Jaguar XJ X350 - Cheap Luxury, But A REAL Jag? (2002 XJ8 4.2 Sport Road Test)

The Jaguar XJ is the car that defined the brand, through decades of grace, space and pace. The X350 generation offered a revolutionary all-aluminium platform and modern interior, but is it a REAL Jaguar? Phil Weeden discusses reliability, styling and whether the X350 is cheap for a reason…

I’ve owned my 05 Superv8 for 15 years . 72 K and very few issues to deal with. Just drove from Nova Scotia to Arizona in 4 days 3450 miles, 27.8 mpg @75 to 100 mph , avg 74 mph , after 12 hrs of driving you get out and not feel tired at all. A fantastic driving experience. Black / Champagne, gets all kinds of attention wherever I go . One classic automobile. I will never sell it.

I am a Brit exiled in Florida and a Jaguar lover having owned a Series 1 XJ6 LWB and an E-type and now my 2004 X350 XJ8. I do all of my own work on my cars and though my XJ8 has only 74K miles with a full service history and only one previous owner, she still needed some care and attention. All of the suspension bushings and both rear tie bars had to be replaced as well as the two front air struts. Luckily these parts are relatively inexpensive - we even have an airstrut rebuilder here in Florida. The biggest risk is the transmission. The ZF 6 speed was described as being maintenance free. With no dipstick to even check the fluid. Not true. Fluid and several seals under the valve body should be replaced every 70K miles or so along with the plastic sump with integral filter and genuine ZF transmission fluid (not cheap). Other issues to look for are leaking thermostat housing (Cheap replacement) and water pump. Here in Florida sagging headliner are common though mine is perfect. I love my Jag and prefer to drive it to my 2016 Audi A8. Buy these while they are cheap and cherish them - the last of the great Jags.

The comments on the shape is obviously a matter of opinion. The x350 is more “muscular” and more refined than its predecessor, which was a little “flat” in the rear, in comparison... although I still liked the shape. They just improved it with the 350, with its “throw back to the 60s” overall shape and flow. And I LOVE driving mine... Thanks for the great video..

I've owned three generations, previously the x308 which was british racing green. My x350 outshines it in every respect and it gets more comments than the x308 did. The main problem for me (as other x350 owners) has been air suspension. I've replaced three air shocks thus far, and I had an accelerator pedal problem. Also the dash info screen started 'scrolling' supposedly due to a sync wire. It's not an easy upgrade there, since your climate controls on touch screen models are through that infotainment screen. Other than that, I love driving it and I always look back at the car in admiration. I think i'll keep this one and even throw in a bigger american v8 when the engine finally goes ; but i've seen these go up to 300k without a hiccup.

I have a 2009 XJ8, the "X358" with the slightly different front and rear bumpers, and the ugly fake scoops on the fenders. Despite the questionable styling choices on the facelifted version, I actually love this car. It's probably the best driving car I've ever had. A 4.2L DOHC fuel injected V8 with variable valve timing and high compression, 6 speed transmission, RWD, fully independent rear suspension, 4 wheel disk brakes, dual exhaust, and a lightweight aluminum body...it's got all the go fast hot rod parts you could want, in the body of a classic British luxury car. I call it a gentleman's muscle car. Fun, fast, comfortable, stylish, roomy...this car does it all.

It's interesting reading the comments about these later versions of the XJ concept. I won't criticize any of these cars, as I have driven none. We are still very happy with our Series 2 XJ6, which handles like a dream, has a personality of it's own, as all older Jags should have, and is in fact the last of the REAL Jags, because Sir William Lyons designed it. From the Series 3 onwards, it was a different era.

The best one to have in my view. I've had my 2003 model for six years with little trouble. 30mpg on a long run. The V8 is quieter, but thirstier. The diesel has to have cambelt changes and egr valves. The 3 litre engine is readily available second hand if needed. Some parts are very expensive from Jaguar, but brakes and suspension bits are available pattern. Biggest expense so far- rear wishbones.

Having had Jags through the ages I must say this 2006 XJ8 I have is the best car of them all for the classic style Jags. The XJR would be the one I will get if I can find the right one for the right money. I got my XJ8 with such low miles for a 15 year old car it was like I stole it. It is still feels higher class than any newer cars such as the 2020-21LEXUS that my neighbors drive. It is far more class for the money than any car of it age that stands out and still turns heads.

X351 isn’t as distinctive. It’s not the car the X350 “wanted” to be... The x350 is much more stylish in the classic sense. The 351 and after have tried too hard to appeal to the “modern esthetic”, design-wise, instead of staying true to Jaguar’s identity. I understand that there comes a point to “move on”, but I’m happy to own one of the last modern classic Jags...the X350. With all its quirks, it’s still “sexier” than the later ones..

But in The States, where I'm at, there's plenty of high speed freeways called Interstates (sort of equivalent to motorways of Europe) where I look forward to taking it out on and getting some high speed highways miles on it.

An OK review but no mention of the electrolytic corrosion that can occur between the aluminium body components and the rivets holding them together. Also, no mention of the Ford-sourced 3 litre V6 engine, that gave perfectly acceptable performance for this type of car, yet was very reliable and cheap to fix on the rare occasions it went wrong.

The V6 diesel was a joint Jaguar/Ford/PSA development. Ford closed the Jaguar engine plant in Radford Coventry where the Jaguar designed V8 was due to be built, and put it into Bridgend in the Jaguar cell, while the V6 was buuilt in Dagenham.

Think much of your criticism is a matter of personal taste. You say the XJ40 is your favourite, yet It is my least. To me, the best looking XJ of the lot was the Series 3 and the X350 is the closest to it that came after. Having got to my mid 40s, I don't want to be on my back welding for another MOT, so the X350 being aluminium, is a really practical choice. Picked up a 3 litre V6 in the summer, with FSH @108k miles, for just £1450. Few cosmetic details to sort and it was cheap due to MOT expiring after it was part exchanged, but it sailed through a new one.

@@skelejp9982 The front of the X300 and X308 were certainly a great improvement over the XJ40, replacing the rear doors that I personally dislike. One area that the pre-X350 cars certainly excel in is ride comfort. The airbags on the X350 ruin the traditional magic carpet ride. My car is a keeper and I would like at some stage a coil spring conversion. I wonder if anyone here has tried that and if it did improve ride quality?

I had the 3.5 litre V8 for4 years. Best car I ever drove, worst car I ever owned. When it reached four years and 40K miles it went into self destruct mode. Steering rack collapsed, compressor for air suspension croaked, air con compressor died, rear suspension linkages all needed renewing (thankfully at this stage independents had figured a way to press in new bushes instead of replacing complete arm), corrosion where badly galvanised rivets attaching aluminium panels to steel frames allowed galvanic corrosion between the steel and aluminium. There is more but if I continue I'll have to book another session with my psychiatrist. On the bright side it was a fantastic drive but as I was using it for business I could no longer justify the constant outflow of cash and horrendous depreciation.

You are reviewing the wrong car here . This is nothing but an attempt to recreate what once was . The car you should be reviewing is the series 3 V12 in Jag or Daimler form . That was the pinnacle of Jaguars greatness . everything that followed was Jaguar trying to make their cars look like the series 3 but failing at every juncture . What I am going to tell you all now is true. 3 weeks ago, whilst visiting a stately home in Mid England , despite many other jags in the public car park, the national trust employees saw me coming in my series 3 and waved us round to the owners car park in front of the house thinking we were royalty in our series 3 . Nuff said !!
