Indeed. A time when top gear was informative and about cars before it became a comedy vehicle for three clowns. Yes, a good review, well paced and informative. Having owned many Jaguars and a four of Daimlers, I too appreciate these cars, so much better than the competition.

I have a 2004 XJ-8 that I bought 4 years ago. It now has 97,451 miles. Far and away it is the best auto I’ve ever owned. It looks new inside and out. People are surprised when I tell them the age. . I’ve owned MB, BMW, Audi and others and the reliability is as good as any and better than most. The bottom line is I don’t want anything else.

Just read your pleasing review. I bought a 2004 XJ8 (X350) in British Racing Green a couple of weeks ago. The 4.2 V8 runs sweet as a nut at just 74,000 miles on it. Good positive gearbox. 300BHP = Terrifying kick-down! I cruise at 35 mostly, not bothered about economy, it's in the low 20s somewhere. Grace Space and Pace is what a Jag is all about. Happy motoring, I hope you still have yours!

I had a 2004 xj for four years. Everything you said about it was true. I loved it. Drove is most of the way across the USA and home to California. (No corrosion there.) I had the 4.2 V8. Excellent acceleration. I took it to a few track days at Willow Springs Raceway. Hit 120 on a downhill section. Handling and brakes were excellent. I finally sold it after having to spend $2000 dollars simply because the local mechanics do not understand Jaguars and misdiagnosed repeatedly when I had electrical problems. Finally found a specialist 20 miles from home who knew exactly what to do. Over the four years I spent about $7,000 in repairs, mainly on replacing worn out parts. I drove it 60,000 miles, or about 100,000 kilometers. Just sitting in the car was a feast of beauty. BTW, the Jaguar enthusiast websites were very helpful.

Just bought a 2003 XJ6 3.0 Sport as shown in this video, although in silver. To say that I am impressed would be an understatement. It is everything stated in this video and so much more. I part-exchanged my 2002 735i BMW for it, and even though I thought the 735i was the best drive ever, I was wrong. The XJ just has that edge that the BMW was missing. Great video, top review. I had one to drive at Millbrook back around 2002 to fill some time waiting for another car to come back in. It was my favourite car of the day, and that is against CTR and 265bhp WRX among others. The thing that struck me most was how relaxed it was at 70+ around the bowl there, you really could have just driven around until the fuel ran out and not felt at all tired. A truly fantastic car, and a feeling that I knew at the time would stay with me for a long while. I remember the drive in the WRX for another reason.... and it didn't involve crashing it :-) Great videos, nice relaxed and honest delivery.

Thank you, really interesting. As a student in 1970/1, I hitch-hiked everywhere. One lift I received was on the road East to West, cross country from Scotch Corner on the A1 to the M6. The car was an almost new XJ6 4.2, driven fast. I was absolutely thrilled. 9 years later I bought a 10 year old XJ6 4.2, just like that one, in Regency Red. I remember picking it up in London, and driving in evening darkness along the M4 to Reading, only doing about 50mph, luxuriating in the glow of all those instrument lights, the leather, the auto, the purr of the big six. In retrospect, listening to your video, I also never felt I was driving a large car, and I always felt relaxed in it, fast or slow. Thanks again for this video.

The X350 is one of the best cars I've owned. It's a 2007. Before that I had a 1999 X308 Vanden Plas, and before that a 1990 AJ40 Soverign. The X350 is the one to get. Incredibly solid, reliable and fun to drive. The X308 4.0L was Jaguar's first V8. Lots of problems and I wouldn't recommend one. The 6 cylinder AJ40 was a great car too but try and avoid the hydraulic suspension models. The rectangular head lights were a little different too. I test drove one of the new XJ's and was very disappointed. It didn't look or feel like a Jag inside or out. I ended up at the Lexus dealer and replaced my X350 with an LS460. It's the closest thing I could find with the quality and feel of the X350. I think Jag has lost the formula with the new XJ. Evidently they haven't been doing well in the market place either since they're going to discontinue the XJ. It's also rumored that Peugeot might buy the company from Tata. That's not good news for the future.

