My channel mainly provides chapter-by-chapter summary videos for readers who are fairly new to the books "The Silmarillion" and "Unfinished Tales" by J.R.R. Tolkien.
In some of his early writings, Tolkien wrote that an Anglo-Saxon mariner named Ælfwine (lit. elf-friend) managed to sail all the way to the Lonely Isle. And it's there that he met the Elves and learned from them all about the history of Arda. Then he brought the tales back to his home (early medieval England) and shared them with his countrymen. Ælfwine took the Straight Road to reach the Elves, thus, I hope my channel can resemble that path and bring you closer to the magic and lore of the writings of J.R.R. Tolkien.

I so appreciate your work in compiling texts and maps and the attention to the gorgeous pictures. Very careful, loving work.
Well done. And Elena Kukanova is my favorite artist of the First Age.
Quite frankly, you are amazing. You turned what was a bit of a slog for me into possibly the best reading experience of my life. Every day I look forward to reading a new chapter and then watching your recap. It’s going to be a little bittersweet when I complete the story tomorrow. Thank you for your hard work!
Wow! I'm honored to have helped your reading experience be the best it could be! I'm so glad you've been enjoying The Silmarillion 😁👍🙌
I feel like they could make a hell of a movie out of this story. Amazing chapter of the Silmarillion.
Really happy to find this full playlist. I’m currently on Chapter 19 of the Silmarillion and I feel like I’m not retaining nearly enough of what I’ve read, so it’s really nice to have a resource that recaps everything. Looking forward to diving into this playlist, thanks!
Thank you very much! Exactly the summary I needed after finishing the Silmarilion :)
I am so so thrilled to have found this today. What a work of love you've produced. Hurrah!
One thing that I found strange is what is in the southern region of Aman? It seemed like its darkness and Ungoliath resided there and even Morgoth was afraid, but then was it ever cleared out of the darkness when Morgoth lost in Beleriand?
I never thought of that before. You make a good point. Perhaps it was one of those details that Tolkien never got around to hashing out before he died. His stories really do give us so much to think about! 📖
I think this is the best and most comprehensive summary of the Silmarillion.
What a lovely compliment! Thank you so much 😃
Thanks a Lot! I do Love the Stories of the Silmarillion but sometimes it is just too much of Information or namedropping..Your Videos help me a Lot not loosing the fun! Best regards from Germany
That's wonderful! I'm so glad my videos have been helpful to you 😊 Have fun on your Silmarillion journey 👍
Your videos and the pronounciation of the names are amazing!
Thank you so much for the lovely compliment 😊
That was beautiful thanks
Thank you very much!
9:09 I’m sorry but if this Amarië didn’t follow Finrod to Middle-Earth then she’s not the one for him. She’s not worth it and she doesn’t truly love him, for if she did, she’d be willing to go against the wishes of the Valar. True love drives people to commit insane and impossible things and at this point in the story, Amarië comes off as an ass.
I love Beren's response to Thingol just being, "For so little a price do the Elven-kings sell their daughters."
I have just now realized just how Beren and Luthien mirror Aragorn and Arwen.
To be honest, I kind of understand why some of the Elves were wary of the Valar and refused to go to Aman.
"Thanks" hardly seems adequate. I'm just now starting the "Bible" and this and you are just awesome. Helpful beyond words!
That's wonderful to hear! I'm so glad you are finding my videos helpful. I hope you enjoy your Silmarillion journey 😉
I just realised something Eru is like that squirrel from God Of War Ragnarok and the Ainur are the other squirrels the personalities removed. 😊
😄
Aelfwine, can you please summarize the difference between 'Unfinished Tales' and the 'Lost Tales'? I get confused because i think both have Silmarillion drafts or versions of stories in them, but im unclear because i have not memorized what is in which. I rarely hear any comparisons between the works. Ive read both, but it all starts blurring together for me so im trying to find a way to get the names of the heroes associated with the books in my mind. Clearly from your video Galadrel is part of Unfinished Tales, so thanks for this! Subscribed.
That's a great question! The book "Unfinished Tales" was published in 1980, and it has a collection of writings as J.R.R. Tolkien left them (thus the name "unfinished"). These writings are pretty random, and they cover the First Age through the Third Age. None of them are arranged in any narrative form. My Unfinished Tales video series covers each of the chapters of that book. After the success of Unfinished Tales, Christopher Tolkien realized that there was great demand for more of the detailed, unpublished works of his father. So.... The books "The Book of Lost Tales: Part One" and "The Book of Lost Tales: Part Two" were published in 1983 and 1984 respectively. These are the ones that contain the very earliest versions of the Silmarillion narrative/mythology. These two books constitute the first in the 12-volume series "The History of Middle-earth", which is simply a collection of J.R.R. Tolkien's unpublished writings that his son Christopher compiled and edited. This 12-book series was published between the 1980s and 1990s, and here are the titles: 1. The Book of Lost Tales: Part One (1983) 2. The Book of Lost Tales: Part Two (1984) 3. The Lays of Beleriand (1985) 4. The Shaping of Middle-earth (1986) 5. The Lost Road and Other Writings (1987) 6. The Return of the Shadow (1988) 7. The Treason of Isengard (1989) 8. The War of the Ring (1990) 9. Sauron Defeated (1992) 10. Morgoth's Ring (1993) 11. The War of the Jewels (1994) 12. The Peoples of Middle-earth (1996) I hope this information was in the neighborhood of what you were looking for. 😉
@@lfwinesroad3399 Yes it was even more than I expected! Good job! So basically the 10 book 'History' series that came after 'Unfinished Tales' includes stories from it, expands on it and the Lord of the Rings, and provides more unfinished tales. Is it fair to summarize it like that?
@@scod9746 Pretty much! You can definitely summarize it like that 😁
And again, I go through these videos for second or third time this year. I find it to be the most enjoyable way to review this beautiful book, one of my favorites of all time.
J.R.R. Tolkien was a genius.
Agreed!
Your videos are so good with explaining, They all should have 10x the views.
You're very kind. Thank you for the lovely compliment 😊
Great video breakdown of these most epic chapters of Unfinished Tales.
Thank you very much! 😄
I love listening to this playlist as I read through (or this time, listen-through-at-breakfast).
That's wonderful! Enjoy 😄
27:25 this is a beautiful picture, and will be my phone wallpaper now. i love these two characters very much
mwah
☺
Still loving this series. You deserve way more subs and views
😊
This is easily one of the most thought provoking passages in the entire legendarium. You did an awesome job with this video
Thank you so much! 😊
Hey there thank you for making these. By far the best and most fun analysis I have seen on Tolkien's world. You should have some way that we can support you. Join and get to ask you a question or something. Would be glad to be a financial supporter. Side note I would love to cast your videos on my TV but you have not allowed for that. Is there a reason? Anyway again thank you for all you do.
Thank you for the lovely comment! I'm really glad that you have found my videos enjoyable. I'm not on any Patreon or anything because I don't make videos regularly (haven't made one in over a year, in fact!). These Tolkien videos are just my little contribution to anyone who needs some help in better understanding The Silmarillion 😊 As for the casting - lol I'm so bad at technology. I guess I ought to go back to KZread studio and find where I can make that possible. Have fun on your Tolkien journey!
This series is amazing. I can’t imagine the amount of time this took. Truly a thankless job. Thank you for your work.
What a nice comment! Thank you! 😄
Thank you so so much for making this series! A long time goal of reading the book, having started but fallen off multiple times (first try some twenty years ago), getting through it, and not least enjoying it with all it's background, etymology and multiple names, seems very much within reach. I greatly appreciate the work you've put into this.
You are very welcome, and thank you so much for writing this comment. I am really glad that you have found my videos to be helpful because this is exactly why I made them. I just want more people to not only read The Silmarillion, but to enjoy its details in a digestible way. And good for you for not giving up! Have fun on your Silmarillion journey! 🌄
Why can Beren and Luthien just casually change forms? I guess Luthien is the child of a Maia but Beren is just some guy, right?
Old-time Elf magic 😉
Listening to this video again is just so upsetting. What Amazon did to this character is completely inexcusable. It's downright insulting how they massacred her character.
I didn't watch the show, but I watched some reviews. From what I've seen, I would have to wholeheartedly agree with you. I wish Amazon had never even made the program because it seems pretty pointless. If they're not going to stay true to what Tolkien wrote or intended, then why bother at all?
@@lfwinesroad3399The most polite way of saying “what the actual FUCK was that” I’ve ever seen.

