Here's Why A 20 Year Old Bought A Jaguar XJL Instead of A Hatchback
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Today, I feature Charlie's X351 Generation Jaguar XJL - a long wheelbase limousine designed to head up Jaguar's range. Where most young people would just buy a hot hatch, here's why a Jaaaaaag sometimes makes even more sense....

Thanks for the info💯🙏🏽I have a Quick question. I have HEAVY White smoke, sweet smelling Coming out The Exhaust of my “2011 Jaguar XJL 5.0” so I poured blue devil into my coolant reservoir (I didn’t drain my coolant before adding Blue devil, also had a sealed Radiator) Anyways I closed the coolant cap as soon as I poured the in & drove for about 30 mins, Next day later? My car just makes a 1 Click noise!! &Jump the car nothing Same Loud “1 CLICK”😢 What may have happened? (Also Car oil burns in under 3 days, and coolant reservoir becomes underfilled in 1 day) Also do you think it was my upper intake manifold? Blue devil May have sealed my cylinders stuck? How do I fix?!? Plz help?🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽😭

The problem young Charlie has is that his expectations are now sky high. He has committed himself to flagships for the rest of his life. Trust me, once you live with something like a XJ, S Class, 7 Series, A8 or LS, everything else feels like a downgrade.....

@@SonicMrSumo I thought they were stunning in 2009... Jag should just have kept making it in small numbers instead of axing it to make way for an uncompetitive EV that itself got scrapped.
One of the most elegant cars on the road, especially in long form. Sad that Jaguar have stopped making these.
Say what you want but I think this model was damn good looking and it has aged very well. It didn't look like the traditional Jag but still it's completely timeless design. It's big but doesn't look bloated. It's aggressive but aggressive like AMG-version of S-class, not overboard. It will still look good 10 years from now. As Clarkson said it looks "Cattish". In retrospect maybe it was just too different. But I love this design.

Yeah, Jay has some slightly unconventional views on aesthetics I think - he often doesn't seem to like cars that might be described as "swoopy". The Callum brothers will prove to be timeless designers. S550 Mustang, DB9, Jaguar XJ. This was such a departure when it came out from traditional Jag design. US dealers wouldn't except it and offered to ruin it for it's customers by drilling a hole in brand new body work to add a leaper.
I honestly couldn't disagree more with your opinions on its looks! It's a car that I've always thought was elegant, and reminds me of the older Jaguar Mk2 and Jaguar Mk.X (Daimler DS420), with a flowing design and a long tail. I think the proportions are perfect (especially the long wheelbase), and both the interior and exterior have aged incredibly well. I think this is the best looking 4-door we've had since it was released, and I think it will be a long time before we see something like it. Love the video!

I couldn't disagree more on the looks front or back. It still holds its own today, visually. Like a beautiful, tailored suit.
From the first time I saw one as a kid, through my teens, now 20s, I just stare and wow. For its dimensions and height, the looks are beautiful and elegant. If it was the size of a 5 series then maybe it'll look odd. But it's size and style are a perfect match. Beautiful car.
I actually think the back end design makes the car look better. Nice car.
Oh my goodness. Beauty is definitely in the eye of the beholder. I've always thought these to be stunningly beautiful cars from every angle.
As an XJ owner, I think the rear 3/4 view is as good a looking car as you will find in this class. It is a joy to drive, tremendous power in the mid-range especially and a better cab than any of the German competitors. I get around 50mpg on my daily drive to work too !
The young owner has great taste. The only problem he's going to have is how to top that for his next car.

You are so right… after seeing this the XF looks like a plush Volvo S60
I love the styling of this XJ. My first Jag was an XE, until I wrote it off. Replaced it with an S Type that had to much wrong with it and the MPG was terrible, especially when I was getting 55MPG in the XE. I've now swapped the S Type for an XJ 351 and I love it.
I've seen someone call this Jag XJ the most beautiful thing on 4 wheels. And for me it's up there, definitely. For looks, this beats the Maserati.
I think it's a brilliant looking car, lots of presence from the front. The back, I was at sure about until I saw one in the metal, but I really liked it. In 'R sport' trim, or XJR, with the boot spoiler, helps brake it up a bit. I think it looks very sleek from the side angle as well. Strangely, I've never been a fan of the quattroporte front design!

