Very good contents of professor Tolkien's work The Silmarillion. I enjoy so much listening to your story telling. But this episode you dissed the deeds of lovely Glorfindel just as Peter Jackson did in his movie...

@@makitauknl Dissed the great Glorfindel?! Perish the thought! But if you mean that I didn't spend a lot of time on him - that is true. Perhaps I should have taken a little more time in the video to mention his future importance in the Lord of the Rings. Is he one of your favorite characters? Because he is pretty amazing :-)

@@lfwinesroad3399 Yes ofcause he is one of my favorite characters, but when you were mentioning the fall of Gondolin you left him out to my amazement :)) There are tons of lovely characters in the Silmarillion but sure is Glorfindel ranked top eleven along with Fingolfin, Turin, Hurin, Finrod, Galadriel, Ecthelion, Beleg, Luthien, Earendil and Gil-Galad (there are 20 more characters that on other days could easily make the list, i left out Cirdan, Beren, Morwen omg :))) PS: Just like a football game, i would think this eleven would easily win the world cup :)) Finrod Felagund the goalkeeper. Beleg Strongbow, Hurin Thalion, Galadriel and Ecthelion in defense. Luthien, Earendil, Gil-Galad, Glorfindel in midfield. Fingolfin and Turin Turambar in attack :))

Thank you very much! Oh boy, that's a good question - one that I've wondered about but never really sat down and thought about deeply. It always just seemed to me that he was a divinely-chosen instrument. Yes, he made his own good choices (just as Túrin made his own bad choices), but an awful lot of fate was involved in Tuor's life trajectory - events that seem to have been beyond his control. I don't know if we're given enough evidence that could prove that Tuor deserved such an honor. On the face of it, it seems kind of almost unfair that he was bestowed such a charmed existence. But then again, his marriage was the second doom-sanctioned paring of Elves and Men, one that would lead to the birth of Eärendil and the second defeat of Morgoth. So maybe he was given a free pass because of his place in the string of events of the world. Who knows :-D

Yep, I was asking myself the same question. His deeds compared to others are not as worthy of admiration. It seems to me like a whim from the Valar or from Tolkien. It´s a big reward for just being an instrument of fate.

@@srdjanvitorovic5795 My understanding was that even if they had free will, only humanity could "scape" the vision of the world that was shown to the Valars. For me it's like "you got free will, but in the great scope of things, everything is already determined". At least for every race except for humans. It's like a very personal interpretation of Tolkien of Catholic beliefs about God, God's plan and how that is somewhat incompatible with free will

Great job! I like your pronunciation of the R. The Silmarillion is my favorite work of Tolkien hoewever I must say that I'm somewhat pro Feanor even though he makes huge mistakes. He's trying to clean up after that jerk Manwe's and the other Valar's mess after all.

Thank you very much! Yes, what you say about Fëanor is true, and he is definitely a fascinating character. He's obviously a genius who doesn't want people to mess around with his work, but he also makes the huge mistake of letting his pride get the best of him. And it's amazing how even though he isn't around for very long (I mean - he's killed almost immediately after he gets to Middle-earth), his actions cause a domino effect for the entire plot! I think he's a good example of how even the smartest person in the room can have major flaws that will only get worse if he fails to reflect on them with a decent amount of humility.

@@lfwinesroad3399 I agree and don't get me wrong, he is guilty of the oath, of the kinslaying, the burning of the ships and leaving all those who chose to follow him to cross the grinding ice, but at least he's trying to do something about Morgoth who should have been the Valar's responsibility. In my opinion it's the Valar who should ask the people of Middle Earth for forgiveness because they failed them. Great tragedy material, hopefully we'll get some chapters as a TV show and/or movies someday.

@@sforskatas Both you have good and valid arguments but what i think is that the Valar didn't understand evil just as only Melkor knew fear. As the Valar didn't understand evil they couldn't act on preventions alone. After the events of darkening Valinor, Tulkas tried to capture Melkor but he fled already together with Ungoliant to Middle Earth...

Even though I adore Tolkien's mythology, I've always been disturbed by how little a role Tuor and Turin played in their respective journeys. A sense of sadness pervades me when I ponder how weak their wills were when compared to the wills of Melkor and Ulmo. For the tragedy of Turin is well wrought by the malice of Morgoth and the bravery of Tuor by the powers of Ulmo. What can we do when Gods decide our fate?
