No Return: The final voyage of the crab boat Destination
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
The Destination took a lot from Dylan Hatfield when it sank in the Bering Sea two years ago - his brother, his best friend, and his mentor. "Everything has changed. It's a whole different job now," he says.

I lost my 19 year old grandson 11 years ago, 6/19/2011. It was Father’s Day. Same date as this years Father’s Day. He was just having fun jumping off a rock into river. Fell hit his head and got knocked out and rolled to water. Took 24 to 30 hours to find him. I guess me telling this is my therapy. He’s truly missed. My heart goes out to all the lost fishermen’s families. Prayers for all the people working on the seas. 💕

Had a good family friend, Jeff, husband of my mother’s best friend die from falling into an icy pond. I was watching the news coverage about a man falling into the pond with my mother and them searching for the body. My mother noticed and commented that the pond was in her friend’s neighborhood. Then the phone rang. I only heard anguished cries on the other end as my mother tried to ask who it was and what was wrong. It was her best friend, Jeff’s wife. My mother’s animalistic wails still ring in my ears all these years later when she fell to the floor and screamed in agony, “It’s Jeff!” My father drove to the neighborhood to be with Jeff’s grieving wife while she waited for the divers to fish out the love of her life while I stayed to try and comfort my mother who had just lost one of her lifelong friends. But I was hurting myself. Jeff was a light in this dark world and like an uncle to me. He is dearly missed. But in an odd way, we all have this feeling he’s setting the table for us on the other side and we’ll see him again one day, greeting us with the big smile and laugh that we all miss. Sorry for hijacking your post, it just brought it all back to me.

Kai's dad was a very good friend of mine. Amazing man. He was dealt a devastating blow by this loss. He became very depressed and distraught after it happened and he passed away at the beginning of Covid. What a tragedy this was.

Kai was one of my best friends. We had a very large group of friends and when he passed it crushed many of us. We miss you brother. Take care of Joe. Till we meet again
I stopped watching Deadliest Catch because it used to make me so sad when someone would pass. I always kept "the crab fishermen" on my prayer list though. And I still pray for their safety.
I worked on the Destination, Larry O and I used to talk for hours about sport boats. Jeff was quite a character Cape Cheerful and Karen Lynn days not a day goes by that I can ever not see their faces and hear their stories.
I don't think until this show first aired just how many people were not aware of how dangerous life on a Fishing boat is. Sure there's the good times but when it turns into the bad times, most times they never return. As a Navy Vet myself I salute all those who live upon the waves and as the saying used to go "May the wind be ever at your back, your sails full, a drink in your mug and a smoke in your mouth, a safe voyage to you my friends"

Fishing is only as dangerous as it is because of poorly maintained equipment. If they had the same standards of maintenance as airlines or other commercial enterprises the danger would drop off starkly.

deadliest catch has been on TV for years 10-15 years at least. people know, or using selective memory.
In February 1983 a childhood neighbor of mine went down in one of the two notorious 'A' boats (from Anacortes, WA) that sank about 20 miles out of Dutch Harbor. All crews were lost on both boats, my neighbor was only 20 and his name was Richard Awes. It was a real tragedy (and mystery) for my hometown. I always visit the memorial there when I visit. R.I.P. Richie and all the others.

they all lived their lives to the fullest. RIP to all the guys. Larry O was my best friend,my best man,and man did we have share some memories. Sure miss him all the time. My family misses him. Im still close to one of his sisters and she greives Larry O's passing every day.
My son lived through 3 years of crabbing and came home , so glad he lived to tell the stories , they are hairy stories and hard work
My father was a fisherman, salmon trawler, and crab. My brother was a fisherman. I worked the boats with them summers in high school. There is such a romance in the trade, the beauty of the sea, the daring of facing the cruel side of it. Like any romance, it can break your heart. I'll never forget my time on the sea. I wish you peace.

