20,000 (20% of the gross revenue and 67% of the gross profits). The owner of the dealership gets the other 10%. Company B, also a car dealership buys the same car for $70,000 but due to an economic recession and lack of demand, they can only sell the car for $60,000 taking a $10,000 loss on the car. The employees only get paid $6,000 rather than $20,000 so they only get 10% of the gross revenues rather than the 20% in company A and the owner of the dealership takes a $16,000 loss ($10,000 on the car and $6,000 more on the salaries) The problem with the WNBA is there are no gross profits. There is a gross loss. Its estimated that the NBA covers the 10-12 million dollar loss each year. If you give the WNBA players more money you are just increasing the loss. WNBA salaries come down to how much the NBA are willing to subsidize the WNBA. If the NBA is willing to subsidize the WNBA 20 million rather than 10 million you can increase the women's salaries, but basically the increase is due to the NBA transferring money over to the WNBA, not the women getting a larger share of the profits because there are no profits.

You can't ask for more if you already need help from someone else to keep your league going. Funny how none of the WNBA players complaining want to talk about the NBA money their league is getting.
