There IS revenue, actually. Every dollar the WNBA takes in is revenue. What there ISN'T in the WNBA is profit. All businesses have some sort of revenue, but all that really matters is the bottom line, which is what's left over when you subtract expenses from revenue. The NBA generates so much money it can guarantee its players a huge precentage of the pie and teams still make an enormous profit. After operating expenses are subtracted the WNBA loses on average about $10 to12 million every single year. Any other business in America would have shut down long ago, yet the WNBA survives because of the welfare handouts it receives from the NBA. Bottom line: You're right, these women are not only poor entertainers, the're woefully uneducated when it comes to basic economics, despite the fact all of them came from college campuses. It's pure ignorance for someone like Kelsey Plum to suggest WNBA players should get the same percentage of revenue as NBA players. For that to happen NBA owners would have to light even more of their money on fire, which is basically what they're doing with the money they give the WNBA.

It stays afloat ONLY because of welfare handouts by the NBA.

They want the NBA players to give them more welfare. It's that simple. When asked what the solution is to the problem, most will only say that the men should be cutting back on their spending and that they should be giving the WNBA more $$$$ to pay their players more. That is welfare. Plain and simple. That's not how business works in this country. They are truly lucky that the WNBA is still in existence. I think a lot of people forget when the NBA banned dunking at one point for “whatever reason”. They adopted it back when they noticed the consumer wanted that and watched the SMALLER league (the ABA). They brought that aspect back because they noticed the people wanted excitement. They wanted to be entertained. Of course most men would watch women dunk on one another, but I think it’s a metaphor. The game is not always entertaining, it’s bad enough that the athleticism isn’t really on par with what you get in men’s sports that’s why people always talk about women dunking. But you just need to figure out what the excitement factor is and bring that in. It ain’t just “give us more money” without changing the game.

Until the WNBA takes an honest look at themselves and make logic adjustments to the game that will generate more viewership. As much as we want to just lowering the rims it will be difficult to do. But we can look at ways to open up the offense that will help generate more points. Move in the 3 pt line, loosing the ball handling even more. I believe making changes like that plus promoting the right women will help grow the game.

@@bartell20j I get that. Maybe this crop of rookies coming in like Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark that have made women’s NCAA basketball so popular can transfer over and the league can finally make a profit and not have the NBA have to make up the 10-12million dollars to break even. If they start making profit, get more eyes on the league then maybe the can expand and get some more teams. 12 teams vs the NBA’s 30. More teams more opportunity. But I think there needs to be a big attitude shift in the current players and vets cause a crop of popular rookies won’t be the only answer

I’m a woman in my 30s and NBA fan. When I think about the WNBA I still associate Lisa Leslie and Sheryl Swoops (or maybe Hoops?). Now, I’m absolutely tuned into the college girls! I love Angel and I don’t care whether or not she’s the best, she’s adorable and relatable and engaging when she speaks. Unlike this woman on Gil’s show. Listening to that her talk in circles made my head hurt. After watching this video entirely, it sounds like the owners need to grow balls let the players walk if they are unhappy, get rid of the majority of the coaches, bench the older slower women, and lower the rim. And when Angel, Caitlyn, Flauje, etc. come into the league, put them in big markets and drip ad dollars on them! I’ll watch then, but what do I know. 🤷🏾‍♀️

And now you have me interested and watching other videos on this lol. I’m back after one of those videos. I also can’t relate to the wnba players because I have a husband and a son. I don’t identify with lesbians in real life and I’m not interested in paying money to see a bunch of them. The college girls like men… maybe I’m one of the trending names (male identified… 🤷🏾‍♀️) idk, but that’s another huge issue that unfortunately can’t be solved for in this me too era. Just get rid of the league. Make something different for Angel, Caitlin and the rest of the young girls.