As a commercial fisherman in Alaska since 1983, I always tell people I meet that it’s the best job you will ever hate!
I grew up on fishing boats on the east coast. When you are 200 miles from port. It's blowing 50 knot winds and 25 foot seas you are surprised when you find yourself praying to God. The oceans can be calm as glass and 5 minutes later rollers surround your boat. I've loss many friends doing what they loved. Bless you sir I pray that you find peace in your life!
A lot of comments about some of the guys not being able to swim. If you've seen the show do you really think it would make a difference. Sad story
This is so very sad to me, I lost my brother tragically as well and just watching this man talking about his own brother really hits home. I always admired these fisherman, they are amazing people in my eyes. May God Bless You All 🙏

That series really showed the world what some brave people do for a living and that many shouldn't take their cushy office jobs for granted. Some of the toughest work on earth is out at sea especially the cold, rough, and unpredictable Bearing Sea.

I was in Kodiak in a bar back in the 90s ran into a big burly crazy cool crabber, told em I wanted to try crapping! Put his arm around me and said stay on land you don't want to go out there!
I just found this, Larry was my 1st cousin , we have a family reunion every summer here in WA , we all miss him so much
It's programs like this that shows you just how dangerous and how much hard work it is. Small crab boats like that in bad weather is just like a cork in a bath. The power in the seas in unbelievable, 1 square cube of water weighs a ton ,so a big wave hitting you can be game over. R.I.P to all the guys lost at sea.🙏🏴
Gives me chills man... rest in peace brothers..... never realize how eazy it is to leave......
My friend of 30 years was on another boat with the same name when this happened. Also named Destination. I went on for 2 days thinking he was gone and then we finally got word that it was a different boat. The whole thing was just surreal. A rollercoaster of emotions. Incredible personal sadness and loss switching to incredulous relief and then feeling survivor’s guilt “once removed.” -Just knowing exactly how all of the loved ones of the men lost were STILL feeling and will feel for the rest of their lives. D E S T I N A T I O N C R E W Rest In Peace 💝
My condolences to the families. They say a prayer over the air at the start of the season. I crab fished two seasons of crab Kings and Opilio. Loved working at the pot yard with a couple of buddies. Fished in some really rough seas, but we filled our boat. We were using big pots. I can't help but think ice had built up due to the time they went down. But who knows. Could have been a huge wave. But their normally blasted by tanks. Anyway god bless these fishermen. I pray for them. RIP Nick Mcglashin. I watched him grow up. As his father was my captain.

I just happened to come across your video. I’m very sorry for the loss of all those close to you. I don’t know many peoples stories of ones who lost their lives at sea. The first thing I thought of was those who died from the Massachusetts area “ the perfect storm”. May God bless you and those who aren’t with you any longer. I am sure they are looking down at you and proud of what you’re doing. Keep strong and keep the faith.
What a great tribute to your brave brother, friend, and crew of the Destination.
Very touching and hard hitting! A reminder on how close to the edge we are and were as crabbers.
We really need to THANK these brave Men and Women who do this work so we can eat and enjoy the Sea Food they catch for Us !! Rest on The Waves of Gods Love ! May they All Rest in Peace and May Perpetual Light Shine Upon Them . Amen 🙏🌹🙏
Coin flip every trip, out and back with mother nature deciding whether you do or not. It's a killer life and unfortunately unforgiving with great rewards but at greater losses. Much Respects to all those, that do what you do!! ✌🏼
one of my friends one day mentioned she wondered about her grand parents life...what growing up was like but she had no one to ask because they & her parents all died when she was a teen. it struck me, so i asked my grandmother & grandfather about their lives growing up & such. i write it all down when we visit, some funny, some sad , some mundane stories but all interesting, at least to me. i hope it will serve as a family diary for our family & future generations. i would tell the surviving brother to write down his fond memories of his brother so he will be remembered well & it will give him some comfort i believe.
My cousin Pat Devine passed with his crew aboard the "Arcadia" in June, 1983 off the North Coast of Scotland. I was 2half weeks old when it happened. Luckily they did recover the bodies, so they could atleast lay them to rest and get a measure of closure, but even now, nearly 39yrs later, my family mourn the passing still. Noone is dead, aslong as u r safe in someone's heart.

