Sh*t Show Podcast: The Conqueror (1956) w/ Ryan Uytdewilligen
Фильм және анимация
Making John Wayne Asian is hard. Let’s talk about how difficult it was to make The Conqueror (with guest host Ryan Uytdewilligen @ryanuytdewilligen), from Howard Hughes forcing animals, actors, and sand into production, to the cast and crew inadvertently becoming nuclear fallout downwinders.

If you want some good John Wayne movies: - The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance - Fort Apache - The Cowboys - The Longest Day Also, a personal favorite of mine, The Quiet Man (though O'Hara and a lot of the supporting characters are far, far more interesting). However, I will never claim he was a good actor. John Wayne was an expert at playing John Wayne and in some movies, that's awesome; in a Western, John Wayne is a great character. Same for war movies. He did well enough in The Quiet Man. But yeah, I get why some people hate him. My mother loved him. I'm more in the camp of enjoying some of his works for what they are and ignoring most of his work.

John Wayne was the worst part of the Longest day. Just bad casting because Gavin was younger on D day than ANY of the principle cast was at time of filming Sands of Iwo Jima The Flying Leathernecks They were expendable McClintock was great The Searchers
"John Wayne should't have played Genghis Khan, but the film looks nice." is exactly my review of the film too. Was it worth it? Helz naw! Is it fun watching while drunk? Helz yeah!

Granted in 1983 a Russian guy whose job it was to watch the computers to see if missiles are coming to the USSR and one day and bunch showed up, and you know what he thought, "Stupid fucking computer" and did nothing, turns out he was right those missiles were clouds, so that mindset did stop a nuclear apocalypse
"Teahouse of the August Moon" - it started out as a play, and was adapted for screen, starring Glenn Ford, and Marlon Brando playing an Okinawan. He is fairly respectful of the character in the role, and did research on the times and culture.
Your best podcast episode so far. I realy admire how much time and effort you put into your deep research, but to hear story from someone with evem bigger scope is really great. Thank you for your great content from Prague. Ps: Consider movie The Shop on Main Street (1965). Only Slovakian movie that won Oscar so far and what a shit show was story behind it and after.

Not to enter in my "uh, actually" era but when regarding the casting of native americans (or lack thereof) they weren't mostly comprised of Mexicans (many of whom which migrated to America had partial native ancestry) but they did something even more tone deaf They'd cast people who during that time in America were considered "dark", not black, but people with so called swarthy features, meaning that: most of the "Indians" you see in those old timey movies? Italians and Eastern European Jews

If any of you guys know the band Dexy's Midnight Runners (most famous for their song Come On, Eileen) they're named after the Amphetamines popular with teens in the 50's, 60's and 70's who'd pop them to dance all night.
Nightmare of a production. The mystery of the sand is unreal
I’d have a look at Stalker they had reshoot all of it twice not to mention it also killed most of its crew by mistake.

Huge fan of the channel. I like the idea of you covering older movies. I would suggest citizen kane, easy rider, forbidden planet, or any old rko film like gunga din. Speakng of rko, anything with Cary grant are among my favs along with casablanca, the blue dalhia, the thin man, etc. I could go an about the golden age of Hollywood for days.

Maximum Overdrive has to be one too, 1.) There was a accident on film the dude survived but he did lose a eye, and to make it worse, completely pointless reason for this guy to lose his eye, 2.) Working in what looks like a North Carolina Summer, 3.) Stephen King not only being coked out of his mind, but also 10 beers in by 8:30 am and from what I heard, he has to been like Hunter S Thompson level of drugged out, and 4.) A fucking Category 4 hurricane came thru during production

Honestly reading how King was in this film and how he "used" it as a "learning" experience for later work, I kinda lost respect for him, because he also made the Shining Mini Series after Maximum Overdrive, the Shining mini series is so bad, making shit out of spite is normally pretty funny but this is man

Loved the history angle of this
I read this article in 2015 called How The West Was Wrong: The Making of John Wayne and it was a great look at the myth of him and the American Western.
Very insightful. Another stellar episode.
Wayne was impressed by Shakespeare and the fanciful dialog might have been for him a door into doing this. He cast Lawrence Harvey in The Alamo because he loved listening to English classical actors. Harvey took full advantage and recited Shakespeare to him that Wayne was transfixed by.

