The most important part of a SHTF AR is that you buy the parts and put one together yourself. Buying one pre-built ensures that if the trigger ever gets screwed up... you will not know how to fix it. Learn how your AR is put together... and have spare parts on hand.

  • @beardly0121

Most of the parts on an AR will literally never require replacement like the detents and stuff. Putting it together yourself just introduces the risk of tolerance stacking which is a major reason why home brew rifles are not as reliable as factory made guns.

@@beardly0121 Ok whatever... this is SHTF we are discussing. Which means there are no gunsmiths around to fix your AR if something goes wrong. Which may or may not ever happen. But my homebuilt is flawless. I go through the same process to build it as a factory produced AR does. The only difference is I gain some knowledge about how all the various parts and springs work.

@@rudder727 dude it's dead simple to put an AR together. It's not hard at all. It's just annoying more than anything else. Shtf like you're describing where all available data disappears into thin air is literally never going to happen but have fun preparing for the fantasy you have created for yourself. It's far more practical to prepare based on statistical realities like natural disasters or rioting than it is a complete societal collapse which has never happened in a manner that results in some sort of dark age with the sole exception being the literal dark ages which was a completely different era in human progress.

This is the way, I bought a pre build AR replaced parts by myself most parts that I could with minimal tools. Gas rings, extractor ejector switching trigger etc. I have a extra bolt carrier on hand.

The advice I was given by people who lived war and loved SHTF is to buy a factory built gun and then buy a second and clone the first. Unless I am an armorer or the armoror for a group, no reason I should be building guns and introducing unseen problems. If I am with a group, someone will be the armoror and they fix the guns. If I'm by myself, I have a main squeeze and a backup/clone to go with if the first dies. And I use the clone until I can find someone to fix the first. But you do you boo.

The sheer number alone will prevent them from enacting any laws to restrict them further, just look at how many states and companies are fighting the recent pistol brace ruling. Another thing I think most of us overlook is physical fitness. Most likely you’re gonna have to pack a ruck and move long distance on foot. Its one thing to know how to fight with a weapon system but if you have no stamina you’re gonna end up dead. The reason the military harps so much on physical fitness. Physical fitness also improves mental toughness. Gotta get into the fighting mindset

In addition, ready your rifles for heavy firing by changing out your stainless oem gas tube for Melonite treated gas tubes and SpringCo buffer springs as they’re extremely durable and last much longer than standard oem springs. Even if it did come most people would die relatively quickly. Most civilians don’t train in anything other than shooting at paper and steel. Most people are also oblivious on how to perform small unit tactics in urban and jungle environments, moving under fire, basic survival, and TCCC. By all means, use the SHTF excuse as a way to convince your wives to buy more guns. But, let’s be honest most people that decide to fight would die in the first week. I have 3 in 556/223 1 10.5 inch 1 16 inch and 1 20 inch all 1/8 twist with 55 grain to 62 grain ammo. But I also have several in different calibers, 300 black out 6.5 grendel and 7.62x39. I have ammo for all and train with each caliber and each different barrel length uppers I have for each caliber. All have etched radicals, whether dot sights, LVPO, or scopes. Each caliber has another separate Bolt.

Good points. I like optics on my AR, but from my experience, anything that's budget, it typically doesn't do well when it gets impacted, usually the zero shifts 1-3 moa, this includes many LPVO's and prism optics, red dots are usually built like tanks. For shtf, I think it's a good idea to research and invest in something that fits your needs.

Great Video! My only two cents. If you only have the budget for one rifle I recommend going with a 16" in a "recce" style setup. LPVO, MLok rail, Weapon light, and sling. I was able to build one for around $1,000. Not saying I would trust my life to a $1,000 rifle build but you can still use it to get to better gear. I would recommend starting with a $1,000 build then upgrading it as you get the money. At least you will have a rifle to sling lead with.

LMT makes the iron sight combo that replicates the A2. It is important with irons to have the longest sight radius you can. I recommend the longest rail you can get. The rail also needs to be of premium quality so it does not shift if dropped etc. The red dot or Holo dot over irons is what i prefer these days from my area. It is key to practice out to 300 yards + often with just the sights. The concepts are reversed when you switch from one to another. As one would soon find out in practice.

I have to agree with everything you said. Can’t quite go wrong with any rifle and rifle caliber out there as long as you’re proficient in it and have more than enough ammo to hold out and defend wherever you plan to stay. I’d say the absolute worst case scenario (realistically) that’s likely to happen would either be another country invading, a civil war, government collapse, or if you’ve ever seen the Purge movies then you know shit’s gonna get real lol For me, my battle rifle is an AKM in 7.62x39. I always have it ready to go with a round in the chamber just sitting in my closet. I’ve also racked over 2000 rounds just sitting in 2 big ass ammo cans with 14 fully loaded mags lol And with 7 years of military experience, I’m very proficient with combat shooting and being out of my comfort zone. I will also say. Make sure you know how to completely disassemble your rifle. Learn to do it without looking at it. That way in the event of a failure or if your rifle gets way too dirty to operate, or if you have to swap out a part for whatever reason, you know how to take it apart and put it back together to get back in the fight. Keep training, have a plan A and plan B, and stay focused people🤙🏼

Today, at my range, I was shooting my Winchester Model 94 30-30 both at a rest and offhand at 55 yards. People nearing 80 don't see that well at over 100 yards. Not that I think I would leave my home area, but I thought which might be best to take--my 30-30, open sights ,or my 5.56, with a scope. Probably depends on where I live. A 5.56 is great for long range but only if one can see a long way. If I lived in a city or rural area with few trees and flat land, AR is the best, but if in thick brush what would be the best? A good share of off beat areas north of Boise, Idaho is thick and brushy and a 30 caliber bullet isn't as likely to deflect off limbs. I have no sling on the '94 and a Viking tactical 3-point sling on the AR but the AR is hard to take through brush. I've tried both and the '94 is easier. And the '94 is much deadlier tan the 5.56. Whis is best for me?

@@NavySooner Unless you live where not far from me, brush is so thick that it is a chore to walk in. The Viking Tactical sling for the AR helps because I can put the gun on my back or front. If I lived in town or on the flats I would definitely use an AR. I don't plan on bugging out anyplace. The only place I could go if I were younger is east toward the Montana border but the terrain is so rough that helicopter logging is used. And if I go very far I need to be on the watch for cougars, wolves, moose, black bear, and if I go to certain areas, grizzlies. A .223 is a bit light for such encounters.

I got the Magpul mbu's pro metal sights. They do good in my opinion been plenty accurate out to couple hundred yards probably could do better if my eyes weren't so damned messed up. They're pretty low profile to so and then I'll snag on a lot of stuff. Primary arms make some pretty good prism optics four decent prices. I tell you one thing those little Romeo fives those little dudes are tough I watch the guy shoot one from the side at 7 yards with a number 7 shot out of the 12 gauge and the little bugger still worked and held 0. I think it was Alabama arsenal I watch them do that on. Was pretty impressed for the price that thing.