God bless all of you men and woman. Who do what you do to support your family, yourselfs, and other important things. Love to just enjoyi a full day out in the ocean. Although I'm very safety prepared and conscious. The ocean can turn, and take away what it wants. Just God bless everyone, always stay as safe as possible. 🙏 🤲 🎣 🚤

Six crew members died when the crab boat disappeared on a Saturday morning in February 2017, near St. George Island. A Coast Guard investigation of the Destination concluded that overloading of crab pots and heavy icing at sea played a large role in the boat sinking. An investigation by The Seattle Times found the owner of the Destination failed to follow through on a recommendation to have an updated stability test conducted by a naval architect. An analysis later found that the sea bottom weighed 840 pounds, which failed to meet federal stability regulations due to a large load.

The bond between brothers and sisters is one of a kind. There's nothing that comes close . The love you have for your parents is a special love as well but doesn't hold a flame in comparison. There are things we shared with our brothers or sisters that would never be spoken about to our parents. The special moments we shared growing up together can't ever be forgotten. Yes my friend, I can honestly say I share your pain, and understand exactly what your speaking of.. I've lost two of my older brothers and both my parents so far. Just my youngest brother and I left. It really cuts deep some days .. Especially the holidays.. Reason being!! We still live on the same property, and in the same home we were born in. Not a day goes by that I don't remember , or I'm reminded of the great times, and numerous laughs we shared.. This planet is a beautiful and spectacular place to experience. But Boy Howdy !! It is a cruel and heartbreaking place as well.. I've learned a little philosophy that helps me laugh and stay on the more brighter side of life rather than being pulled down into the losses and sadness .. . For those things in life that don't kill us, they just require a brief amount of hospitalization.. 😇😅😅😅😅 It helps a lot to laugh. God be with all of our friends and family that have been taken by the Sea.. I wish all that make a living at sea the best of God's prayers and protection on each and every voyage. 🙏🙏🙏🙏
I have done the crap fishing in Alaska. 6 weeks of a four month contract. Never will I do that again. I put in 28 years in the maritime Industry. Crab fishing is completely a different word. CWA
I hope all who have perished at sea fishing for the seafood we love to eat are in that sea in heaven doing what they love. I never knew how dangerous it was to be a fisherman. I love seafood and I thank you fisherman and may you be safe until you retire from doing what you love 🙏🏽
My heart goes out to you man. May peace come in time.

I was born and raised in Petersburg. I've lost too many friends over the years between small planes and fishing vessels. Many friends are still fisherpersons. My heart broke when I heard of this tragedy .

Although beautiful, the sea is a cruel & unforgiving mistress. I've lost family & friends out there. Some found, some not & some barely found. Altbough they made their last trip, their hearts & souls are still out there among the waves...
I started watching the first season. Then when season two started with the loss of the Big Valley (?), I couldn't watch for awhile. Watched the Harris Boys come up. Cig & Edmond. Can't recall the other captins. It does get to be like family.
Very moving. Marvelous film. 💛🙏🏼

You don’t need to consume crab, it’s a choice, just like it’s a choice to earn a living off of it. You could very easily eat many other things that don’t come with this hazard potential.
Many thanks for your bravery. I am sorry for your loss. The dedication and risk are insurmountable.
Dylan, I know that this is been a bit since the F/V DESTINATION, sank...and you lost your brother and your good friend and your mentor and all of the good men aboard the vessel... I know in my heart and soul that your brother is most definitely very proud of you for what you have accomplished!! ❤ This is a very beautiful tribute to your brother and the crew of the DESTINATION...!! 🙏❤❤❤⚓ I remember this episode and my heart sank when I realized what happened... I saw an episode on NatGeo that explained what they believed happened to the DESTINATION. It sounded like overloading of the gear and over icing played a big part in the sinking...😞⚓❤🙏 I believe that when it happened it was quick and no one suffered... It's never easy losing a loved one.. especially when they are young and they have so much more to do with their lives and then something like this happens.... The unknown and then to not be able to recover the remains...they are at peace having returned to the sea....which we all come from and at death we return to... God Bless Your Brother and Friend and Mentor and Everyone Else Aboard the DESTINATION...!! 🙏❤⚓
Life on the sea is difficult for family. Guys on the sea are a different 'type' of person. We love them and miss them.
It doesnt need a perfect storm...i think about these guy often. It is a very dangerous job and we including I, we take for granted, i do regret it. Period. We will never know what happened, if it doesn't matter that this point. They will be miss, they are appreciated, finally, they be honored
I used to work on the boat for 2yrs definitely miss it and sorry to hear about your lost may the lord heal and guide you. N may he Rest In Peace and watch over you till you meet again in heaven
You never forget your time at sea... from middle school through highschool and a few years after dragging the Atlantic was tons of fun, scary but man being with family and close friends FV Excalibur !! Was the main focus on most of the things I wrote in school from the insane fishing quotas to the bull regulations...
This is a great thing you done sir God-bless you From liberty Indiana USA

