As a lead puppeteer on Team America you were very close on most information. Trey and Matt learned a lot ... I think they chose the most difficult puppet animation... and what they created will never be replicated. That’s genius. I’m very proud of my work and the film itself. By the way... I did Gary vomiting and all of Kim Jong Il

I’ve cried with laughter, with real tears, in the cinema at only one film. Team America is that film. The first time they played the Team America song I couldn’t breathe. Really great podcast, a deep dive on what must have been a hellish shoot with the steepest learning curve for using puppets for an entire film. Art through adversity.

My first R rated movie in theaters! legally wise. I was a Trey and Matt, stan. Still am really. The film came out October of '04 I turned 17 on the seventeenth of May in 2005. Just caught it at the end of its run at the dollar theater. Movie catchphrases were uttered all over the hallways and library my Senior year. The making the cut worse bit is from their experiences making the South Park movie. With Team America, to combat the eventual NC-17 they foresaw coming from their "old enemy", the MPAA. They put "more" in the sex scene which they never intended to be in the final release. Their theory was to film something so outrageous, the MPAA would primarily focus on THAT and leave the rest or most of the movie alone. Brilliant Offense, really.

The only (recent) piece of marionette cinematography I can think of is Thunderbolt Fantasy and that has like 3 seasons worth of the most insane quality puppeteering... Also I remember from the documentary This Film Is Not Yet Rated them admitting the puppet sex scene intentionally included the most disgusting shit they could think of so it could easily be cut down to an R rating after submitting it to MPAA

SPOILER: For me one of the funniest moments in that film was when the main character described how tragically his brother died when he was a kid: "He got tossed around by those Zoo Gorillas as if he was a puppet". One of the most dangerous scenes to think about while you are drinking.

Found the channel a while ago but only recently got time to give it full attention. Regarding your 'other puppet movie' question - I can't remember if they're marionettes or the Robot Chicken-style 'animated action figures', but there's a British WWII film in a similar style called "Jackboots on Whitehall" that came out a few years after Team America. One of those alternate histories where the NAZIs invaded Britain. It has Ewan McGreggor, Richard O Brian and Richard E Grant in the voice cast and everybody playing the NAZIs are clearly enjoying themselves hamming it up being the villains.

South park has a huge impact on peoples perception and opinions. Take Al Gore and climate change and how they ridiculed him. We haven't heard a word from him in 20 years, and there's a lot of climate change deniers. And Matt and Trey turned into CEO's of bp lying on a bear rug naked apologizing for it. This uninhibited desire to mock and ridicule everyone and everything isn't always a good idea. Sometimes you live long enough to become the villains.

My problem isn't so much with Trey and Matt, even if they are not my brand of comedy. My issue is with all the assholes who use that South Park style of lampooning as an excuse to be massive jerks, and then go "why can't you take a joke?!" when they are called out on it. Especially since they could not even approach a fraction of the talent of these guys.

I have to stand up here and represent for Gerry Anderson fans worldwide. TEAM AMERICA:WORLD POLICE is one of my favorite nutjob movies, and it's right up there with THUNDERBIRDS ARE GO and THUNDERBIRD SIX in terms of nutjob movies. CAPTAIN SCARLET AND THE MYSTERONS (1967) is my favorite Anderson Supermarionation series, and that is taking STINGRAY, THUNDERBIRDS, JOE 90, and THE SECRET SERVICE into consideration. Oh, and as far as I'm concerned, I'd like to take Jonathan Frakes out behind the garden shed and put a bullet through his peanut brain for his THUNDERBIRDS movie. ...and I know nobody asked. Fuck 'em if they can't take it.