@@ItWasAShtShow Also worth checking out his inexplicable cameo in Bibilical Epic The Greatest Story Ever Told where he plays a Roman Soldier overcome by the presence of Jesus. His line delivery is as flat as anything in The Conqueror. He really does sound like someone speaking in a language he doesn't know, having learnt his lines phonetically.
Fun drug fact: Dexedrine is still around and used for ADHD treatment (in much smaller doses than Wayne or other actors were taking). It's a central nervous system stimulant and is basically just adderall without the amphetamine. It was a party drug (especially in Europe) in the 60s and 70s. Dexy's Midnight Runners, band who did that song "Come On Eileen", were named after a slang reference to Dexedrine.

I have been intrigued by this movie ever since the Medved brothers' 50 Worst. Had to buy it, was absolutely worth it. Also, John Wayne was not a great actor, but Stagecoach, The Searchers and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance are some of American cinema's greatest achievements.
While making heavens gate they blow up a horse with dynamite for real in a battle scene, and when they needed blood they would just bleed a few bucks from one of the horses.

Nuclear. Not nucular. Nuclear.
I think John Wayne was lucky, looking like a typical manly man and in Hollywood at a time when there was still much less competition to be a star. Maybe he got popular because he had a voice like Christopher Walken or Gilbert Godfrey.
Have you seen the movie RRR ? It's the greatest movie. Make a video about RRR.

not being that guy, I don’t get how anyone can honor john wayne knowing how racist he was & the fact that he believed in white supremacy. I get it was a different time, if bill cosby & others can be held accountable for what they did 30 years ago(which they should) then john wayne should be also. if he gets a pass then everyone that spews any kind of racism by that logic should be too. Do people really consider him a american hero? What does that say about people
@ItWasAShtShow

Its hard to separate some people like that. John Wayne was a self admitted white supremacist... but he also brought cancer out of a taboo subject. Crosby was rapey POS... but he was also a trailblazer for African-Americans in media. Or more at home, do you hate your parents if they don't support your same causes? Sometimes you need to recognize the grey areas in life, you can have complex feelings and thoughts that are both bad and good.

I’m not saying you have to. People contain multitudes. And we forget that they can change. A great example is Terry Crews. He’s been very open about how abusive and violent he was to his family, but he had a turning point and is absolutely apologetic about his past. And now champions great causes and is a good role model. We can forgive people.

@@ItWasAShtShow i’m not discrediting change because as we all grow change is inevitable. During the oscars clint eastwood & others had to hold wayne back because he wanted to literally pull that Indian woman off stage As a black man reading a white person say that whites have to be sure if black’s are allowed any power or control over themselves is hard to look past. I love you guys content, I watch your videos over & over again but it’s hard accepting john wayne because of his ignorance & views towards minorities. I never followed him after I read the things he said in that article & what he was attempting at that oscars but I will research to see if he changed. I am a husband & a father & I believe in forgiveness. All of us done things we aren’t proud of & if he took it back then I apologize for comment. @@ItWasAShtShow I didn’t see your first comment, It’s hard sometimes when someone is branded as a white supremest for me to acknowledge them. I’m in an interracial marriage so it’s difficult for me to tolerate any kind of racism or anyone who feels a person is lesser because of race. Unfortunately in the black community that’s how wayne is viewed but i’m my own person & will do the research to see for myself. I respect your views & what you were trying to illustrate. Besides reading his statements i’ve never looked into it any further because of my feelings on those types of things. I try to stay away from it but I like your show & if you can give him credibility then I can accept that, respect your opinion & not see him as a racist piece of s***
