Skidoo G5 summit chaincase inspection and adjustment

Фильм және анимация

Theres been a lot talk this season since the 2023 skidoo summit hit the snow about its chaincase reliability and potential problems. We've seen a lot of chain case failures on these sleds. In this video we show you how to take your chaincase apart, inspect it and adjust the chain.

The TKI fix takes care of having to adjust the chain every few rides, it also addresses the rubbing on the case. BRP sent emails out yesterday saying that there is a specification change coming for MY24 sleds regarding the chain case. Just an fyi

I had heard BRP had some sort of a “fix”, but hadn’t heard any specifics on what or when.

Respectfully....I don't see that worn spot at the bottom of the chain case being from a loose chain...looks like sprocket wobble....maybe when the chain gets loose it allows gear wobble??.. it's strange for sure..thank you for another good vid

Yea, idk, you’d have to have a ton of wobble for it to touch the case there. Probably a combination. Hopefully brp can figure it out and get these sleds more reliable. Such a great sled with an Achilles heel

Honestly, this issue is the one and only thing thing stopping me from ordering a 24 Summit. Would of been nice to see Doo get ahead of this before the spring release but seeing they didn't the Gen4 will just have to get beat on for one more season.😉

Yea, it’s a phenomenal sled, but being left stranded out in the middle of nowhere is concerning. We have 6 G5’s in our group and it’s a constant worry. I heard brp sent a notice out a couple days ago, but I haven’t seen it.

What is your opinion on the TKI fix ? Would you recommend it. Have you heard of a fix from ski doo ? Thanks for the great informative videos.

Honestly at this point I’m not sure. I have been told that when brp does release a “fix” that your sled won’t qualify if it’s been tampered with. I’m just going to keep adjusting my chain tension before each ride until brp releases something. I doubt we will see anything from brp until fall.

Are the failures only happening to the turbo sleds? Is Ski doo covering it under warranty or are they claiming it is a wear item and / or wasn't adjusted right? Can you put the 2022 drive shaft in the sleds, and run machined venom gears instead of cast gears?

From what I understand, at some point skidoo will replace all the 23’ chains and gears. It’ll take some time to get the supply of parts and get them to dealers. My guess sometime before the next season starts. Some people have been putting in the older drive shaft with the appropriate gear to get away from the two-piece shaft.

Good video. Things that have changed since 2022: 1.) New chain and sprockets 2.) Two piece driveshaft 3.) Horsepower increase 4.) New track (on the expert). That's a lot of changes in one year. There seems to be lots of reports of ratcheting tracks. I have to imagine that a track ratcheting puts a tremendous shock load on the chain drive and sprockets. Have you had this issue? To me your missing paint does imply that your chain was loose. If it got loose enough to skip a tooth that would put a HUGE load on the sprockets and chain. On the other hand a ratcheting track would create a TON of track tension and a tendency to pull the driveshaft away from the bulkhead. I can see where the two piece drive would allow more deflection of the tunnel and chaincase and that deflection could move the sprocket towards the area you are missing paint.

I have heard of a few reports of tracks ratcheting on the G5, but that's been a problem on the G4 as well with a turbo. We have 6 G5's in our group and have not had one or therm ratchet. Watch the track tension pretty closely though. BRP did send out a bulletin to dealers about the inferior chain problem about 1 week after I downloaded this video. You should get a new (stronger) chain and gears from BRP, but doubt it'll happen until fall of 2023. Ill post a copy on my Facebook page.
