I'm a 20 year old with a £1500 1998 xj8. She is a lwb sovereign with the 4.0 v8. She has 120k miles with a FSH and two previous owners. Both the engine and gearbox had been replaced and rebuilt under warranty less than 20k miles ago before I bought it! Oh and the insurance is very cheap because it's an 'old man's car'. It is an insane amount of car for the money!

I owned a Jaguar XJ 3.6V8 for ten years. It was the best car I have ever owned, utterly reliable and simply gorgeous, in silver, with cream leather. I regret selling it enormously and keep wondering if I should sell my Audi A8 and buy another, low mileage Jag. In fact, I think I shall.....!!!

Had a 2005 XJ8 from new. Never had any problem. No issue whatsoever. Drove it 5 years and 150'000km. It was a very good car in hindsight.

I have always loved the XJ, especially the XJR, way more classy than it's German rivals, one of the best looking large cars ever made.

About a month ago, I just got an XJ8 from 2003 inspired by you. All I want to say, it’s thank you! I am absolutely in love with it, sold everything else and now it’s my daily driver.

2015 saw me buy my 1st Jag, an XJ X350 LWB Super V8. Still my 1st Jag and still thrills me 6.5 years later, every single time I drive it. Never owned a car as long and I sincerely hope it'll be with me for many more years to come.

I have a diesel one and I absolutely love it. The V6 petrol engine is probably the most reliable and easiest to fix engine fitted to these.

My dad had the 2.7TDV6 for a couple of years, it was always a pleasure to pilot and he clocked up 25k+ miles per year with ease.

@@Holdeenio mine just passed 170k miles. It his a very slight tick on one injector and I think a slight boost leak somewhere. I have driven it to southern Spain and back a couple of times. Driven as fast as I dare (so pushing it) with five people and luggage I averaged over 40mpg.

One of the best riding cars I've ever driven. For the money absolutely superb.

2005 jaguar was rated as the most reliable and best value by owners in the huge jd survey. I had to agree

Bought a 2004 3.5V8 six months ago. The feeling this car gives is priceless. It's a monument of a car. A 17 year old German car looks drab, but a Jag will look good forever. Also it's playfull and can surprise with the backend. Glorious.

I have owned a few XJ's. Best of the lot for me was a 2004 3.5L V8. What a fantastic car. Could never understand why these cars are so overlooked for their hideously unreliable German competitors. I would have another one in a heartbeat.........

I have to say a Jaguar is meant to be a relaxing driving experience when you want it to be but it also has to put a smile on your face when you put your foot down.

What a car! And for 1,500 Quid! This lucky chap has got an absolute bargain. Excellent review, James. You also highlighted an excellent point: Just because a car is smaller and has a tiny engine doesn’t necessarily mean it is cheaper to run.

I drive a X350 Super V8 since 9 years and aprox 170.000 mls without big issues. Best car a owned so far. It replaced a Audi A8 which has been the most ecpensive car to repair and maintain. The Jaaag is much better than its reputation. Great comfort and performance. Grace, space, and value for money!😊

Owned my old 2002 XK8 for 18 months now ( my first Jaaaaag !!) amazing drive and comfort and quite chuckable . It does nearly 40 mpg on a cruise. Modern Jaaaaags have lost that luxury feel that shines through on their old 'barges'

@@a.z.3214 well, it was delivered to me on purchase , over 200 miles on motorways, and the driver remarked that it was very economical! If driven carefully it is surprisingly ecomical , yes it runs on all 8 pots , just run in now on 85k

My 2005 xj6 cost £200 on 65k miles. Still going strong 5 years later. Great thing. Never gone wrong and a Porsche developed engine believe it or not!

My father in-law owned a XJ6 of this vintage. He bought it brand new and put over 100K on the clock. It was a great car. What makes a car worth the money is how it makes you feel. The XJ6 made anyone who drove it feel very special. Great review by the way.

