Scientifically Dismantling the WNBA Pay Gap Argument

The WNBA has been around since the late 90s, and it seems like the only time they're relevant is when a player gets thrown into a Russian prison, or the women are demanding a raise.
As someone who's been a fan of the NBA since I was 8 years old, I've never really cared or noticed the WNBA- and I know many of you watching can relate.
In high school, my friends would always poke fun at how bad the WNBA is- I didn't know anything about the WNBA then since it was never on TV.
But I'll never forget the first time I was exposed to the league.
ESPN was doing an interview with a WNBA player- her name's Brittney Griner- you may know her as the WNBA player that was trapped in Russia.
Now Griner is 6'10".
And the interviewer asks her to throw down a dunk because it's uncommon for females to be able to dunk on a 10-foot hoop.
She goes up and misses her first attempt.
At that point, I'm thinking, 'ok, everyone gets one.'
Before trying her second attempt, she makes sure her laces are tied.
and after that dramatic build-up, she misses again.
At that moment, I'm thinking this has to be a skit- but nope. It's 100% real.
Now don't get it twisted, she'd probably cook me 1 on 1, there's no doubt about that- but really? This is what the best women's basketball league in America has to offer?
If you google WNBA dunks, you'll find a 2-minute compilation of every dunk that's happened in the last 26 years. Spoiler alert there's been less than 30, and only 8 players have been able to.
If you google WNBA highlights, the top search results are 10 minutes of WNBA fails.
But you know what? Anyone can stitch a bunch of lowlights together and make something look bad.
Just look at what Shaq did to Javale McGee early on in his career.
However, what truly convinced me that the WNBA is as bad as everyone says it is was this video that went viral this past summer.
So, just to give you some context, some WNBA team won a chip and decided to throw a parade expecting their fans to show up.
And nobody showed.
Not a single soul.
Despite the fact nobody cares about the league, the players aren't better or even as good as the NBA- even if they say they are.
The women of the league keep coming up with more arguments about why they should be paid better.
Why aren't they paid the same as the men?
First and foremost, let's address the elephant in the room, why is there a wage gap?
Statistically speaking, between the two leagues, there's a major difference in fan attendance and viewership.
The WNBA had 379,000 people tune in to watch during the 21/22 season across 4 major American networks.
Compared to the NBA, the NBA had 1.75M viewers that same season across the same networks.
More viewers = more commercials which = more money.
Last year, the WNBA generated $60M in revenue through tickets, merch, commercials and sponsorships.
Whereas their counterpart generated $10B through the same means of sales.
Finally, there's also a difference in the games played.
Each team in the WNBA plays just 32 games a season, plus playoffs.
And in the NBA, teams play 82 games plus the playoffs.
Fewer games = less screen time. Less screen time = fewer commercials, and fewer commercials = less money.
The more money the league generates, the more money it has to distribute among its players.
That's why there's a wage gap.
Despite people's assumption that the reason for the WNBA's lack of success is due to sexism- it couldn't be further from the truth.
The WNBA is subsidized by the NBA because women wanted their own basketball league.
And what happened?
Barely any women show up to the games.
Do you know what's even more ironic? More men watch the WNBA than women.
So in this video, we are going to analyze and dismantle three of the best arguments that WNBA players have come up with on why they deserve to be paid more.

Though this may hold SOME weight in certain avenues it’s just the fact that the WNBA is boring and the players(mostly owners) are too stubborn to lower the rims. Even then lady’s just aren’t as athletic as their male counter parts which inherently will gather less attention. But combat sports and table or track sports are different. Both genders are able to do them without changes or stuff like that. Some people men included would happily watch the WUFC over a men’s basketball game. WNBA is just not it is all

They need to gain female viewers and fans and stop expecting men to pick up the tab for them. You could lower the rim to 5 ft and no one would give a single shit. Women don’t watch at the same levels men watch sports and therefore any bullshit changes you make to the sport is only to convince men to watch. That’s the problem. If women don’t want to support and spend their money on female sports than why bitch and moan about a gap and expect men to close the gap or cater to men to make the sport worth watching? It’s so easy to understand.

