In regards to the story about the Canadian visiting Yugioh stores in Japan. I have recently seen news about how the behaviour of tourists in general, regardless of where they have come from has become more disruptive and has impacted how tourists are viewed. The article stated that even the Japanese who are known for having a culture of patience and respect have begun to lose their tolerance and are looking into enforcing rules for tourists to abide by when they visit. This problem is ongoing but has been acknowledged as a heightened issue at times such as the falling of the cherry blossoms festival which sees significant numbers of tourists enter the country all at once.

Take some of today with a grain of salt. I met instances of Japanese not wanting to deal with tourists over 15 years ago. Instances of disruptive tourists are likely being amplified by those who don't want to deal with tourists / outsiders in the first place.

@@arglebargle5531 My coworker went to Japan in the past year and he had no issues with people not wanting to deal with him and his wife. What he did encounter was Australian tourists who were loud and problematic at several different places he visited.

Every other nerd saved up during Covid to go visit so I’m sure it’s getting really annoying. Like a flood building up behind a dam then it burst.

I'm about the 1 hour, 30 min mark. On the topic of you guys as people and having something in common with the viewers. Sometimes your guys' vids are a little hit or miss for me, but this pod is on point. I love tuning in when I catch a new episode. You guys have good opinions, and I love hearing the discussions. I would agree that I have a few things in common with you guys. Love yugioh, use to play video games, "love tech." Pretty sure we're near the same age too. (I'm 30.) I feel like you guys are very down to earth and relatable. A lot of youtube vids, the creators come off as like "larger than life" like "personas." But on this pod, it's like I'm listening to a convo between two real dudes. And what brought me here initially was the connection to yugioh. But I love the other topics as well. I've only started "listening"/watching the pods recently, but pretty much every one I've seen, I've watched the whole way through. This is (afaik) the 3rd or 4th one that I'm about to complete. I watch while studying. So, it's nice "background noise." But I am listening. I love a real discussion with actual decent and semi-smart, well-put-together guys. I don't get a lot of chances to have a good convo. Like, this is quality stuff. And about 2 hours is just about the right length for "study watching" or like, "multitasking."

No mention of Perfect Dark?

I have both of the alt arts for the Sky strikers from the OCG and most the time when people see them they dont even realize theyre alt art, half they time they cant even tell if its pointed out. All the while actually amazing alt arts like the Shizuku one(which is even older than the other 2) did not get reprinted(or any of the selection 5 alts still after almost 2 years). And if they wanted to make an exclusive Sky Striker alt art only in QCR why not use the RotA from earlier this year which is also only QCR in the OCG. Both of these other alt arts are gorgeous. Not to mention both the alts were getting were normal parallel in the OCG, the equivalent to a standard rare card in the TCG, theyre not meant to be super premium arts Then on top of all this, as far as I've seen they haven't even announced that these cards are never going to be reprinted or leave QCR. Like, I would love to pick up that Dragon Master Magia, even if it is $600, but I'm not going to spend that much on a card that might just get reprinted down the line. Not even cause id lose money cause I never sell cards, but just because it wouldn't be a cool collectable item anymore like it currently is.

Dinomorphia is GOATED 🦖 and it's biggest strength is that a lot of people doesn't know what it does until it's too late lmao and I love when they throw Maxx C on your first turn and getting nothing from it 😎

The funniest thing about the tourist in Tokyo story is Paul subtly suggesting that Squiddy got ejected because he wasn’t recognized

I've played card games (mostly Digimon) in Japan quite a bit, but I've always assumed I needed to know enough Japanese communication ability to describe the actions I'm taking (I definitely am not fluent). I'd think the odds are you're going to go to time a lot in a tournament if you can't communicate during a tournament, which is a bit unfair to other players. What it looks like here (at least from what I'm hearing on the pod) is the stores are apprehensive here not because he's a foreigner, but more that he doesn't seem to be able to communicate at a level necessary to play a card game. That said, I have heard of (but not experienced) some shops being discriminatory and it is something that happens unfortunately. If he hit one of those stores, that's just unfortunate.

@@MatiasIglesiasIglesiasAmericans expect you to speak English in American, Japanese expect you to speak Japanese in Japan. Heck outside of yugioh in Europe there are still people that expect people to speak their language in their country. I see no surprises here.