Man the ocean can be an unforgiving place. It’s one of my biggest fears. Not only the animals that live there but being underwater and not able to breathe. Fuck that. My heart goes out to all these guys.
Reminded me of my brother and my relationship before i lost him from a unknown. May you come to peace knowing we will see them again. Wish you would get your boat because i would follow someone like you man.

This was a rough watch for me I grew up with this show and my old man alongside me. Now its just me and I try to avoid it because of memories but the sinking of the destination was a moment for the both of us and all of you watching so i couldnt scroll by.
Fisherman lost at sea, have merely found their way to a forever home. They return to the water from whence we all came, and the water that all fisherman obsess over. Rest forever among your friends and your quarry.
Well maintained vessel. Knowledge of the channels..seas..etc..but there is a big difference..between crabbing there and the Atlantic..I could not ever deal with that ..I have been lost at sea twice though. Lol lolblol lol..warm. Atlantic...lol lol Eek
Life is seconds and inches...a pro captain and crew...doesn't matter...life is seconds and inches. I grew up and live on Lake Superior. I assure you...there is no mercy. Peace
I spent 20+ years in Poulsbo/ Bremerton Wa area working at Navshpyrd and retired. I miss the fresh seafood. There nothing like the fresh fish on the coastal areas, but never knew the dangers that they go though to get it. My condolences to all families. My husband used to go with a friend that was a halibut fisherman and come home with the best fish. Nowhere near this dangerous whatsoever.

Was this guy on board? I understood there were no survivors.
As a kid the songs Downeaster Alexa by Billy Joel and the Edmund Fitzgerald by Gordon Lightfoot just put me right in it with those brave men and their ships. These guys bring those stories to life for me. RIP to all those souls lost.
I risked my life many times on so roofing jobs I was on. Sometimes an unpredictable storm came in within a half hour, and one day we had this flat commercial roof wide open, down to the steel trusses, a complete steel deck replacement. We had about 2000sf wide open to the business below. Everything was expensive commercial lighting supplies that were ready to ship out to customers. In a complete blackout, downpour, we threw loose steel, 25' deck sheets down, then threw .060 EPDM (rubber roofing) over the top, finally using whatever to weigh it down best we could. Below, factory worker were using fork lifts to move expensive, new products, out of the area. At anytime, while we were on this roof, during our efforts, during the storm, we had ample chances to fall, as none of us were wearing safety harnesses. I'd guess it was about 45-50 feet below. Thank the good Lord, no one even got hurt. However, damage's incurred we're about $180,000 we were told. The storm happened around lunchtime (12pm) We didn't get out of the place until about 8:45pm that night. We hung around to help with water clean up. I do know hard, dangerous, work. This stuff here, I'm man enough to admit to anyone, this is in a different universe! If I'm blessed enough, to have a current, crew boat member, or anyone that worked in this line of work, I salute you, and take my hat off out of respect to you all! God bless you. Peace.
Motrin icyhot and naps, factory work on a boat surrounded with beauty, I'm deeply sorry for your loss brother 😔
We all feel we know them and it saddens me to the core. Can't imagine how it has affected the families. God be with you all and the ones that are no longer here.
