If you want one and can afford one, buy one. Its also a great investment. I wish I had bought classic Porsche cars a long time ago, I am old enough to remember when you could buy a tatty but decent running 356 for under £500.

As a millennial in circa 2013 I was facing this exact question. £42,000 for a Minerva blue over cream 930 turbo. It had been restored and was only driven on a Sunday by the dealer who owned it. He never sold it and retained it. He wanted it to go to a good home and I was going to daily it in Manchester weather. I felt irresponsible to the car to do that. I next found a supersport with the same body but no turbo in red over black but decided that the risk of big bills was too big. Wish I had bought both haha. Now I’m in a bore scored 997. Go figure.

Easy fix

The crazy thing is, I see more and more of my friends just buying pre 2010's 911's/caymans' because we feel the need to enjoy ourselves now. We have been told to work hard, save, save, save for a home but we've already come to the realization that isn't even a remote possibility anymore and saving for a home is pointless if you can never afford one. Might as well get something that brings you a little joy in life and if it's a car, then it's worth it.

Drove and bought my very first Porsche out of Paragon about 8 weeks ago now after traveling 550 miles to collect it and loving every second of ownership It wasn’t a classic (Cayman 981 S) but what a machine this car is 😎 Paragon were and are fantastic to deal with and would highly recommend to anyone thinking of purchasing a Porsche to get involved with Paragon 🙌

@@9WERKSTV …I had never even turned a key or a wheel in a Porsche before until I got to Paragon…only sat in one at Aberdeen Porsche Bought the car without even seeing it in person (and don’t forget I’d never even driven a Porsche…ever 😁) as such was the fantastic salesman Jason who dealt with the whole process and making everything so comfortable and easy It really was a great journey…..and I’m over the moon with the car Great video 👍

Spot on. I’m quite a bit older than you, born in the 1960s, but Porsches from the ‘80s and mid ‘90s are absolutely daily driveable. As you note, they’re also scarce, which is appealing when late model Porsches aren’t all that rare. Sometimes I wonder if all the modern technology has improved the overall experience - new cars often feel ordinary and somewhat interchangeable.

Quality classic Porsche have been a low teens per year appreciating asset since 2008. Better than stocks. To me it’s about what Lee describes as well as the analog driving experience and the quality of the cars.

Born in 88. I absolutely LOVE Porsche 911's and classic cars. Looking to buy one in the next year or so. Also looking at C5 or C6 'vette too.

I’m a millennial (born in early ‘82) and on my wall from about age 5 was a framed picture of various Porsche from the last decade or so. I remember 930, 928, SC, 3.2 and 959 (which must have been the newest model there!). Started my love for Porsche. I was starting to be bought the occasional car mag and watch old TopGear by the time the 964 and then the 993 came out but it was the 996 (and 986 Boxster)landing as my interest in car was growing massively that has meant they’ve always been the special model for me. Convenient that they’re pretty much the only Porsche sports cars I can afford!

I absolutely agree. I own a 2001 Porsche Carrera Cabriolet which I love. However my next Porsche will definitely be a classic. I love old school technology and I add to my collection I don't subtract. Happy Motoring!

Totally agree with everything Lee. Speedster is a fascinating car - marmite depending on the angle. But always a winner in terms of individuality.

Even before watching the video, I was convinced of the “benefits” of an old one. I’ve had a 996 for 8 years. I only dream of one thing: have an SC, which was born at the same time as me. I am not/no longer a millennial 😊

Nice content again Lee! The look on your face when you got into the Speedster speaks volumes! I run a 1999 Carrera 2 as my daily, for many of the reasons you state in this video: reliable, usable, fun to drive, relatively easy to work on and absolutely depreciation proof.

It’s not an age thing. It’s a state of mind. What’s important to you? Heritage and tradition, or lap times and bragging rights? When driving my 964 I much more of the time have my foot down, than when driving a modern one. It’s more fun driving a slow car fast, than driving a fast car slow. And remember, one doesn’t own a classic Porsche, you’re just it’s temporary caretaker before the next one.

And to your EV argument, in a month or so, I’m taking delivery of my GT4RS, and had to decide wether to sell my first of 13-14 Porsches,the 1990 964C4, or my 2020 Taycan 4S. I think you can deduct which one I kept😉

I bought my first car, a 1939 Rolls-Royce Wraith, when I was 28. Nothing exceptional about buying a car older than you are. My passion in life are 1920/30's cars, and believe me, I wasn't there then, and neither were my parents.

Saw that exact Speedster at this years Oilcooled event. Was one of the best cars there in my opinion. Absolutely stunning vehicle.