I recently did a 1000 mile round trip holding a steady 85 up to Scotland and back which returned a heart stopping 24.7 mpg, but that was with moderately aggressive driving and 4 people in the car. Mine is the same colour as the one in the video, but I changed the grill to one from the"Super" with chrome surround and mesh which looks much better. Yes Sell the 2010 New shape for bulk fleet sales, but they should have kept the XJ shape available . when the X300 first launched they sold tons of them, they were everywhere. My dad had a 1994 x300 new & a 1996 x300 sport new right up until he died. If he was alive he would still have it now. The Looks are Fantastic on the XJ's. I will tell you a little secret here, The option was a BMW e34 525, or an X300 3.2 Sport. ( similar price New ) My dad opted for the JAG. I went the other way & i run a BMW e34 525i SE Manual, A Stunningly Superb car. and yes i drove 30,000 of the 50,000 miles on the Jag. from the day we collected it. aug 1st 1996 from Appleyard Jaguar Harrogate. X300 too big . 23 mpg on the dash comp. Both of us gave it the HEAVY RIGHT WELLIE BOOT ! The E34 , Better handling, Just as smooth engine, Similar / Better performance in the BMW as you can USE every bit of power & being manual select the gear in advance of the Road ahead Long before the Autobox has thought about it , then eventually delivered the wrong gear , As ALL Autobox's do. They are changing UP, just when the driver is thinking i need to go down 1 maybe 2 gears for this Bend / junction / road situation , or next overtake. Auto is OK for OLD FOLK. or Those who can't drive etc. Overall the E34 BMW is the Far Better Car. 2.5's are 6 inline very reliable, comfort Leather Seats Beats the Short squab Jag seats for ALL DAY Comfort. Or 20 mins of comfort. I had the New X300 , my father passed away, i had the car & Went for the e34. VERY Glad i did . But i do LOVE the JAG shape. & I do not dislike the JAG , Yes i would have another. Because they LOOK THREE TIMES THE MONEY of an e34 parked in the driveway. The BM' wins when you FLOOR THE PEDAL ON QUIET COUNTRY LANES !! SMILE EVERY MILE ! e34 525's are HELL FIRE AWESOME CARS when you concentrate & Wellie the daylights out of them WOW !! DO as they were Designed to do !! And they will impress you all the way BEYOND the RED LINE in 5th . Handling & cornering = SUPERB ! Most drivers will only ever have experienced 50% of the AWESOME POTENTIAL of their 525. The Power only arrives at over 3500 rpm. & better at over 4000 rpm upto the 6500 rpm limiter. Keep it in the 3500 - 6000 rpm range & HELL FIRE will that car FLY !! Yes the wheels can & do Leave the ground as you TAKE OFF over HUMPS in the road. as rally cars do . with a Perfect smooth landing. BUY a GOOD ONE & Book a slot on a test track or Racing circuit to discover the real e34.

Another great video! I can’t name anybody on either side of the Atlantic who doesn’t love a good Jag. There’s just so much personality to them; even the old ones. This one was always one of my favorites, however. It’s amazing to see what the company has become in spite of some relatively dreary sales numbers. They just keep making great cars.

Hi @ my name is Morgan and I hate old jags! ; I love how they sound! They are beautiful cars! But they really are terrible cars! I would never buy one or recomend one to a friend! I'm seeing a lot of stary eyed nostalgia streaming in from all the wingbacks out in jolly old wherever and I just want to let any young folks out there thinking about buying a jag that all these stories of years of trouble free use are just not true! That's all folks! You tweedy lot can stuff your jags! Ppppppppppphhhhhhhht*^.^ and *lets talk about jag license plate bolts. Course thread...nope ok machine screw then nope, it's a special screw somewhere in the middle . Sometimes I think it's a British royal standard or whatever they called it.