Shoutout to the 2002 OG player getting back into the game. I’m also an OG from way back then getting back after Master Duel released and hoping to play locals once my local shop reopens (theyre currently in the process of moving into a new location). I’ve built a few decks (blue eyes for nostalgia, branded for getting into the modern game, Galaxy eyes also for nostalgia and to mess with people, and cyber dragons because theyre somehow still keeping up in 2024)

I personally really like Alt arts. I've been wanting more Alt Arts for Cyber Dragon, like, imagine a seperate art for each head of Twin and End Dragons, so cool.

Fable has been in development many time since the last Fable 3 on xbox 360 in 2010. The game has been picked up, trailer shown and never finished a couple of times. So finally getting a new Fable is huge for those who are fans.

If you want to get back into reading, one big author I've been getting into is Brandon Sanderson, brilliant fantasy author, his big Cosmere universe will knock your socks off, but I love that you don't need to read any one series first and be lost. Each book series can be a good standalone, but little connections here and there show ideas for something bigger in the distance. If you want a good place to start i'd recommend Mistborn, the magic system is one of the greatest and the story kept my on edge all through the pages.

The thought of Final Fantasy XVI being so overlooked that fans of Final Fantasy are publicly asking for an entry with real time combat and cinematics🤣

Alec, the main appeal of the Sky Striker alt arts is their manga design. Their faces are way closer to the Manga art than the original card art. To me it's a bummer they're QCR only. I don't really care about rarities but I really want to own them so that sucks to me.

I noticed that too, which is insane. But that is still the pre-order price, so I might wait for a week or two to see if they change.

30:46 my wife and I went to Japan and my wife speaks Japanese and English. More than once she had to intervene with obnoxious people talking very loud and slow English at Japanese people who clearly did not speak much if any English. If you want to play a complex game like yugioh in Japan learn Japanese first. The dominant language in Japan is not English it is Japanese, you aren’t in North America.

Your talk about book stores got me in the feels to think of the humble video shop renting games and movies to learn what you like watching/playing and to see if it is worth buying also one of the new games from the show cases was the realy kool looking power rangers game based on mmpr mixing in the once and always story the sad thing is its only 5 players not 6

Would love to see sets centered around specific time wizard formats. With a focus on the harder to get staples of each format.

I don't understand why anyone would go to another country as a visitor and be disrespectful to the people and the culture. Visiting another country is a privilege not a right

for the people who is saying "oooh Dragon Master Magia is not a meta card is not good" this just continues this precedent of printing lottery cards, and maybe today it doesn't affect many, but what if in the future it hits your favorite archetype? encouraging this behavior just because right now it "doesn't affect me" might bite you in the back later in the line

Japan has been left with a bad taste in their mouth over that streamer that Alec was mentioning. That particular streamer would walk around slapping people, verbally harassing them and being a genuine menace in the streets that at a certain point, He was banned from entering Japan again. Mix worn patience with a language barrier and a wordy rule dependent card game and the result is that Card shops have decided that it's better to deny the opportunity for these incidents to happen than try to accommodate them.

47:32 the tonal difference between the Dragon Age character trailer and the Dragon Age gameplay trailer is interesting. The gameplay trailer is a lot less cartoony so I’m not really sure what they were doing with the character trailer, I think as Alec said, they wanted the characters to stand out. But I think most of the controversy is “game different” and the typical culture war stuff. Game looks good to me. Expedition 33 looks brilliant.

People will always complain about something or other… rarity collecting 2 for example. There’s too many rarities. Instead of hey there are different levels of value (budget) for everyone.

Honestly, I didn't know Call of Duty skins transferred forward between games, that alone seems pretty cool for a series. Don't really know of any other game series that do that, but i don't play shooters really, maybe it's common there? Japan has been having some major issues with tourists as of late. Tourists keep bugging the geishas and so Japan has actually banned tourists from certain streets because of it. There are more than a few restaurants who simply don't want to deal with foreigners. I wouldn't be surprised if hobby shops star banning foreigners. It's a mix of Japans normal xenophobia and tourists acting up majorly lately.