I had a ride in a series 1 XJ6 in 1968 or 1969 when I was hitch-hiking from Edinburgh to Cambridge. I was used to Mk2 Jags, which I loved. I was very impressed, if not amazed, by how smooth the XJ6 was. One of my uncles had a Mulliner Park Ward Silver Shadow and my girlfriend's father had a mid 1960s Mercedes W112 300 SEL that I'd driven. The XJ6 beat the lot of them for comfort and smoothness.

I used to own a 2003 XJ6 X350 I got for £1800 for 2+years, I did everything with it in all weathers (heavy snow included) from commuting, road trips with friends, 3 track days at Donington Park/Santa Pod and even takeaway deliveries and it absolutely excelled at everything! Quick, excellent handling, comfortable, practical, reliable, (surprisingly) cheap to maintain, made you look rich and it even did up to 39.5mpg on a cruise! I honestly regret selling it now!

I still run a 22 year old X308 XJ8 4L, long wheel base, 20+ MPG, insurance this year was £217. I love it so much I still look back at it after its parked up and I'm walking away. That's mah boy.

My sister-in-law has a 04 very similar to that one with over 300k miles. She loves it and It's been amazingly reliable. She drives it twice a week on 700-mile round trips down the interstate, plus daily driving. In the last ten years or so she's only had regular maintenance, but it did need a new engine around 120k thanks to the previous owner.

Absolutley - I could not agree more. As a winter "beater" I bought a M/Y 2000 X308 V8 LWB in March 2020 - thought I'd keep it for a few months before getting back into a S/C Range Rover. After a few weeks I though hang on this is really really good. After some remedial work - costing far far less than 1 years depreciation on a Range Rover I have an amazing car. Yes my friends say I look like a Pub Landlord (no offence) or a 3rd Division football manager (I'm working on the comb over!) I'm still amazed at what value these cars are, how enjoyable they are to drive and the sheer joy it imparts on every trip (I do circa 8k miles a year in it) - plus its such a pretty car.

LOVE the Panama hat on the rear parcel shelf. I myself do this as a bit of joke so that when I overtake people, they know they've been Panamaaad'.

Great review James, I had the same XJ6 for 6 years. Made me feel like the chairman of the board or Lord of the manor depending on where I was. Excelent combination of waft and hustle down the B roads. They only weigh 1525 KG lighter than X type.

Grace, pace, and just enough space (because it's even more cramped than I remember most of the time)...great combo for a daily if you have one that's been kept up.

Brilliant video. Thoroughly enjoyed watching. You make these beautiful barges sound irresistible. You’re right! They are just that. I’ve been toying with the idea of buying the V8 but now you’ve gone and thrown the cats ‘pardon the pun’ with the pigeon’s. I’m old school and even at the age of 12 I loved the old school image of real burr walnut and leather and still do to this very day. Thanks again for this video and the young engineer for sharing his luxury barge.

I had one of these 6 years ago, it was one owner and had 153k miles when I bought it for £3200, I kept it for 2 years and sold it with 168k miles on it for £3500. It had full Jag history and gave no problems while I had it. It also would do around 30mpg, not much less that the diesel, which if you take into account diesel is more expensive and there is way more to go wrong then the petrol is the way to go. In fact I have been looking for another one, they are without doubt the best cheap luxobarge you can buy - parts are way cheaper than a Lexus and they are way more reliable than the germans

These cars are mutch underrated and coming classic cars these days. In Germany where I am from, the XJ and the S-Types are rare headturners and begin to grow up in price since two years.

Always makes me smile when British people are discussing "Winter" I haven't seen any difference between any season tbh :D but thumbs up for the amount of convertibles in a country with 2 truly sunny days a year. 🤣😂🤣😂 we have 2 seasons. Autumn which is wet and windy and summer which is 2pm until 4pm on the 28th June this year. That's when the convertibles and bbqs come out and in Scotland the neds/chavs go "Taps aff".

I went on a European trip in my 2012 XK 5.0 V8. It did 33 mpg on the trip.

Cannot help but think those wheels with tyres with plenty of sidewall look really good.

