EPIRB for anyone who doesn't know- Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon. It has a hydrostatic release gear that gets activated when the boat/ship reaches a certain depth in the water. The gear comes loose and the EPIRB floats to the top and starts broadcasting signals that contains a unique identification number of that particular vessel

I assumed it was some kind of signal but thanks for the explanation. It helped me to understand that a person didn’t actually send a mayday signal. It kind of seems like somehow the boat went down really fast and the people didn’t have time to send a mayday signal.

@@caseyj779 yeah. It most likely was a giant rogue wave which hit them on the side and capsized the boat. A Mayday signal is sent with the push of a single button on the VHF radio. It must have been a violent impact and even a veteran captain couldn't get the mayday out.

Sorry for your loss. Prayer covering for these men is important imo. I come from a long line of fishermen. My great-great-great-grandfather Collins was almost lost when his ship went down off Newfoundland, he managed to get into a dory and row himself and a few survivors to shore. It was considered a feat of strength. Unfortunately, it tore his body apart and he died within 2 years. The men who go down to the sea in ships.

@@e.s.5529 i just read the coast guards press release which was that they went out overloaded in freezing spray with ice build up and the crew was fatigued. They also believe a hatch was left open stating that would cause the ship to sink within minutes. The families seem to think captain and crew were pressured by the owner to leave the dock early unprepared and wanted criminal charges brought up which was never done. This is just what I read in a news report after googling it so take that for what you will.

I had one of the least physical jobs out there, more mental work and ATC radio work. I was chilled every time Coast Guard called up as "Coast Guard Rescue ####." Even the air taxi pilots kept eyes and ears out for fellow pilots and ship crews. A few air taxi planes have marine radios by choice of the owners, in case they need to assist in a search. There's lots of dangerous jobs and the Coast Guard is standing by for any help they can give.

What i wanna know is what happened? They were that close to land and something happens so fast that they couldn't even get off a mayday. Rogue wave maybe? Thats a scary thought.

They were improperly loaded, the crew was fatigued, and the captain set forth into freezing spray despite knowing these things. A hatch was left open, and the crew was so fatigued that they couldn't keep up with ice buildup. It capsized quickly. The captain was unfortunately complicit a string of missteps.

I was in the Civil Air Patrol back in the late 6os to mid 70's. Aircraft and ships share ine common denominator: foul weather can bring down the most sophisticated aircraft even with sophisticated flight systems and sadly tour boats, fishing vessels, and ocean liners aren't immune. RIP Deadliest Catch shipmates list at sea.

"The report claims that unsafe stability conditions resulting from the carriage of heavier crab pots that exceeded the weight used in the stability instructions, additional weight and stability stress from bait loaded high on the vessel, excessive ice accumulations from freezing spray, and downflooding from the open No. 3 hold access hatch were the primary factors that led to the capsizing of the boat." "The loss of the Destination with six persons aboard was a tragic and preventable accident,"

Unfortunately they were on their way up to the area, so equipment was stacked and the crew were most likely below deck and not working on deck so wouldn't have been in survival gear. The investigation showed the calculations used for stability were incorrect because of a recent refit, the vessel capsized when it had to much ice on the upper deck and at that point there was no hope of getting out and likely was gone in a very short space of time. It was found a couple months later at the bottom.