Do no buy this car if you do not have a reliable, experienced mechanic nearby that can actually fix it. I owned one and had to sell it because the "specialist" Porsche mechanics around me were not very good.

I've had my g body 911 for 3 years, I've driven it 20,000 miles and I work on it myself. They're really not that complicated, they're just different.

Millennials and Speedsters?? Oil and water. So be the air!!!! Full-on YES from me. I'm not even mad that someone younger than me is driving a car that I cannot afford. Kudos.

Speedster are fantastic models in the range (just my personal opinion). Took my 991 speedster down to Annecy and through the Alps to Switzerland 🇨🇭. Great fun.

You ever sat in one? Im 6’7” and have owned an 83 SC and currently have an 86 911 turbo. I fit comfortably in both!!

Great unbiased understanding of Porsche. There are nuances that can not be replicated by any other manufacturer. A well restored/sorted G body Porsche is difficult to obtain. With that said you will become a devoted caretaker (or Obsessed Lunatic) while owning an air-cooled Porsche. From the USA I say hello to all with my Classic Retrofit electric AC from the UK sitting at the front door in boxes. I've never been sooo excited to install ice cold air in my Florida driven Pcars. Lee, Great work again-stay ahead of that curve.

Lovely looking cars. I sense the smartest possible buy right now is a 996 Turbo Manual.

I generally agree with the premise that classic 911s will continue to hold their value or increase in the near future. The question I have is what happens to these values looking out 15-20 years (or more)? In order for values to stay stable or increase, there will need to be a pool of people who want to buy these classic cars in the future. I see two problems: one is generational and one is governmental/economic. Generationally, younger millennials and Gen Z simply do not seem to be as interested in internal combustion cars the way older millennials, Gen X or Boomers are. And eventually that latter group will either become too old to want to keep these cars or will simply have died, with few replacement buyers. In terms of governmental/economic barriers, in the first world, e.g, the United States the UK and the EU, we can only expect that there will be more and more regulation inhibiting the use and increasing the cost of internal combustion engines. Also, as more and more new cars produced are either electric or hydrogen powered, we can reasonably assume the infrastructure to deliver gasoline to consumers will also decrease over time. At some point, therefore (20-30 years?) likely it will be prohibitively expensive to find and purchase fuel and/or operate these cars publicly. When this occurs, classic cars will become museum pieces or some thing that only the ultra wealthy (a relatively small pool) can afford to use and maintain. I think that these factors will become apparent well before they actually happen and as the writing on the wall gets ever clearer, the prices of everything but really exceptional/highly desirable classic cars will begin to drop. My hypotheses do not stop me from buying classic cars today as I buy them to drive and enjoy them and not as investments. But I am curious as to what you and others think will happen in the future.

I suspect that electric cars are more likely to replace modern, daily-driver type cars. Air-cooled 911s -- and 356s, for that matter -- offer an irreplaceable experience. Offered the choice of a Taycan or Panamera, I'd take the Taycan without hesitation. Between a Taycan and a 964... the older car is unique: You can't buy anything like it anymore. Just as 356s have long ago been retired from the daily driver population but command huge money in top condition, I would predict air-cooled 911s will be sought after by well-heeled enthusiasts for decades. Secondly, at least in the United States, governments cannot legislate a product out of use. That is, if a 1970 Porsche conformed with all applicable regulations in 1970, it cannot be declared illegal because it runs afoul of 2025 regulations. It may well be that petrol/gasoline is expensive and difficult to find in the future, but affluent car enthusiasts will likely reserve old 911s for recreational use. From my perspective, as a person with lungs, this would be ok.

@GSK Europe is also taking steps to protect the environment. US can try to trash it but ultimately we’re buyers of European cars, so the era of ICE is winding down either way.

Classic 911’s are good cars if bought right. Very reliable at least in my experience. I had a very mint really low mileage 997 that I simply did not gel due to me wanting more engagement with my car, went Aircooled and never looked back. Simple but robust.

Same for me. I was born in ‘83. Didn’t have a 911 on my wall (I had a Testarossa and an R129 SL). However, I played both Need For Speed and Porsche Challenge as a kid, and bought early editions of Evo magazine with my pocket money after school, so that’s why my “collection” (hate that term as it doesn’t feel right for me) currently includes a 996 C2 and 987 Boxster S. Can’t see myself without some sort of classic Porsche, maybe even an air cooled one if I could ever afford one.