There’s a reason why Fiona Shaw’s character in Killing Eve has this earlier era Jaaag and 80s Merc in the driveway of her glass archi box house - it’s the last hurrah of this elegant, identifiable, classic design language before they started to raid Ford Mondeo shapes. There’s a big open goal for someone to take this brand back to its golden design era.

I am currently embracing "The Joy Of Sheds" for the winter with a knackered old mk1 focus estate, and there really is a lot to be said for driving something you don't have to worry about or even, particularly care about!

@@Dockhead don't get me wrong, I care greatly for every car I buy which I buy for the love of it, but this focus was bought out of necessity - it's nearly 20 years old, has dings, scratches and scrapes on basically every panel, the clutch is on its last legs, the rocker cover gasket leaks oil, but it had 12 months MOT on it and cost me under £1000 so as a basic winter workhorse which I can just scrap when the next before the next MOT is due, it's nice to be able to just park it anywhere and not worry about someone dinging it or someone wanting to nick or vandalise it, nice to know that if something went catastrophically wrong with it, I could just scrap it and get most of my money back. It's a very different motoring experience to any other I've had previously and strangely refreshing!

I bought one of these a couple of months ago to replace my X308 (thanks ULEZ). It's the same colour as this, and I paid the same for it that George did. It came with a noisy wheel bearing and a slightly lumpy gearbox, which was sorted by a service and reset of the adaptations. I am really falling for its charms.

A cayman on winter tyres would be a perfect winter car, don't really understand the whole 'need something to get through the winter' thing. I love driving my convertible around with the roof down all year round. One day I want a caterham on winter tyres

I’ve just bought a 2003 XJ8 4.2. I literally have no idea why I didn’t do this before, I bloody LOVE it! Amazing car, and considering I’ve come from an Alfa Giulia Veloce that’s saying something!!!

@@michaeljordan6008 these cars (x350s) are incredibly reliable, thanks to Ford. Parts are also, on the whole, cheap, again thanks to Ford. However, I also spent too money on buying a perfect one with low miles from Japan, so that helps!

I had one the same, but in silver with an LPG system. Just superb! It loved to waft along at very good speeds, on the motorway I always got 30 plus to the gallon, with the LPG on it lost a very small amount of power, but at half the cost of petrol, I was happy to put up with that loss..... the equivalent of over 60mpg in something this comfortable is almost too good to be true. Every option worked, and mine had the lot including the factory phone. I had to let it go when the main break pipe to the rear burst on the way for its MOT! they are hidden from view and not easy to replace, the one across the rear axle requires the axle to be dropped down! I will have another, yes they are that good!

These are brilliant; I ran one for several years and almost 150,000 miles, beyond consumables it needed a £300 suspension compressor which took me 2 hours to fit. I sold to an ex Aston Martin owner who was shocked by its performance and driving dynamics. As far as I know, five years later he still has it. I replaced it with an X358 XJR, which has proved just as reliable (155,000 miles rising daily).

I bought an absolute peach of a 1998 XJ8 at the beginning of the pandemic for $2000 with 43k miles. I put $3k into it to clean fuel lines, replace some rubber, bushings, etc.. The last two years the only thing that has failed is the cigarette lighter adapter. Even the phone still works, although it will only connect to a few networks in Africa. It is still an elegant ride and perfect for taking my Mum to lunch or her doctor appointments as she isn't a fan of my two-seater.

I think this generation of Jag, are the most classy. Timeless design.

James, great review, these are exceptional value and the fact that they are pretty much all aluminium eradicate the one major problem with old jags i.e. rust.

Hi Jay ! Good to have found you again!. I have a lovely XJ 8… I just drove it to England and back from Berlin to get its MOT and whilst traveling at around 90 mph for the whole journey I averaged 30 mph! We love that car!

I have had two XJ8L's. One was the X308, the other the X350. The newer (2007) aluminum car with the six speed gearbox is just wonderful. I bought it with 78,000mi. I am getting, consistently, 28-31MPG on the road doing 70-75mph. Now think about that. 4300lbs, V8, 300BHP. It is quiet, it handles decently, it has a large trunk and a full sized spare and alloy wheel exactly as the ones on the other four axles. It goes, stops, and it, quietly, "wafts" like no one's business. I will probably run it until it explodes and that will take some doing.