THANK YOU FOR SAYING IT ALEC. Ancient Gear Golem, Badass card since GX Episode 1. it was Dr. Crowler's only redeeming quality for most of the show. Ancient Gear itself is a glorified mess of bricky and slow mechanics that weren't even good for its time without Howitzer or Ultimate Golem or Reactor Dragon to cheese out immediately for the tradeoff to be backrow resistance reliant on 3k beaters who has nothing but friends who are very weak or require a tribute, otherwise deck objective is just to slowly build a castle that could be eaten by a Chimeratech Fortress Dragon instantly and the deck is just so set in its style that its beyond me even caring. I can't stand sitting around with beeeeg earthen machinery 2 tribute pimps that I have to comvince my opponent to let me live long enough to play only its instantly banished now- fffuuuuuuu

High value, QCR exclusive cards in a set are a great thing. Sucks for the casual player just looking to pick up a copy but gives people a reason to actually buy sealed product and stores to keep the product on the shelves. This is not a bad thing. This is not a 'failed' experiment. It's just adding a high value chase for collectors. Knowing Konami they'll just reprint this in lower rarity later in a tin or something so if the Game Piece Army is patient they should be able to get their hands on a copy eventually

Also, totally disagree with the point this point that was made 'Konami brought back a lottery card to the detriment of people who actually care - collectors, players, ect'. The idea that you have to play the TCG or be a casual collector who wants singles prices to be as cheap as possible to care about the IP is a really bad way of looking at it. There are a lot of people that buy sealed product and open packs (who Konami cares more about because they actually support the product release versus the secondary market) that are stoked to have the chance to pull a collectors item that has high resale value. This is not Konami giving people who care the bird.....it's adding something for the whales that are actually going to be buying the product

@@apsamplifier could be wrong but my guess is Magia will get a reprint later in a tin or something at lower rarity. If they didn't reprint it I'd be shocked. Not sure about the Sky Strikers though. But yeah that's a fair criticism. I don't play the TCG anymore but it sounds like this isn't a meta staple or anything like that so that's better than making something like SP a QCR only release imo

The foreigner in the card shop has mistakenly applied American rights, culture and stuff abroad. It's okay for them to not waste large chunks of game time trying to bridge a communication gap for a tournament. If you want to play there The onus is on you to learn their language, not on them to all conform to your needs. That's pretty self entitled and crying about what would be illegal in America while not in America seems silly af. This is why alot get laughed at when they use their freedoms granted here to act like their home is awful

Japanese establishments have a long standing history of not offering service to Tourists. This isn't anything new, especially for places like bars or resturants where certain edicate is expected in a "modest" country. These establishments target speciffically only "Non-Japanese," and even some lighter skinned Japan Nationals / Japanese get stopped or rejected. People need to do more research and underestand that you will just not be allowed in some places in Japan for not being Japanese.

I’ve said this a million times by now but Yugioh alternate arts are TERRIBLE especially compared to other card games

It is a known issue with Japanese shops (especially restaurants) that many want to give native Japanese people a place where they can just be Japanese and not feel like they have to play host to foreigners. Often they’ll have signs that say things like “Japanese only” or “ Please no foreigners”. It’s not great, especially with western (and more specifically US) people having a veeery negative history with discrimination like this. But from what I have heard about these establishments, they are coming less from a point of view of “foreigners are bad” and more one of “we just want to not be expected to speak outside of our primary/only language and comprise our cultural norms while here”. It’s still discriminatory, and I would say it’s bad, but it does feel like it comes from a less malicious place.

Not a good excuse. Its prejudice, and one degree removed from racism. If they dont want to deal with others, then shut down your tourism. Its bullshit that we, out here, have to accept everone under the sun and their messed up crap, but we have to respect and understand when others discriminate against us?!? Screw that, and ill withdraw all investment from any of their tcg and anime exports then.

On the topic of playing against a foreign player, I do play Vanguard (Yugioh’s Don’t talk about Game), I played a game against that person, and They loved seeing a bunch of foreigners (to him) enjoying a card game we play. We also got enlightened that Vanguard is in decline in Japan and more money is flowing from other countries, which is shocking to me, cause I haven’t been in Japan….yet. All I know is….We can come together because of Card games.
