“What people don’t realize is how much of the script Mullen improvised on set. Originally it was supposed to a completely English script, but part way through filming Nick started ending scenes by muttering fake mandarin with a few n-bombs mixed in. In the end the runtime ballooned from a tight 90 minutes to well over 6 hours in the directors cut, 4 hours of which was just Mullen muttering slurs under the guise of speaking Chinese.”

@@ginogatash4030 I don't think you can make the argument that he was a "shitty" actor. As one reviewer put it recently, Wayne had a very limited range, but within that particular range he was pretty good. He didn't play "himself" so much as a particular arch-type, and he generally stuck within the parameters of that arch-type. His best performances (and he had some good ones) were when he played variations of that character. I have no idea why he took this role but it was a tragic mistake-the probable result of him trying to do something different. At this point in his career he was one of the biggest film stars in the world. Maybe he thought he could do anything? Anyway, if that was the case, he was really, really wrong.

those arguments about 40 minutes in for why the Mongols kinda had to do what they did are pretty amazing. Those are the same kind of arguments used by plenty of empires. "We had to, we didn't really _mean_ to build an empire, our hand was forced." It's silly.

Yeah he starts pretty early with the implication than the rights of women were greater in the ancient mongol empire than in 1950’s America and then just continuously doubles down for the next like 50 mins. Really the Mongols were a perfect storm for the time, it’s why they were able to conquer such a vast empire. Temujin united the disparate Mongol clans and tribes into one unified military super power, and he got rid of the old aristocratic ways, in favor of a more meritocratic system of advancement, this allowed for way more competent commanders than you’d ever get in their contemporaries. Temujin had some of the greatest military commanders in all of history under his command, generals like Subutai were absolute geniuses when it came to war and military strategy. Also Temujin completely restructured the Mongolian military to make it way more ordered and versatile, as well as loyal by dealing out extremely harsh punishments and by equally dividing loot among soldiers.