I've got a 2007 x358 3.0 v6 with 42k miles and it is lovely. Ive had my gearbox serviced and a couple of other few hundred quid repairs but it has otherwise been reliable. recently did a 1500 mile trip to ireland and back over a weekend and it was fantastic. Comfortable, quiet, fast and returned 30mpg average over the trip and i was driving VERY uneconomically in Ireland. It also handles extremely well for a car of its size because of the low weight and air suspension.

I recall the RWD V8 XJ (X308) I owned in the noughties being rather tail-happy on the slick roads during wintertime. On that front, it was rather reluctant to _"see me through the winter months"_ safely! In _luxury?_ No doubt! But not all that safely!

My last car was written of due to a tiny dent / scratch in the rear bumper, I bought it back for £50 and touched it up with a paint pen lol.

Top vid James. Speaking as someone who yeans for a return to the days of a classic in the garage and a shed on the drive, this piques my interest in barges immensely..

I agree with you - this is a real Jaaag. The modern stuff is just tat in comparison, even if models like the XE handle well.

The only mistake here is the patchwork shirt! That`s a lot of bang for your buck with that old Jag in all fairness.

Good lad XJR of that vintage would be in my lottery garage.

I had a 2003 XJ6 3.0 v6 SE. It was my first Jag and it was splendid. Loved driving it and I upgraded to a 2008 XJR which was awesome In everything it did. Since then I’ve not looked back. A 2013 XKR and now I’m proudly driving a 2017 F Type R The XJ still holds a massive spot in my heart. Such a superb car to drive. Belies it’s size with its agility and still retains its Jaguar comfort. Love them. Great video. Keep them coming :)

Great to see a 3Ltr reviewed, it really is a great package (I do however like using the manual override with the "J gate" it really responds well on a good driving road, (oh & it tows my caravan well too!) The Jag has been reliable & regularly returns around 34 mpg . All in all I can recommend this model of Jag, had it 10 years & love it still, my wife says that she will leave me if I ever sell it!!!

Big fan of older XJs. Had an 2000 X308 XJR for 7 years. Had to replace a few routine parts in that time, discs, pads, wheel bearings etc but overall it was a VERY reliable. Bought it with 72k miles on it for £4k and sold it 7 years later with 94k miles on it ( and a blown head gasket 😕 !) for £2800. That’s what I call cheap motoring. The 16 mpg around town was a bit of a pain on the wallet but, hey, you can’t have everything ! It had Powerflow exhausts on it so the v8 burble was to die for !

An absolutely brilliant summary Jay. I plan on viewing again next month. And the month after that.

@@georgemayson4936 Thank you! Other than a wonky fuel sender, it’s spot on. Tried changing it but the locking ring that houses the sender unit is stuck on good and proper!

Bought an 04 XJR picked up and drove it over two thousand miles home it was beautiful, powerful and turned heads. Owned it for five months until I decided I wanted something sportier. Bought an 09 xkr and love it but to be honest I miss the XJR.

@@davekennedy6315 the xjr was in great shape and the smooth 400 hp was a revelation. Such a comfortable but sporty ride but each time I got out and turned around it just didn’t seem like me. It was easily the biggest car I’ve ever owned. Seemed logical to go for the same power but in a body style that suited me better. I would gladly buy another and enjoy it.

It's interesting the mpg of the Citroen, I've been driving a 525i for 30k miles and it's given over 31mpg and also been reliable (touch wood). Where as my Mother in Law's Citroen Berlingo at 30k miles suffered a seized water pump and a a broke engine as a result.

If you put the J-Gate ‘in gear’ it doesn’t necessarily select that gear. For example if you select 3rd, it means that 3rd is the highest gear that it will select. It might use 1st, 2nd or 3rd depending on your driving style. This is a game changer for your driving experience when using the J-Gate and makes the gears changes much more suited to fun driving. Try it next time, the J-Gate is often misunderstood.

