    I Love this. So many Tolkien commentators approach these tales with a little too much reverence. While your summaries are dense with information, you also vulgarize them and manage, at key meaningful moments, to let Tolkien's prose take over. I've been binging since yesterday. With this one, over a year old now, you seem to be getting in stride, to have found your own voice so to speak. I laughed out loud at your dramatic setup for this episode, only to blurt out: "It was a horror show!" Onward!

    I'm so glad you're enjoying my videos and my narration style! You make a good observation - I definitely try to make my videos user friendly because they're primarily targeted towards people who are new to The Silmarillion. I figure that once a reader gets the basic information down, then they'll be much more confident in their grasp of the material during their independent re-reads. And when THAT happens, the true grandeur of Tolkien's prose will break through, and they'll see Beleriand, Númenor, etc. according to their own imagination :-D

    Reposting the best comment I have ever seen about this chapter: “The story talks about the holes rent in the earth by Grond, but it doesn’t mention the huge trench left by Fingolfin from dragging his GIGANTIC STEEL BALLS across the Anfauglith.” “And Fingolfin did ride, his steed labouring under the immense weight of the elven balls that were dragged in its wake. For they were like great spheres of iron and did rend a mighty trench across the plain of anfauglith. No orc or servant of Morgoth would from that day forth venture near the trench, for the fear that the rider with the massive balls may yer return.”

    Tolkien can tell too much with few pages, I mean all of this actions happened in one chapter. Thank u again, you are an amazing storyteller. Ps: though I know That Christopher Tolkien said he made a mistake and Gil galad was not the son of Fingon, I like the idea. Imagine being the grandson of Fingolfin.

  • @lfwinesroad3399

    @lfwinesroad3399

    3 жыл бұрын

    That's a good question. Christopher Tolkien tells us in the chapter "The Shibboleth of Fëanor" from the book "The Peoples of Middle-earth" that when he compiled the published Silmarillion, he made an editorial mistake by making Gil-galad the son of Fingon. He was going by an older idea for the character that did not match his father's later writings and conceptualization of the character. By the time Christopher had discovered these later writings, The Silmarillion had already been published. Christopher even says, "It would nonetheless have been very much better to have left Gil-galad's parentage obscure" (p.351). The reason I keep Gil-galad as the son of Fingon is simply because my videos only summarize what's written in The Silmarillion.