To be completly honest, while I agree that the rear end is by no means a masterpiece, I still think it`s still quite a decent looking thing, and can alctually look quite sharp overall in the right color... I think that it actually looks really sharp in a nice grey metallic, or a particularly shiny silver (like the ones in the photos you show in the video)
The Jaguar xj is a great looking car and the rear is beautiful and separates thus model Jag from all the other mundane cars.
I personally like the rear more than the front :) Beautiful interiors!
Charlie has class, the XJ is the best car I have ever owned. Before I bought mine I tried all the German options, great cars but no individuality or soul. The XJ is stunning, it has style, performance and if you have the diesel really economical. Only problem Charlie has is where do you go after the Jag!
The rear makes this car what it is. Beautiful.
I love my big cat. I walk out to it every morning and drool anew. It's stately, it's comfortable, it's well appointed and if I plant the right pedal there's not much stays side-by-side.
It is a beautifully designed car.
I really like it's looks, I don't think the back end is terrible, it's actually really nice.
I think they are very good looking, rear is nice too.
I actually like the looks. I would rather have had this over the XF I used to own.
Man, I loved this Jag and still love it.
Stunning looking car inside and out
I salivate every time I see one of those big Jag XJ's. I just love every thing about them including the looks.
I want an XJ so badly. But I like the older X350 version. Super classy. The new one has nice technology.
Ive always had a soft spot for these. They're definitely on my list of cars to own.
It's bloody stunning?! You are 100% correct on that leaping Jaguar, it's horrid and lacks the intimidation/ aggression (for want of better words) of sitting in a Jaaaaaaag
I disagree with your opinion on the looks personally I absolutely love the looks and the rear tail lights are what differentiate it from another luxury saloon, other than that great vid 👍
Really enjoyed your video, I am on my 11th Jaguar XJ, had my first 32 years ago and been through all the models, always bought them when they were about 3 to 3 1/2 years old. Just had one brand new one, a February 2011 LWB Luxury, had that one 8 1/2 years before a drunk wrote it off, I replaced it with a 2015 LWB Portfolio. I still have 2004 SWB Super V8 in red that I cannot bear to part with . I am lucky to have a local excellent main dealer that helps me out so much, been using them for over 30 years. As you mentioned they represent excellent value for money. I have taken all of mine to very high mileages as well, over 200000 for a couple of them.
Funny thing is taste. I think this is the best looking xj.
Awesome car, my dad just purchased one. I’m very jealous! I think it’s a glorious looking car. Lots of class.
I think it looks great - as said, not many big saloons are pretty (well, except the older model mercedes CLS, which still looks wonderful).
Big luxury cars don’t have to be pretty, they need presence, and the Jag has that.
I've gone XFS, XFR and now I have the XJ. I think it's a stunning car to behold personally, it has real presence, and for the money they are, I don't think you can do better. Great video by the way 👍

I think they are a fabulous looking limo. Just what Jag needed to bring the XJ into the 2000s. Agreed with the flat black C pillar comments, that's why the black works. But, I think the rear 3/4 view is spot on.
Enjoyed that. I test drove a couple and nearly bought a L Autobiography model. The plan was to pair it with an existing older S Max for tip duties, carrying bikes around etc but then the plan needed to change and I ended up getting a Q7 Vorsprung- similar but different but able to shift enough gear for climbing, camping, family holidays etc
I do think for its size it looks ok, certainly better than the 7 series.

I, for one, love the art deco inspired shape of the XJ
I absolutely loved my X351 XJ portfolio it was by far the best family sized cars I have ever owned much better than my BMWs Audi and Merc. Also James you are clearly blind the XJ looks cool.
Disagree 100% about the looks. Its one of the best looking modern jaguars they made. It draws attention more then a typical 7 series and S class, which are just dull in comparison to it. The car needed to get modernised else itll just be like a Morgan, catering to a small demographic of pensioners. Well done Ian Callum for modernising Jag!
I actually quite like the looks of this, especially the boaty interior and dashboard, still quite modern...just look at what an S Class interior looked like in 2010.