You know the most successful women’s basketball program ever and he keeps it real like they have to realize this is a product, not a sport I mean look at the NFL and NBA they do a lot of rule changes that benefits scoring, because generally people like watching high score games for the Casual audience would enjoy higher scoring games I mean that’s why when NBA players play FIBA is a completely different game because one was made to be more enjoying all the others just purely the sport and I think it’s ridiculous of these chicks with a smaller ball of shorter three-point line Ellis 30 game season think having a 9 foot rim is the worst thing ever 😂

Well said, except I would change "pay gap" to "profit margins". The WNBA players want equal revenue shares, but this isn't possible and is a bit misleading because profit and revenue are very different. The NBA makes so much revenue that despite their players getting ~50% of it, the owners still profit. The wnba doesn't have more money to give because it isn't even making a profit. It's all about the profit margin.

4 years ago, when my son was in 8th grade his gold level AAU team played the local HS girls Varsity team who went to the state semi-finals here in California. They played half the quarters with the full sized ball and half with the women's ball. The 8th grade boys won the standard clock game 114 to 17. This includes the fact that the boys were no longer allowed to fast break after the first quarter. They also basically goofed around and loosened the D in the second half, where the girls scored nearly all of their 17 points.

He had the height to dunk the ball but couldn't get the jump that he needed to do so. The coach saw Michael's potential and desire and desided to focus on his jumping. After a few months of very hard work on Michael's part, he finally Dunked the ball during an important game against an important high school rival. This league is the living definition of unnecessary stubbornness to try and prove a point. They all try to make it seem like a lower rim would be some sexist disrespect, but none of them realize or admit that in every sport where physical size and body proportions are a serious part of the sport womens is shorter/closer/smaller. Shaq had a point about volleyball nets, but as a former male volleyball player the hight difference is closer to 6.5 or 7 inches, not .5 The height differences are present in everything from volleyball to track and field, from softball to golf. Its not sexist either, its scientific. Women on average will be shorter than men so the heights are adjusted for the differences. And what makes the argument even more illogical is they play with a smaller ball because they have smaller hands, they have a closer three point line to account for strength differences, so why not play on a lower rim to account for height differences?

If the WNBA wants to be really honest with themselves, then they have to look at the standard of the players, they also have to acknowledge that hardly anyone is interested in women's sport, any sport. The exception being tennis. The only other time large numbers watch women's sport is the Olympics. Nobody cares about women's soccer, except for the world cup. Revenue sharing to match the NBA? OK. The NBA pays roughly 50-51% of the league revenue to players. So they get about 5 billion since the NBA generated a net profit of 10 billion last year. WNBA loses 10 million a year. So the players need to collectively cough up 5 million just to be allowed to have their own league while thanking the NBA for subsidizing the other 65 million to allow them to even set foot on an NBA court.

@@theoneonly259 and? Just cuz they’ve trained doesn’t mean it has to stay that way. Should every new wnba player train to shoot on a 10ft just because the previous ones did?

The ball is smaller, the 3pt line is closer, I have no idea why there is such a hard line drawn at the rim height

The NBA should make them lower their hoop a half a foot and if they dont do it then pull back on their funding....

An under 15 boys team would absolutely crush these women. A top 12 and under boys team would probably still win. But hey men and women are physically the same, so go try out for an NBA team. Oh wait, wnba players should demand spots on NBA rosters and get the nba minimum.

It would take only 3 great or good nba players of an average team to trounce any wnba team, game after game even with a handicap they couldn't play defense or rebound they are fucked and for the first time not by a dildo

I think the only thing they can do to give it a point of difference is shorten the shot clock to make it quicker.

As a volleyball player its insane how the rim in basketball is the same height for both genders.

7:45 and this was during Boogie's prime during which he was averaging about 28/11/5 on 45% shooting.

They wont lower the rim, but theyre happy to play with a smaller ball? Its so dumb... lower the damn hoop.