Thank you so much sharing your thoughts. There seems to be issues at every level. I know the players are confused as to why everyone is angry with them but it’s because they don’t even seem to understand the league they’re in. If the players laid down on the sword and played with more finesse in mind and was more open to pushing for change rather than just saying “pay me more money”, then we could see major changes in as little as a few short years. I WANT to watch the WNBA but they need to change everything from top down to bottom up.

WNBA players are never seen clamouring for women to watch or attend, whereas men’s hoops rarely, if ever, advertises to girls. They focus on making boys want to play/watch/follow/etc, it’s odd an all-female league would not target females more intensely. Tbh, it’s not odd, it’s as if they know men predominantly watch sports, but rather than appeal to the only viewers they have, the players wish to subjugate fans to whatever lacklustre product they put out there.

Take one for the league. If you have to adjust, in order to make the game more exciting, then that's what you have to do. Old white NBA players weren't dunking, in the 40's, before they brought in Black players. Now, the game is much more exciting, because you have a diverse way of scoring. The NFL used to be a run first game. Now, it's a passing league. They also moved the field goal back. This made it harder to score and developed the kicker to be more skilled, not to mention that the Quarterback had more area to throw inside the endzone. Point is, the NFL adjusted to make the game better. Plus, kids growing up will get used to or know no difference in the basketball goal's height. Otherwise, keep having a minimum fanbase.

The biggest problem with the "more excitement" argument is you sacrifice good fundamental basketball and great techinical development for the "athletic talent" topic which does increase more viewers, but this is exactl what is hurting the NBA players in INTERNATIONAL competition. The USA women will always destroy their international opponents but the NBA men seem to be struggling a bit against the horrificly talent-less European teams that focus ENTIRELY on the fundamentals. The NBA men should be decimating their international opponents but they can't shoot worth a lick, yet they continually jack up horrible three pointers when their game is dribble penetration and attacking the basket, mastery of the mid-range game, smothering defense, and low-post dominance. But because they are so overwhelmingly athleticly talented, they have developed terrible habits on the court and have seem to have forgotten all about sound fundamental basketball, ESPECIALLY DEFENSIVELY!!! The women however have MASTERED the fundamentals especially in international play. The only issue the women have is they miss far too many layups which if they converted, it would help make the game a lot easier. The women's game will eventually pick up and produce good revenue. The men just don't support the women's game enough and that is a shame. The men's game is not even exciting anymore with all these dastardly three-pointers they shoot every game. The WNBA CAN and WILL survive. But, they must do it independently from the NBA. The dunking issue is just jackass dumb. WNBA revenue has nothing to do with lack of excitement. It has more to do with MARKETING. I don't want to see the women become just as selfish and ineffective as some of the most super-talented men ecause then, they would start over-relying/depending on their TALENT to bail them out of close games (games that should not even be close) to win, but I think Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese and others coming into the league is definitely a step in the right direction. I think it would also help if the WNBA went to a 40-42 game format so the would not have to go overseas for the other half of the season rolls around like the do now. That way, we could see a lot more of these gifted players and the marketing at this stage would also be a big boost. We can discuss potential expansion and other issues later, but these are a few that stick out to me.

The women’s college game is way more popular than the WNBA. For this main reason. Do you have a built-in fan base meaning when these girls go to the schools you have families you have a alumni aunt uncles who all come to games and watch and support and a local communities for all these universities. So when you have a turnover every year when you sign one player, you’re guaranteed at least four people from that person‘s family are going to be a game by tickets by merchandise paying for parking that generates revenue. The NCAA works along with title their allocated specific funds to their sport. That’s why the college game thrives.. The WNBA first off they only play a three month season ! You’re only playing 30 to 35 games max! You can’t generate the type of money you want in three months it’s impossible you don’t plan normal NBA areas of 17 18, 19,000 fans. They stopped doing that after it’s inaugural season because it didn’t make money. You playing 6000 to 5000 seed arena Union Hall And smaller venues. And you don’t sell those out.! The biggest demographic that watches the WNBA are middle-aged men. 40 to 60 year old man are the ones watching your sport more than anyone so you can’t say it’s sexist. it’s women who are not watching your sport it’s the younger demographic who are not paying attention to your sport. The fact that people are telling you what’s exciting and what isn’t you’re blaming the audience for not liking the product but they’re telling you what they like. And so, lastly, the WNBA has a real chance with this Kaitlyn Clark hysteria that has been created in college riding that wave and getting her involved with this League. She’s the brightest star League will have in a while. She’s got the imagination of the captured right now from her in college And it’s transferring directly over to the WNBA so let’s see what happens. You will see attendance and TV ratings go up, but it will not go to level they expect! So be ready for more excuses after a first season of Kaitlyn Clark and we’ll see what happens then.