I’m a 21 year old who loves luxury Sedans, preferably I’m looking to get myself a BMW F01 730d as a first car. We had one in the family for years and literally no issues with the car, unfortunately it got sold. Would have loved to owner that example because it was fully equipped. It had all the optional extras possible except a few like rear individual seats and the optional sound system. It had all the lane keep assist, rear entertainment, night vision etc.
This s a damn good looking car.. One of Jags best!
Excellent video. Reminds me of when the head gasket was going on my first car (54 plate Hyundai Getz), and as an 18 year old I then bought a 10 plate Saab 9-3. Absolutely loved it and has given me a true soft spot for all things Saab and I've remained with diesel saloons since, currently on a 14 plate top spec Audi A4 2.0 TDI quattro that I bought at 20, 4.5 years ago
The two tone Black and Tan interior is perfect in this. I have it in my e60 as well and imo it’s the nicest spec you’ve can get in the non M variants
Sorry Jay, but this jag is just BEAUTIFUL. any angle, front or back, just beautiful
From some angles I think the it looks stunning and from others awkward but for sure it has the best interior of an XJ ever and congrats to Charlie.
I bought one of these two years ago. Mine is a Portfolio with the same trimmings as the one in this video; at 47,800 miles, it’s interior barely shows any sign of wear. Bear in mind that I am a septuagenarian, and my previous car was a high mileage XJ 6 350 model, initially I was not over fond of the style change. However, I beg to differ with your comparison with the XF - which looks undistinguished & the huge aggressive frontal view looks out of place its shortened profile. Not so with the XJ Portfolio, when you have ow ione for two years, it certainly grows on you - it is not ‘pretty’ I agree, but truly lives up to the ordinal label given n they are really smooth and act superbly with medium application & only the ‘g’ force steadily felt against the self tightening seat harness, then you find yourself gliding past the 30mph sign at just that. There maybe more luxurious cars out there, but which other four door saloon gives you a B&W 1200watt stereo system, massage seats & a suede headlining, as well as all the extras you mentioned. Mine is the same black with cream interior, it takes a while to optimise the driving seat & all other personalised features & set the memory, go away for a four hour journey, and step out having none of the usual tiredness. You might say that after two years, I really love this car! And sorry, they do look the role as well. This ‘big cat’ is every bit what a Jaguar has always been
Bravo that man. I too had a 10 year old luxobarge back in 2015 when I owned a 2005 730d aged just 24. People at work laughed but I cruised home in the most comfort 😉 Quickly sold it after a year and £2k of repairs under BMW extended warranty! Still hanker for another wafting barge now aged 32!
A note on the Dynamic mode, when traveling at highway speeds on uneven road surfaces I find the standard mode to feel a bit floaty (not in a good way). Turning on Dynamic tends to feel better planted with the trade off being a slightly harsher ride. I used to own a '83 XJ series 3 , still own a X308 and a X351. The X351 is for sure the one I want to keep and drive every day.
I actually love the way the XJ looks. Big, strong, masculine front end. I like the way the grille goes just above the headlights and gives the front end that extra sculpting. I love the long hood. The interior room is excellent. And I love the way the rear end slopes back to a taper at the end. I’d say that gives it a pretty elegant side profile, personally. And from the back, those fat rear tires make it look like it’s ready to grab the road and keep moving. The aluminum body and v8 if you get that give the car a lightweight and athletic feel. It’s a great car that deserves more credit than it’ll probably ever get. -2011 Jaguar XJ owner
I have a 2010 Jag xf, 3.0 ltr diesel. It has been well looked after and drives like a dream. We towed a caravan around Europe this summer and covered just over 4,000 miles travelling through 7 countries. Two people actually said I love your car and one guy in Switzerland who was driving an older style jag saluted us. The car was faultless. I used to tow with a 2 ltr 3 series BMW diesel but had a few breakdowns with that including, timing chain breaking and a year after that was repaired I had to have the engine reconditioned. So if you fancy a Jaguar but are put off by what people say (they are not reliable) ask them if they have one as this is the best cat I've ever owned, and it's good on fuel. Over and out.
The boy has class.
In June of this year I was looking to buy a new XF but was balking at the long wait. When the salesman showed me this one with 16,000 miles on the clock; as soon as I sat in it I decided to buy it - what a great impulsive buy. I love the drive, the interior is fabulous and I can overtake 4 cars at once on the A7 to Edinburgh! I agree, the real problem is what to replace it with of the modern cars. (Driving very gently I achieved 47mpg goint to Edinburgh including the occassional burst of speed.)
My XJ is very pretty because it is silver with off white leather, a wood rim steering wheel and non-blacked out windows. It really is magnificent.
My father owned a 2014 XF and was a wonderful car. Unfortunately, he had to sell it and go for a SUV due to a hip surgery (the car was too low for him to practically get in and get out). I so believe the XJ is a step up in relation to the XF, so i truly understand your positive acknowledges regarding the model itself. Great choice!
Charlie has discovered one of the best kept secrets of car insurance. Drive something not normally associated with your demographic. It was true when I had a fast estate 25 years ago, and apparently it remains true today!
I think it's a pretty car. I'd choose it over a 2014 Quattroporte but not over a 2017 one (because the later one has the updated interior), if the choice was between the two (in reality I'd be too concerned about reliability to consider buying either 😅)
In my opinion the previous generation knocks this out of the park in terms of looks.
When I was in my 20's I had a mk.5. Cortina 1.6 GL Auto!
I did a similar thing, as a 20 year old I bought a lexus is250. It's top spec (electric memory heated and cooled leather seats are my favourite bit) and it's quite a change from all the fiestas and polos my friends have which are actually more expensive
I'm a young person. I bought a used '17 XF and absolutely love it. 335hp in a comfy sedan for less than a WRX.
I own a 2011 XJL SuperSport and I constantly get compliments on how beautiful my car looks. This 12 year old car is still sexy and the styling may not look vintage, but the sleekness of the styling is actually timeless. So it is just your opinion that the car isn’t attractive from the rear. I actually think the rear is unique and not made like any other car’s rear end which makes it attractive.
Cool ride ...smart move by the young owner. Sharp choice
Usually agree on most things but your wrong here. Then X350 did a great job of hanging on to that classic jag look. But these also look fantastic - striking, modern, bold and handsome just as Jaguars have often been. They are fantastic things.
I think you need a trip to specsavers, as an owner of one of these the biggest draw is its looks. Much better looking than a 7 series, a8 or s class, the rear looks fantastic! The others win in mostly everything else but for performance, handling and looks the jag beats them.
I have had two of these over the last 8 years. The most reliable and comfortable car I have ever used - and I have owned over 100. The Diesel of course - 50mpg and more than ample performance. As for the looks that is in the eye of the beholder. I think they look terrific, and I have owned at least one of every XJ ever made. The interior is exceptional. Mine is a daily while my weekend stable includes a 1994 XJS and a 1997 Bentley Turbo RL. And yes I enjoyed your review of the Bentley Turbo R too!