I had a V8 X350 Sovereign which was wonderful but now have the new shape XJL which I would say overall is even better. More dramatic looking than the Germans and with much more expensive-looking materials on the inside. And 59mpg once with the 3-litre diesel which also has massive torque. As one American reviewer put it when comparing the new XJ with a 7-Series - ''if you asked someone travelling in the 7-Series what it was they would say - it's a big 3-Series''.

Reliability on that generation diesel is a concern, I was in the market for one and have seen quite a few examples for sale with the whole engine replaced, apparently due to cooling issues. Living in Spain, that is too high a risk, unless there was some upgrade to permanently solve the issue, which I don't know of. So far looking for an E38 740d (biturbo V8!) but very few on the market and less in good condition.

I once bought a used, 10 year old 1996 XJR. Before I bought it, I had it checked out by a mechanic who gave it a thumbs up. Well...The first year was great. The second year was OK, but stuff started to go wrong. By the third year of ownership, I was dumping approx. $1000 a month into it just to keep it going. After a few months of that I pulled the plug, but found it was not an easy car to sell. A year later I finally end up selling it for a fraction of what it cost me. This video talks about how a 15 year old luxury car is going to cost you more to maintain than a Yaris, or something to that effect. That's got to be the understatement of the year! My mid-70's Aston Martin has been far more reliable than the Jag, and (believe it or not), costs way less to maintain.

I'm a 60 yr old living in Spain (so probably not your average profile subscriber lol) driving an s type diesel jaguar. I love them. Stylish, comfortable and still a head turner . I drive it to France regularly which takes 2 days and don't feel tired at all. Thanks for your contribution. Keep em coming and good luck for the future. Regards Colin

Thanks for your comments! I used to live in Spain. Where abouts are you based?

Lived on Costa Del Sol for 8 years but now on the Costa Blanca for last 3 years. The sun never disappoints which is why I love it haha. Regards Colin

Jaguar expensive to maintain? I drive an old S-type, and never have problems, it's very reliable. 👍

Exactly! I've never had any issues either, but there are lots of people who think they're expensive and unreliable

My S-Type 4.2 V8 now has 140,000 miles on it - just passed an MoT with no advisories. It has never failed an MoT. The radiator popped a month or so ago and it was a royal pain in the arse to replace but I suppose you can expect radiator failures on cars as old as mine. Hope to keep it for some time yet.

Reading these comments from other Jag owners, they're generally a happy bunch. More reliable cars than most people think

@@HighPeakAutos True, I know the old XJS (V12) had a bad reputation, lots of expensive repairs. I think this had a negative impact on Jaguar in general.

@@HighPeakAutos And I have no rattles or squeaks or clunks. I've generally driven 3.0V6 Toyota Camrys prior to buying the Jag (14 yrs in two Toyotas) but they both started failing MoT's and rattling and clunking before either reached anywhere near 140k miles. I still prefer my bikes, though, but I've driven the Jag far more than I would have the Toyotas - it's just such a good thing to drive that I look for excuses to drive rather than ride. It used to be the other way round...

Like you, I don't give a damn about the "reliability" comments from those who've never owned Jaguars. My 1988 XJ6 (XJ40) was supposed to be terrible, it wasn't it was extremely reliable. The only mechanical failures in 30 years were an alternator and fuel pump vapor lock in extreme heat and a fuel pump replacement. My 1995 XJS 6.0 had rack bushings, an alternator, a starter, and a chaffed ignition wire. My 1995 XJ12 has only had a starter and an alternator replaced. My 2006 XJ8 L has 79K miles, runs well, is reliable but isn't the car the XJ12 is. I love Jaguars for what they are and what they aren't. BTW Sapphire Blue is THE best paint color. My 12s are that color.

Clarkecars ,I agree I’ve had 3 x 70’s 4.2’s,only one was crap,my 1st impulse buy. Xj40 had electrical problem traced by me to a footwell fuse box getting wet, then an 01 xjr, wonderful reliable car which I’ve always regretted selling,I’ve also had a 3.0 s type with no problems and lastly an 07 xk4.2 which only needed a battery to sort out the 1st signs of electrical gremlins. Chosen wisely they are absolute bargains and a pleasure to own.
