ULTIMATE air-cooled Porsche 911 Turbo group test *Part 1: The 930 years*
Ойын-сауық
Part 2 here: • ULTIMATE air-cooled Po...
The 911 Turbo is a cult supercar, having been in production for nearly fifty years. The air-cooled cars were a symbol of luxury and extravagance in their day, while today they are celebrated as an icon of the 911 genre.
For the first time, 9WERKS TV brings every air-cooled 911 Turbo derivative together for a giant, head-to-head test - so big, in fact, we've had to split this into two parts!
In part one, we bring you the 930 years: from 1974-1989, the 911 Turbo underwent constant and quiet evolution as Porsche finessed their flagship supercar. But what are these classics like to drive? We sample the 3.0 then study the differences between it and the 3.3, with an added test drive of a cool Flachbau (flatnose) 930 as the very symbol of Eighties excess.
What are your thoughts on the iconic 930 Turbo? Which is best, the 3.0 or the 3.3? Enjoy the video and leave a comment below.
Thanks to Nigel for use of his classic Turbo collection, and to John Piper for help with logistics!

This silver 930 is so nicely specced, the seats **chef‘s kiss**
Love the 930 , the sort of thrills it gives you not many cars can match . Love it to bits, if you want speed get a GTR or TESLA , period. 930 is all about the driving experience

It all depends on what you do to the engine

@@kevinbodman1011 mine had kolken intercooler, k27 turbo and a new CIS fuel system. Thats all.
One of my favourite cars. It's interesting how time has moved on yet this car remains as beautiful as ever. Also notable is that my daily, a Fiesta ST, has only 23 NM of torque less than the original 930 icon.
Beautiful cars my favourite are the impact bumper cars proper 70s/80s weapons 👌
great video, cant wait for the next part.
Very well done
What a cracking film! It's so good to see my favourite 911s in action (especially the Flachbau). I can't wait for Part 2!

Thanks Trevor!
Note that Canada did receive 930s during the 1980's when they weren't being sold in the USA. Many Canadian cars entered the US as "grey-market" machines.
Fantastic to see these early cars, thanks Lee
Will watch later but had just to comment that the video is almost exactly 2*09:30 long 😁😁😁

Thanks Richard, I highly appreciate that.
Well put together Lee. The widow makers are awesome, but one has to know how to drive them. My 993 turbo was the best car that I've ever owned, brilliant machine and a missile to drive.
What a coup to have found AND gained entry into this collection. Well done!

My dad left me his 79’ 930 he got for a fairly “cheap” price in 1982. Most beautiful car ever made

Great video. And now I want one…
The original 1975/6 version of the Turbo, without the rear wing protectors, has never been bettered in terms of looks IMO! The 996 onwards Turbos leave me cold in comparison🙄
awesome episode

Absolutely my pleasure.
I really wanted to see you drive the Guards Red coupe!
Love your content. Gutted that the BoMo Porche Centre is no more :( Loved driving past it.
Excellent video. Never knew there were so few 3.0ltr Turbo's in RHD. Always saw one walking home from school in the late 70's - silver with the registration plate LWC 1. The guy who owned it then bought a brand new, white 3.3ltr. My dream car for many years and IMHO, the definitive Porsche.

Thanks Paul! Love how that memory of the 3.0 has been etched in your mind ever since… not many cars can do that!
Great video, when’s part 2 available ?

Not long time ago, I notice that porsche 993 has little facelift for base carrera (carrera 2). Pre facelift 1994 carrera 272 ps and 1996/1997 carrera (non S model) with 285 ps. Is it right?
thank you for a very informative video. I learned a lot. I have a 1976 turbo and number three sold in America. it has been slightly modified, in that has a T tray because a different air filter and intercooler were added onto the 3.0 engine. It was confusing for a while but this explains a lot. Phil 13:48

Glad you enjoyed, congrats on Turbo ownership!
I did not know the tea tray was reshaped on the sides for high speed stability -- it certainly needed it! The 930 actually returned to the U.S. in 1986 -- I know this for a fact because I drove one that year in Colorado.
The 3.0 only weighs 1140 kg vs 1300 kg for the 3.3. Quite a big difference. The 3.0 is effectivly like a 2.7 Carrera RS with a power hike. As agile and nimble as a 2.7 rs but with added hp. Awesome!
They were actually only banned in the U.S. for the 4 years - I own a 1981 which is one of 63 cars imported into Canada during that year.
0:54 Oldsmobile jetfire and turbo corvair were both available in the early 60s. They were the first production turbo cars. It takes 5 seconds to google this shit.
I love that it isn't a perfect restored car, it's a real used unit.
would love a 930 widow maker.
There I was, staring at the dashboard of the first 911 Turbo Lee tried out, at 2 min 30 seconds, wondering where the dickens in the gauge for coolant temperature was. Boy, do I feel stupid. In my defence, I’m a 996 owner.
The flat nose is the best Porsche to come out it Stuttgart, so glorious it as rear as a snakes ass and it’s worth having a small industrial accident for the flat nose Porsche!!
Or the 63 or 64 turbo Corvair.
Be interested to know if the 85.5 seats and electric cab roof were original to a 1983 car?
78/79 3.3 Turbo are the 930s to have.
Great review as per usual, and you started off well with your terminology (ie, 911 turbo OR 930), but then quickly fell into the common mistaken designation ‘930 turbo’ 😬
