Short 7mm Rem Mag (Part 1) - Tikka T3x Superlight

Спорт

NOTE: Always start powder charges low and work them up in your own rifle. Do not immediately replicate the charges shown here.
In this video I talk through the shorter barrel modification I have done to my 7mm rem mag before developing a load to match the change.

I have the same Tikka in the lite version 7mm mag. I measured the lands and found that the magazine was just right. Right on the limit bascially with the 162 so it should work fine. I did buy a 300wm Tikka Varmint and its for sale because the mag length is shit and makes it a single load. Wish I had know that before I bought it. Went out and bought a Bergara B14 HMR and wont have that issue again with the bigger cals in Tikka. Good video mate. eally enjoyed it.

It is a custom one slightly modified for the shorter barrel magnum. It’s exactly the same in all features except the rear chamber just extends further over the barrel 👍

Looking good mate. Youll enjoy the shorter barrel. Those Alliant Reloder powders are awesome eh. Ive just started running Re26 in my 22" 7mm SAUM. 63gr pushing 162 at 3087 fps. And thats 1.5-2grs below where i see excess pressure signs. Magic stuff

Cool video! Got a question for you. How good is your powder measure/ trickler as In accuracy? as I’ve been lead to believe that electronic scales are not that good for weighing powder. Also I see with your speeds are within 5fps are they always this consistent? Sorry for all the questions but I’m looking at getting one and don’t want to out lay the money if they aren’t that good. Cheers. Looking forward to your next video 👍

Thanks mate. The electronic powder thrower is good. I wouldn’t say my speeds are always that consistent but they have improved since using a labradar instead of an old chrony and being more deliberate with my powder charges. The powder dispenser is accurate to +/- .1gr, I have compared powder charges into beam scales and it’s pretty good. I am fussy though so I throw the charge .1gr below my intended charge and then I drop 1 grain of powder at a time into the tray until it ticks upto my intended charge weight. Hope that helps.

I haven’t tried it to be honest mate. I would say there’s every chance it won’t shoot as accurate with the suppressor off due to the change in the harmonics.

Hi mate, unfortunately I don’t have that rifle anymore and can’t measure it sorry. All my notes for projectile seating depth were measured in base to ogive so i’m not 100 percent sure what base to tip would have been. I do have some mates that I load a similar setup for so next time they are around i’ll try remember to grab a measurement.

Why cut the barrel down? As I understand you need about 24" for 7mm magnum to be 'worth' it. At 21" you could have just got a different caliber with a 22" barrel and been delivering the same ft•lbs.

  • @WildNZ

@Steve S Good setup alright but still not the same performance as the rem mag on the same configuration. It seems you may have missed the point of the video which is allgood, everyone has their own thoughts/preferences for these things. Sure there’s others that can do it and are more then capable but that’s not the point of the video. I know they can do it, i’ve used them and still do use them. My gripe is when people claim the rem mag is “wasted” which just isnt true depending on what the application is. You need to compare apples with apples. A 24” barrelled rem mag will always beat a 24” barrelled 270, 308 etc etc and the same goes if you compared them all at 20”, 18” etc. The term “wasted” is only relative to what you are trying to achieve. Sure if it was a gong/target shooting competition long gun you would want it long but in this case it’s not. Its a short, handy, light hunting rifle with the most hitting power and least wind drift possible so that we can lug it into the southern alps and monkey scrub and bush of New Zealand on extended hunting trips but then still have a rifle that is the most capable of taking that once in a lifetime long shot on a trophy animal or sneak in on a roaring stag in the bush. The 270 stats you mentioned are mint but still don’t match up to the rem mag. Gotta compare apples with apples. You could go 18” on a 7mm rem mag (I wouldn’t though) and “waste” it, but it would still eat up an 18” 270, 308, 7mm08 etc etc...