I've just bought one in grey with the super sport package, still a 3.0 twin turbo diesel but the sports package helps alot with the looks. I love it, best daily I could imagine but I do wish they did an estate to be the Ultimate Daily Driver.
These look stunning, I think the best view is from the back and side, I find the front a little boring, face-lift looked better
As Clarkson pointed out in Top Gear, if this Jag had the looks of the Bertone B99 it would have been perfect. I couldn't be more on with that statement
I love the looks, front and back
The Jagggg is a fine looking automobile. No problems there. The real irony, however, evidenced itself at the very beginning when describing the Audi RS-E-Tron GT as a grand tourer. A Grand Tourer indeed... provided your grand tour is less than 200 miles.
Underrated car for me personally

Good on Charlie for carrying the young bargeist torch forward.
The Jaguar XJL is undoubtedly a very good looking car... especially its tail lights...
It’s a thing of beauty, pace and grace. Absolutely superb in the 3.0 litre diesel configuration. The way it puts the power down to the road with it’s 700 nm of torque gives me a frisson of pleasure every time. It sweeps, swoops and glides. Beautiful. I’m nearly 80 and have driven them all. This is motoring Nirvana. Thank you Ian.
I've got a 2016 autobiography and I absolutely love it. I love the looks, front and back and it absolutely churns up & down the M40 with ease. Nice review though. It's deffo more sporty than a 7 series and it's a car you can enjoy driving. I've got a firestick set up for the rear TV screens for the kids, it's perfect. The autobiography comes with 360 top down parking which really helps with keeping your alloys scratch free. It is an arse to manoeuvre in drive threws, and forget multistorey car parks, way too long 😆😆 mpg is excellent, keep to the speed limit on the mway and it's returning around 55mpg and 38mpg/ish around town. Deffo a great purchase for anyone looking for a big well equipped saloon. A full service record is vital as the cranks can live a short life if the oil isn't serviced when necessary. Also timing belt change is every 7 years or 110k miles. Most of the problems tend to be sunroof rattles (easy fix) and door actuators, around £8 each. Infotainment system is decent but deffo worth upgrading through icebox auto and you'll get apple play & android auto. Strangely a lot of electrical problems with various modules tend to be rectified (so I'm told) by removing the battery connectors for 20 mins. Things like the onboard tracker and remote unlock & remote climate start you'll need to pay a subscription for, as does getting the up-to-date sat nav maps. Jaguar are still sending out infotainment updates despite the car being out of production. The last one I received was October last year 2022.
As a owner of a 1984 VDP and the xj351, I think the designers finally got it right since the series 3.
This generation of XJ is brilliant, I’ve got a SWB in Portfolio trim.
As a 22 year old 2016 XF driver, I can agree it's a great decision, especially given the low relative depreciation and how great it is to drive. However despite the claims from the comments, insurance is still an absolute pain and I dread to think how much worse it would have been without the 3 years no claims on the Yaris despite living in a alright area by insurer metrics and a low risk job. Also, it may be due to my own poor checks before buying it, but maintenance has been far from cheap so not quite a slam dunk decision.
bought mine new in 2017 and have had zero issues with the car. Going on 50k miles. The XJ short wheel base looks better than the xjl... the rear looks good with the factory spoiler.