Just finished my first read through of the Silmarillion and this series is so much fun! You deserve more subs.
Thank you for the nice comment! I'm glad you're enjoying my videos 😄 And congratulations on finishing The Silmarillion! 👍
Helpful summary
😊👍
Incredibly epic, poignant, and tragic. You do such an awesome job with the storytelling, thanks so much for this amazing content!
You're very welcome! Thank you for the lovely comment 😊
Can´t thank you enough for this videos!! You are a savior 👏
You're so very welcome! 😊
Do you plan to come back to KZread?
I don't have any hard and fast plans as of yet, but I might do a video or two. Thank you for asking!
Really enjoyed your videos. Wish you would do more. Any plans to make more videos?
Thank you very much! I don't know if I will make more Tolkien videos soon. But perhaps! ☺
I came here earlier to find mostly comments from a year ago, and felt kinda sad that this channel never got updated... And then I find this 😆 Hope remains undefeated!

THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH!! Your explanations are fantastic and concise. You can't imagine how useful this is for someone like me who gets mixed up with all the character´s names and drama.
That's wonderful to hear, and you're very welcome! 😀I hope you enjoy the rest of my videos, and I hope you enjoy your Silmarillion journey 😊
Ouch, my heart...
We miss you!!
🥲Thank you so much.
I finished the book a few years back but now I have a physical copy and I might as well read it again. As we all know, a good story is always worth revisiting twice, and even moreso if you and fellow Tolkien YTers have someting to say about it!
That's right! 👍 I hope you enjoy your Silmarillion re-reading journey 😊
why am i crying-
That ending really gets me. Just the idea of maybe getting a glimpse of the Undying Lands
Indeed. Imagine the yearning that caused in Elendil's heart!
Thank you for this overview of a fascinating character. Great work !
Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed this video. 😀
This whole part of the book is so depressing lol
I agree with your observation!