People don't buy products they are not interested in. Women would rather spend their hard earned money on shoes. That's the reality. Peoples time won't be spent on a basketball player who can't make a layup.

Lowering of the rim does not mess with your shot. We play on lower rims all the time. So, we can dunk and throw alley oops. Then when we play back on regular size rims. It has no effect on our shots. So, they use that as a bullshit ass excuse.

Not playing basketball to dunk if the opportunity is naturally there to dunk or layup on a fast break or half court offence then do that

Equal pay for equal work. In the terms of basketball professional leagues. It’s not just the playing. That is the work, but bringing in the viewers and making it interesting and profitable. That’s why the men are getting paid more. It’s not equal work one. If the women’s league wants to make more money, then get more butts in the seats. Stop demanding the world to revolve around you. Professional Sports is not just about that the game it’s self it’s the hype is the enthusiasm the fun it generates the entirety of the organism. You can be very talented at your sport. That doesn’t mean you can build a league and make that big profitable. It doesn’t just rest on your skills alone. Whether that’s right or wrong morally or in your heart that’s just how it works.

This lady is taking the childish road. Just like a child who says, I can do just leave me alone. Then they get frustrated and stomp around. This is the stage the lady is stuck at right now. Which will be followed by, ok you figure it out then. Then when you fix it, you get all the excuses. Well I could have done that. Along with, why didn’t you just show me that before. Not to be forgotten, I guess that will work.

the problem with the WNBA is for a guy i don’t wake to watch high school basketball. and i don’t mean they’re only as talented as high school players, i’m saying it’s all fundamentals and screens and all that, which the NBA DOES HAVE, but there’s also the flare.. Dunks and Lobs and all that. I feel like i could go score 30 in the W. I know i couldn’t lol but i FEEL like i could. because it’s boring.

Gilbert to take on women’s college basketball not allowing players to come in early as a fallacy. It’s that there hasn’t been a big enough to generate that kind of interest for her to leave early with the NL. She’s probably more in college right now that she wouldn’t be. Which is good. The Kaitlyn Clark phenomenon will change the way that looked at at this point. but players coming in early isn’t stifling anyone’s creating better basketball players who come in and stay.

It’s not a fallacy. He’s saying to build the league around hype and enable players the opportunity the same way the NBA does. If players start excelling early in college and build their hype, they can be pipelined into the league, train for a few years and remain explosive.

All you have to say as a wnba player is "I think its great CC is bringing more fans and more eyes to the game and potentially more revenue." Thats it! You don't have to bow down to her or even like her. Ridiculous.

To touch on the "lower the rims" thing. What do they have to lose? They already say they don't get the respect so fuck it, lets experiment. Remember when the NBA had that dumbass ball that the players didn't like? They tried to improve the ball and players hated it so they changed back... If that ball had improved guys' shooting and made it easier to control, players would have loved it and it would have been the new norm. My point is that sometimes you gotta throw shit at the wall and see what sticks. Lower the rims for a season, let everyone know, and see if the league's revenue improves. If it doesn't, raise them bitches back up and try the next thing.

In a conversation whenever i exchange ideas and thoughts about any subject, and the person that im having a conversation with is constantly using the word "like", i automatically shut the person down because it shows that they cant even organize their own thoughts. Conversation over.
