This isn't even the first friend he's lost. Phil, the Scandies Rose, the Destination. And those are just the ones I know of. There are probably others that got lost that we didn't see or hear about. This guy has lost a lot of people who left before their time. Alaskan fishers are no stranger to death. Alaskan captains are no stranger to death, and have to fight it off for the sake of their crew. And an older captain is certainly well acquainted with death, staring it right in the eye, and seeing what happens to those who make a mistake at the exact wrong time.

Tragedy aside, the shot where we see Edgar, then cuts to the angle where he’s looking out at the rough seas they’re in, literally, and figuratively. The wind is swirling & howling all around them. It really captures the emotions they’re experiencing, having just had one of their extended fishing family members get swallowed up by the sea. A reminder of just how dangerous that job can be.

I spent 25 years working on commercial/charter fishing boats as a mate. I ALWAYS did wheel watch myself after waking up one time and finding another mate asleep at the wheel. I never slept on a wheel watch. Plus I was trained to go down and check the engine room every other hour. That training paid off more than once. On the ocean you can have life vests...a lifeboat..an EPIRB...etc..but once your boat goes down and all that is around you is 100 miles of open ocean......Yeah.....

In high school we had many fishing fleets that left our town for SE Alaska. One of the boats in 1990-91 ish took too many nets and the captain knew it he was risking it because they didn't complete all the work at the dock before departure. When your CG is high as a captain you must make sure your maneuvering doesn't get too wonky. They were trying to make up time and entered the Campbell River transition at the wrong time and the boat capsized and sunk in about 30 seconds. My buddy was asleep in his bunk 3 decks from the water's surface. He probably didn't have 30 seconds to even figure out what was happening before he was gone.

The worst part is that the FV Destination was completely preventable. They put a new bulbous bow on and were carrying heavier crab pots, installed by the boat owner, but the owner failed to have the stability rating of the ship re-evaluated. That boat owner killed his crew and sunk the FV Destination. It's all in the Coast Guard report on the incident. Absolutely tragic.

I can’t imagine being is this situation. We watch this show for entertainment, but some of it is really REAL. I’m sure it’s similar to firefighters who watch coworkers going into a fire and not coming out. It’s amazing to think these guys risk there lives so that someone can enjoy an expensive meal, with no rush at all. Bless those who didn’t survive ❤ 🙏

Lost my Father to the sea while doing his job. Left a wife with a 4 year old (me) and a baby. My heart goes out to all families that have lost loved ones just earning a living ❤

Crab fishing is a tuff job for everyone. Then add in losing a friend or friends. The events definetly age those brave men. God bless them all.