Greta video. Who doesn’t love a cheap big saloon? I do! I can vouch for the Jaguar XJ experience and I had one (X300) recently and I loved driving it, but working on it was challenging at times and required time I didn’t have. However, if you have the time and buy a good car, it’s a very rewarding experience.

I bought a 2007 jaguar vandenplas earlier this year here in the 🇺🇸. You don't see these cars here that often. Overall really nice car, but it does have some issues like the headliner falling down. Rides really good. I really like these older jaguars.

I drove an old 83 XJ6 S3 during the summer and except the neutral safety switch nothing broke. Those cars are better than their image

I own a 2001 Daimler/Jag L.W.B. V8 4 litre. I have had the car for 8 years. It is the best car I have ever owned. The ride is superb. Queen Elizabeth had the same model as her own car. Every time I drive the car my mood lifts. The interior is beautiful.. I was thinking of changing to a newer model but I have not yet seen a model which I like better so I have had a really good service including 2 new Cats and the car drives like a dream. I just cannot let this beauty go. Great review James, thanks.

I had the XJ8 4.2, same year and colour, unbelievable car, perfect wafter, it was very reliable too. I'd highly recommend one if you can put up with about 20mpg max

XJ6...iconic in my view...took me a year to find one...I coughed up 2 grand...age related marks and knocks but soon as as I get behind the wheel,somehow it all fades away,...gg..

I have an XJR and can definitely recommend one for slippy stuff. Yes seriously, a RWD powerhouse. The day I picked mine up we dove it back through blizzrads and sheet-iced back roads, all on baldy tires thanks to the shoddy Irish MOT system. It was unflappable, I couldnt understand where it was getting grip from. Seriously thinking of buying a neighbours XJ6 for winter wheels.

Eyed these up on more than one occasion when looking to replace a vehicle but unfortunately one of the places I'd been looking the one they had was the V8 which would have defeated the object for the mileage I was doing at the time. Perhaps some day I shall revisit this particular conversation, like the one which always wants me to add a Jag to my list of previously owned, but when that happens I do not know. Fab vid though; if I happen upon another in that shape maybe I'll point mum at it.

Mate, I totally agree with you. I have had all sorts, v8 s5/ e60 535d 400bhp fiestas- mate all sorts. But I just got my hands on a mint 2.7d s type 2005 manual. And it has changed me 😂 the way it drives, the comfort and the handling is insane, let’s just say this will not be my last jag 🤙🏼

I owned an 03 plate XJ6 absolutely after it. Swapped for a XJ6 on a 12 plate which is superb but something always makes me miss the XJ6 shape and style. Beautiful cars at a very adorable budget. JAG LIFE

My father always had Jaguar cars, the first one he ever bought in the fifties was a Jaguar 1½ Litre. Later he got a MK 1, than several MK 2 after those also several S Type a Mk X, which he not really liked to bulky, a E Type Series 1 4.2L and finally a 420.

Well funny you should mention the running costs of the Mini. We had a JCW R56 which was a nightmare. The engine was rebuilt twice and it was still a whole heap of trouble, I am defo not going down the Mini route again. The Jag still feels/seems like a bit of an old man's car but then I am no spring chicken so am I going to eventually come to enjoy a comfy pair of slippers? I suppose I owe it to myself to try one....That was a sensible review JayEmm and one which I will strongly consider.

I remember being in high school and being so dead set on having an XJ8 Van Den Plas as my first car, no knowing anything about reliability or even how to drive for that matter. Long story short, I am older and more wise with my car desires and I have to say, I still want one.

The difference in panel gaps between the right and left of the bonnet above the headlights would give me a permanent eye twitch.

I have a 57 plate s type xs jag with 140k miles on. Spent 2k on it. I’m 30 and love it. Has an extensive history but needs a bit of bodywork doing as has bit of rust round arches. Lovely car. Not gone wrong in my 2 years of ownership. After watching this I’ll be splashing out on it a bit. She deserves it. She’s in a lively blue colour which is rare as rocking horse.
