Short 7mm Rem Mag (Part 2) - Trueing and Long Range Shooting

Спорт

I talk about trueing or validating a rifle load for long range shooting followed by some footage of some shooting done on some very windy days.

Well explained mate, I agree, the shortened 7mmRM just rock, I love mine. Good vid 👍👍

Good stuff. What a lot of guys miss as well is checking the barrel twist rate and verifying realistic BCs to that twist rate. Even a tikka 7mm standard twist rate compromises the eld bc by a fair bit. Enjoyed it

What was the velocity change from the standard length barrel and the shorty. I’m really considering shortening mine to 18”. Just concerned about the velocity loss. Hunting big arse moose but I typically don’t shoot past 400 yrds. Running a Rugged Alaskan Ti360 can. Thanks mate.

I changed powders when I shortened the barrel so I didn’t get a direct comparison unfortunately. I personally wouldn’t go less then 20” for a 7mm rem mag. I have multiple friends with them cut to 20” and that works out nice.

Informative. How would you combine that method with a CDS? Just do that first? Then supply the adjusted muzzle velocity?

Yup that’s the one mate. The good thing with a CDS is they are generally used within hunting ranges where the differences won’t necessarily be noticed if you have a reliable chronograph MV. Most of my rifles have been pretty bang on when I trued them after getting a reliable chronograph MV but there can be funny exceptions like my 284 for example required an adjustment from the labradar results.

Hi, I’m only a real novice to this stuff but I would have thought to true your data you should adjust the ballistic coefficient and not the muzzle velocity? You’re using a labradar which are as accurate as possible. The ballistic coefficients supplied by manufacturers on their projectiles are based on velocities they are inputting. So given you know the velocity of your rifle & load I would have trued the data by adjusting the BC and not the muzzle velocity. If your muzzle velocity changes so does your BC. The BC of a bullet is not a constant. I could be completely wrong but that is how I understood it?

Have a read up on the info available from Todd Hodnett at Accuracy 1st. They have all the good gems they teach to long range shooters and military snipers around the world.

chur bro im from hawkes bay and was wondering weather the 7mm rem mag would be good for places like the kawekas and ruahines while also having the flexiblity to go down south to the more open country?

Yea mate 100 percent! If I could only own one rifle with a factory chambering then it would be the 7mm rem mag 👌

Did you end up getting an updated cds after doing this? If so, was the cds dead on out to 800? I figured the whole point of the cds is that they take your ballistic info and customize a turret for you.

Hi mate, nah I don’t have CDS turrets. I prefer to just leave them in MOA

This is a Leupold VX5 3-15x44 with the windplex reticle. Wicked scope, my only complaint is the windplex reticle is a bit thick
