Porsche's Speedster concept started with the 356 and returned on the 911 with the 3.2 Carrera Speedster to mark 25 years of the 911 in 1989. But did you know Porsche first revealed its 911 Speedster two years before as a radical concept for the 1987 Frankfurt Motor Show?
In this video I show you around this rare, 1-of-1 Speedster prototype and reveal its history, including Porsche's grand plans for the Clubsport prototype and how it was set to become an option for the 911 Speedster program. This is a fascinating look at the very beginning of the 911 Speedster model line, which is still going strong today following subsequent models in the 964, 997, and 991 generations.

Looking at a retrospective, it was a styling attempt preparing for water-cooled parts by making rear shoulder line much higher than a regular one.

I have to say I agree, to my mind a Speedster is a 356, the design never quite carried so elegantly over into a 911, but it was fun to unearth the story of this proto.

@@9WERKSTV Yes, 356 Speedster suits the bug-like body. Only the 991 and 992 start to look ok to after geneations of ungainly ones.
This looks like something Ferdinand would have rolled-out in the late 30’s or early 40’s 🤔