Excellent summary Lee, with real good one liners as why you should buy one! Simply, for a complete engagement of the driving experience then buy a classic. You will always smile when you drive it. Maintenance is not that bad, as they were made simple (as long it hasn't been neglected) and made for daily driving. Owned numerous aircooled now, brilliant cars!! Well done Lee.

Spot on comment. As proof point, my two classic Porsche have outperformed the US stock market by a wide margin since 2008 with no sickening drawdowns.

I do not understand . 9WERKS TV is one of the best porsche-channels . But only 378 tumbs up after one year .

I am in no way a millennial! I have had three air cooled 911’s and two 996’s plus lots of other Porsche’s. I will say I agree with Lee, you have to find the right Porsche for you, and your price range. The air cooled cars have the sound, character and iconic looks that the water cooled cars don’t have, for sure! Having said that, the 996’s are faster and out handle them by a mile! Plus they have a big enough back seat and safer seat belt for my daughter!

i would kill for a 993 turbo today, really think theyre gonna be goldmines in the near future and it's perfect 911 for me

997.2 GT3 is relatively cheap , like 50% of its RS big brother , and 25% of the 4.0RS 90% of the experience for significantly less 😄

The pre 89 cars are lighter and have loads more character, both of which go a very long way. The 915 gearbox is way better than the g50 IMO, and I've got one of each. Far more rewarding and perfectly smooth once you master it.

Is it worth it? How can this guy say no when the dealership lent him the car to drive 🤦‍♂️ and expect they'll let him drive other porsches ever again.

How many millenials can afford to buy air cooled classic Porsches? Classic Ferraris and air cooled Porsches have become old man's cars because only older men can afford them these days. LOL.

Sadly from 2030 on all combustion cars including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas station per city or county. Now they even want to slow down all the gas pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime. Called "Bundesabgasbespaßungsverbotsverordnung" in German.... :-/((((

If it is not a 911, it is not the right model. The 9** is just not.

I've owned over a dozen Porsches from a 57 356A Speedster to 66 and 67 912's to a dozen 911's from 69 through 87 including an 82 930 Turbo. The G50 gearbox on the 87 was a POS, on very cold winter mornings you almost couldn't shift and the metal knob was FREEZING. On every Porsche except the very early 912's and 911's the cockpit air ventilation was TERRIBLE, defrost was awful, heat non-existent and CO poisoning to the point where you'd pass out on cold mornings no matter how new your exhaust system was, just a TERRIBLE design. Air conditioning? Forget it! Porsche NEVER got it right on air cooled Porsches, just awful. Why? It never gets hot in Germany, lived there for two years, on a day over 80F the Germans were committing suicide, that's a spring day in USA. I think there are two really great Porsches - the early 1980's SC with the 3.0 motor and the early 986 Boxsters. I bought several mid-1980's 911's during the late 2,000's and loved every one of them. Perfect cars except for the heat and a/c. I have a 1998 Boxster 986 that is the perfect sports car, it will also carry COSTCO toilet paper and paper towels in the two trunks! Try that in a 911! All the rest have problems and are too complicated. Front engine Porsches are not Porsches, they are Audis, and I'm being liberal allowing the water cooled Boxster in only for the reliable heat and a/c!

LOVE the SC 911, I'd love to drive a long hood one of these days though. Took the a/c out of my 81 911SC, it wasn't great when it was working and totally in the way when I need to adjust the valves. The heat on the other hand... I removed the blower motor in the engine bay and it still can cook the passengers in the cabin! I guess my heat exchangers are in decent shape.

@@zonoscopePictures People who don't know cars don't appreciate the 911 design. You sit like you're at the dinner table and you are surrounded by glass, compared to a Corvette you are floating above the other cars. The front hood slopes down so much there is almost nothing that blocks your vision, the front fenders give you perfect perspective as to where you are in the lane. I remember the blower in the engine bay for the heat, I don't think my 3.2 1987 Carrera had one. I went over the heat exchangers and everything heat related over and over, it was simple enough, never could stop the CO getting into the car. I once hit a deep water puddle in the 1987 in heavy rain and the whole car filled with water vapor blinding me, freaking dangerous, the defrost simply didn't work! Insanely poor design on an otherwise superbly engineered car!

@@michaelschnittker7388 yes! The design. Its incredible to think that 356 die hards rejected it when it came out. The visibility is top notch. It’s so good, I have a Targa and I feel like I have a 360 degree view when I’m driving with the top off. I know what you mean about the defroster- I have to consult the owners manual to figure out how to use the fan! Im thinking about pulling the vent fan blower motor from the trunk and taking it apart to make sure it’s not going to burn up !
